Daily Update (LG Nest) Saturday 22nd May

Well another day begins with the night-time. EJ is fidgiting again and rolling the eggs although the chicks sound quiet now and Lady at LOTL is having a moment - fidgiting a bit but now settled down.

All you early watchers I hope you find that EJ's 1st chick will have hatched. Capture it if you can and we will find out in the morning.

Goodnight all.

  • The new mother is unconcerned and is having a preen:

  • Think the actual hatching time is undetermined, su  as EJ kept getting in the way of the camera & also its difficult to see at night.

Anyone know what time it hatched?

We have no idea  Su. LG may know when they write their blog.

  • We donated to upgrade to electric service and it got rid of the loud humming. Could we collect money to "relocate" the  Radio Chaffinch so we could hear the chicks better ?LOL

  • Barbara Jean  Second chicks very often come quite quckly after first chicks. For some reason the second egg does not take as long to incubate as the first one. However since the fiest egg has just taken over 36 days it seems unlikely that a second chick would be due as it would only be in it 34th day of incubation. Not impossible but I think unlikely.

There was a case at Bassenthwaite a few years ago where there no chicks at dusk and two at dawn. Similarly a week or so ago at Millford Connecticut there were two hatchings overnight. In the Millford case it probably was a second and third egg hatching together as the first egg probably did not hatch.

  • EJ is panting again  so it must be hot again today. That is great for the new little one and the eggs when EJ needs to take a flight

  • Barbara Jean, I started watching at 4am this morning and the bloomin cuckoo was already calling. I must admit I was really getting fed up listening to it. I usually love to hear them.

Guess so. I'll just have to open yet another window as well as the nest, forum, goshawk,Bassenthwaite and badgers to read the blog when LG have had their breckkies!! My poor aged PC is begining to wheeze I'm sure.

THANKS! you are a wealth of information.

EJ seems a bit more settled now . Perhaps she was restless just getting the eggs and the new chick settled under her .  She still needs to turn the remaining eggs as well as keep the new little one warm
