Weekly Chat, Sunday May 9, 2010

Morning/evening all:  Lovely day here.  Sunny, warm, cactii are beginning to bloom.  Will be keeping one eye on the volcano and the other on EJ while doing other things tonight (hmmm...). Should be interesting.  Lots of chat about the volcano on the last page of the previous week.  Off to start dinner; back later!

  • Speculation is raging.....

16.35 Gordon Brown's spokeswoman has denied that he has resigned, while Tory MPs have been put on standby for a mystery-meeting as late as 8pm.

.......and nobody is owning up to the bags in question?

  • George:First off, congrats on the new telly - a new flat screen is almost at the top of our list.  Bummer about your bro-in-law's messed up appoinment. As you say, not helping him at all.

jsb: I knew Brown was going to resign (we heard last night new leader by September) and that he was in talks with Clegg since Conservatives had made last offer to Cleg. Not sure which pact has now fallen through.  Hmmm

In the meantime, passing the time here listening to BP/Halliburton/TransOcean execs explaining themselves at the Senate Energy Committee special hearing on Capitol Hill.

  • Annette, Brown announced he was resigning as Labour party leader last night and a new leader would be chosen before the Party Conference in September. He has not resigned as Prime Minister yet.

  • Annette: We seem to now be 180 degrees from where we were last night. We don't know about GB, as leader of the Labour party, his resignation as PM assuming that will be shortly, now seems to make it impossible for him to remain as leader of the Labour Party. The news yesterday was that he would stay on for a bit, when the Lab/Lib pact was still a possibility.

We are still awaiting official confirmation of what is being reported over the air.

  • "Con-Dem" agreement is being referred to! They will have to change that abbreviation, for sure!

The journalists/TV newsreaders keep checking with each other on the facts......this is going out totally unscripted.

  • They are now debating, whether or not it will be OK to visit the Queen in the evening (as opposed to the customary, in the morning, following an election).

The Palace are 'plugged in' to what is going on.....needs to be a dignified occasion, timing is reliant on the activities of the politicians.

A sense of history in the making, is very evident and lots of protesters adding lots of colour to the proceedings.

Now they have started booing, outside the Cabinet Office  : Shouting "Shame on you"....presumably disgruntled Lib-Dem supporters.

  • Our local news has just interviewed Lord Denis Healey, who is now 93. If you agree with his politics or not, you would have to admire how articulate he was during the interview. Now very thin, but still has the thick bushy eyebrows. His middle name is Winston ( after Churchill) which he tried to keep  quiet when he joined the Labour party.

  • Evening everyone.  It seems quiet on here tonight.  Annette -  the oil spill is truly a catastrophe on several fronts.  Your OH is giving a lecture in Cambridge - might one ask his field of expertise?  Too bad that you are not accompanying him but you have had several major domestic projects on the go and you will have time to recharge your batteries, take stock, reflect (and spoil yourself a bit I hope) when he is away.

I am so glad the political situation has now moved on from the uncertainty of a hung parliament and hats of to David Cameron for his opening speech as PM.  Very eloquent and I liked his delivery - you could visualise him rolling up his shirt sleeves ready to get down to business.  I welcome that.  He has a huge task ahead of him, as all PMs do.  BrendaH - I would love to have seen the Denis Healy interview.  93 years of age - wow - where have the years gone.  He was mimicked by so many for his 'silly billy' quotes but a true character.

George G -  Delighted to hear that you have treated yourself to a new TV.  The birds will cope easier during the summer with cutbacks and you will have loads of enjoyment from your new purchase.  Alan P - I must try hooking the laptop up to the big screen - never tried that.  Steed is off hillwalking on Saturday (weather permitting) so I might just try it out - although EJ in surround sound is a bit daunting.  Glad to hear of Phoebe's chicks.

Daughers are 15 and 18 and exam time is always a tad stressful but all will be over in a few weeks.  Any of the teachers out there (retired or still working) know how difficult the month of May is.

  • Packing was interrupted by various issues, then getting out to water the garden was interrupted by political developments!  So still need to get stuff done to finish.  Alan – thanks for noting second chick for Phoebe – I hope it works out for her this time.  Enjoy your time in Wales, and the Ospreys there.   Annette – replied re Canada cake in answer to someone else – probably Lindybird, haven’t got time to go back and look!  Oh, how I agree – send OH away and live on raw or pre-prepared foods for a while!  No new rig for Steve yet – California via snow in Nebraska then hoping back to Utah to check again!  Apparently new trucks ready but can’t be released to drivers!  George G – our neighbours over the road got to Crete Monday from Manchester Airport – wonder if they’ll get back when planned.  Hope your Son gets there soon.  Really sorry about delay for your BiL – what a let down for him.  Enjoy your new TV and HDD – hope you learn to use them quicker than we did!  I’m seeing other avatars, but not yours.  Well, that’s it from me for a while … Hello and Au Revoir to everyone I haven’t mentioned – due back home late next Wednesday 19th – in time for hatchings.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
