Osprey Chat Thread for January 2016

Thread carrying on from here

So the new year has arrived and now the countdown to the osprey season has seriously started. What will it bring?

That is as always a hard question to answer but it will no doubt brings lots of ups and downs.

So what are your wishes for the 2016 osprey season?

  • Theres a new blog from LG with some lovely photos :)

  • Thank you Willow. At least it explains the absence of a Xmas blog.

  • Here we are.  The first blog since November, with an explanation.

  • I wish for the safe return of the well known breeding birds.  That Rothiemurchus is seen and that the settles down to rear a family.    To see the return of DYFI youngsters and would love to see Druie return to LG.

One idea could be to continue the existing thread “Rutland Osprey Project 2016” for all updates, links to blogs, diary updates for all the other birds/sites excluding Manton Bay and have another thread “Rutland - Manton Bay Nest 2016” specifically for posts and captures of the MB nest.

And a Very Happy New Year to you too Karen.  I think your suggestion has much merit.  We do get the occasional snippets of other information on the other various sites and they easily disappear among the MB updates.  I am sure they gave information on one or two new nest sites, but somewhere the site name has changed, and I can't find either!  So a yes from me!!

Thank you, Tiger, for starting the 2016 Rutland Osprey Project thread.  You will have seen that Karen put forward a sensible suggestion (well, in my view anyway!) and others have also agreed, I wonder whether you might put an explanation on your  new thread, and then perhaps Karen or yourself would start a new one, Rutland OP - Manton Bay Nest 2016, which can cover all other news on birds, nests, sightings, etc.

  • First I Thank Tiger for starting the 2016 blogs and for all the information he provides on all of his sites along with the help of compatriots.

I do think where there is a followed nest and there is going to be a running commentary such as at Rutland/Loch Garten/LOTL and a few others they should be separated from the main Rutland 2016/LOTL 2016 threads etc.

I think this falls in to the views put forward by Karen ShielaFE and SunnyKate2.

I know I was looking for a posting on Rutland thread last year and had to search through daily ball by ball commentary to find it. I feel it may be better to keep these commentaries to their own designated threads and could be named as such Manton Dalily Update and so so.

  • Catching up and just want to say thanks for your thoughts about the Rutland thread.  Much appreciated and I am so pleased to find others in agreement.  Obviously I’m all for separating for the reasons SheilaFE, SunnyKate2 and Keith point out - information hard to find or was being missed and this seems a sensible solution providing a thread for posters to continue posting their updates/captures of the daily MB nest activity and another for all other project info/debates thus everyone is happy :-)

  • Assuming that we do start a Manton Bay thread, the question is  "Do we start it now?" or  "when the birds come back?"

  • I would suggest as soon as there is sign of activity on the nest.  There seems little point to start it much sooner, other than perhaps some resume of 2015?  But I leave it to you and Karen, as it was her suggestion.

    Agree!!!

that is what  usually happens with LOTL.. Maybe using Chloe B /Tiger excellent countdown clocks. Possibly about 30 days to estimate arrivals could be a good time.

But am easy going , so will go with what ever ....Just love it when we all get eager to get the new season  on its way, wondering what delights and sadness we will witness through out........ Or

Maybe Rutland will have news that could start us off.
