Keith and Ann closed last month with some lovely chat and osprey news. It is this kind of coverage that we must have if The Gabfest is to be able to continue.
The Gabfest does have a purpose - a reason for being. That purpose is to educate about wildlife in general and ospreys in particular. We do that by following the osprey we care about with pictures and narrative, and by entertaining ourselves with other topics of interest to us. If we are interested others probably will be also. They will thus be drawn to our site where they will get to know the osprey we love.
Pictures are not necessary to make an interesting post. I was hooked before I ever saw a cam simply by reading the entries on The Main Blog. They did not use pictures then. Through the years many Gabbers have added to our thread with simple observations and comments.. The posts of one Gabber in particular are greatly missed. SUGAR'S early morning observations of the Loch Garten nest were a joy to read.
It is to be hoped that we can have many reports, comments and observations this summer, both with and without pictures, as we enjoy the antics of our favorite osprey.
Over on Cliff Cam 2 situated just below Sumburgh Lighthouse they continually scan the cliff and watch the various nesting sea birds - Nothing yet on Puffin Cam 1 but you can see the Puffins on Cliff Cam 2
CLIFF CAM 2
You can switch to other cams once you have this page. A few scans from a ten minute watch this morning.
Keith,
I have been watching the Sumburgh cams for a while now. I've never seen any wildlife on them, but Cliff cam 3 is where I watched the Northern Lights/Heavenly Dancers this winter. I posted several nice pictures and some excited comments on Facebook.
You made some nice captures of the puffins in ten minutes time. I will have to watch more carefully for them in the future.
Were you able to visit The Cone Nest as planned on your trip to Aberdeen? Did I miss any comments or pictures you might have made on what is happening there?
Lake District Osprey Project is new to me - at least one that I have not yet been able to sort out in my head. A wee bit of research tells me that it is another RSPB nest. I have listed it now in my notes. Next will be to look it up on the map and try some streetwalking. Apparently it doesn't have a cam.
Also will try for some streetwalking around the Loire Valley.
So far on this LP I only have LG cam in favorites. Will get LOTL, Manton Bay and DYFI as time allows.
The lake District Osprey Project is a joint venture between the Forestry Commission, Lake District National Park and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
The Lake District itself is a National Park of stunning beauty which contains England highest mountains and deepest and longest waters. Long before the ospreys came back to re-colonise I climbed one of its highest peaks close by SKIDDAW.
LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK
The LDOP is situated on Bassenthwaite Lake beside Dodd Wood.
As far as I know and apart from Kielder Forrest it contains the only natural re-colonistaion of ospreys in England. Rutland water was a translocation programme. What a place for an osprey to live in the summer.
The bird we follow on migration to and from Bioko island (WHITE 14) came from this nest.
Hope EJ keeps them eggs warm.
Heavy snow expected in the region at first light Friday and turning lighter during the day. Overnight temperatures minus 1 celcius with winds directly from the north thus the cold and snow.
I suppose ospreys are used to it.
All my fault Keith has having my winter tyres off on Saturday :-)))
WendyB - That's early :):)
I believe people in Tomintoul wait until June then change back to winter tyres in August.
Oh Keith I am a bit lower than them..
But my Glenlivet doctor calls that the " village of the damned" all todo with Queen Victoria's visit so maybe they hate change..
Good evening all. Poor EJ having to cope with snow :( Hope it doesn't get too bad. I think she's used to it by now.
Brilliant news that White 14 is on his way home, Was wondering when he'd leave his island paradise :) Hope he has a safe journey home.
No snow yet that I can see, either on the nest or coming down.. Still several hours till daylight when "heavy" snow is expected.
