Loch of the Lowes - 2010

Thought I'd start a separate thread for the posting of news, updates, pictures etc. from the nest at the Loch of the Lowes. Now that the first chick has hatched at Loch Garten the Daily Update page is going to get too unwieldy if it is used for news from LotL as well as LG, and the "News From Other Nests" is getting pretty full as well.

OG, I'm not surprised they've decided that, given the events of the last few days and the still-uncertain situation. I guess that means they probably won't ring them either, as one of the issues would be the risks of sending someone up to the nest. It would have to be done in the next 2 weeks or so, as the chicks are a similar age to LG's.

Thanks, SueC.   At that stage they had not put the reason why they weren't tracking these, and I assumed it was because they may not be very fit.  But now I know it is because of not disturbing the old lady by approaching the nest, so yes, they won't be ringed either.  Have they ever ringed before at LotL?

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Well, Hold me back and call me Joe!!!!   I've just got in from work, and am amazed at th sight in front of me. Not  only is Madge  feeding the chicks but I think I saw her feeding herself.  Mibby she still struggling slightly with the grip with her beak but my goodness what a difference. Off to read through and see whats been going on throughout today.

  • Lady gone for a flyabout, chicks looking out for her return.

  • Morning all: Still good news. Wonderful. Thanks for posts and pix.  I've been reading the newspaper stories and Lady really has contributed mightily to the osprey population.  There has to be a heaven for birds and other critters, right?  :-)

  • Amazing close ups of Madge just now.  Great to see.  Her eyes still not quite as bright.  - Really unfortunate  but definitely the right call from SWT that they won't  ring them again this year,

  • Think its the right decision not to ring them, if there is even the slightest chance of upsetting Lady in her fragile state.  It will be wonderful to see the chicks fledge, then she has done her job well again this year, and a fitting last tribute to an amazing bird.  Just a pity that we won't know them when they return in a few years from now.

  • I am happy they are not going to  tag or ring the chicks. Lady would be  frightened as someone approached the nest and try to protect her  chicks. She doesn't need to waste  her limited  energy  .

Research is  great,  but the  Osprey come first .

There are so many they can't ring all of them  anymore.

Roy Dennis will just  choose another nest to  ring the chicks

  • Lady's recovery over the last 36 hours has been one of the most remarkable and uplifting events I've ever witnessed, utterly amazing. She seems to be coming on in leaps and bounds now, and although not 100%, she has certainly found her voice again!

A lot of chicks have been ringed and  they were not seen again .  Statistics show  many of them survived yet were never seen in the area where they hatched.

  • It is absolutely wonderful seeing her feeding the chick 9:13pm.  :-)

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)
