So the month of the ospreys has arrived. It is hard to believe that it is here already.
The very sad news of the last month is the demise of Blue XD. No more will he be coming over to Loch Garten in the hope of getting it together with EJ or demonstrate his fishing skills at Aviemore. He has been part of our lives since he touched down at Loch Garten on Wednesday 28 March 2012.
We know that Beatrice started off on her migration on 23 February which as far as we know is her earliest start ever. Will this mean that the birds will be early?
Of course the main birds awaited at Loch Garten are EJ and Odin. EJ will be 19 years old this year and so is very mature bird. It will be her 14th season at Loch Garten. As always she will be keenly awaited.
Let us hope that things are a little bit less traumatic at Loch Garten this year.
We can expect to see Mrs Glaslyn early as usual but the big question is when Aran will turn up? We just do not know.
The very first osprey expected to arrive will be 3 (97) at Rutland. He has been arriving about 17 March in recent years.
Laddie at Loch of the Lowes is something of an early bird too, arriving on 21 March in the last two years.
So it is all beginning. Are you excited?

Yes I did read that amazing.... CHOL:):)
SK2 You might find more info here and here
I have a note "After four years of preparing the Osprey reintroduction project in Switzerland (one century after it became extinct), we are happy to launch www.ospreys.ch. The main objective of this website is to document the various stages of this project, while at the same time reporting on other conservation activities or research on this species taking place elsewhere"
"Our first release of Osprey chicks in Switzerland is planned for the summer of 2015. 2015 we put blue rings with the white letters PP followed by a number (PP1, PP2, up to PP6) on the right leg."
And a note saying that Blue PP1(15) is female, and that Blue PP4(15) is male who was shot in Morocco, he responded to treatment and escaped rather than being released! I expect the details are in the link.
I think this might have been by RD - "On 14 July 2015, six young Ospreys from Scotland arrived at Geneva airport, accompanied by Osprey expert Roy Dennis. After having their first Swiss meal (fresh fish kindly offered by two Lake Geneva fishermen), they were brought by car to their new home and reintroduction site in the Canton of Fribourg. They were welcomed by an exceptional heat wave, but despite this they have adapted very well to their new environment."
I am sorry this is all rather higgle-dee-piggle-dee!! but I am trying to do other things and am not really concentrating. I suggest you try the two links. You will probably find all the info there. The project is being run by Dr Wendy Strahm.

Thank you Sheila for the links , I did read those from the link in Tigers info, but not the bit about the rings, so that is very interesting.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
A real threat to the osprey season. A lack of custard creams. What will the volunteers at Loch Garten do?
Well, they might go shopping. There's an excellent Lidl in Forres.

Yes but there are no custard creams in the shops. You must not have read the article! :)
