The LG OSPREY GABFEST for JANUARY and FEBRUARY 2016

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2016 BRINGING US A FULL NEST AT LOCH GARTEN WITH EJ AND ODIN AT THE HELM.

  • This is a witches ducking stool in Canterbury in need of repair. There are guided boat trips along this river, ignore the road cone! Not good pics but give an idea. Witches (or suspects ) were ducked in the water and if drowned were proved to be witches! Even if innocent they still drowned. Thank goodness weve moved on from those dark days :)

  • Quote: not good pics.  Willow, I beg to disagree!!!  These are FANTASTIC pictures, every one of them! The muddy water between old English type houses - Is this a flood or is it always like this?  Looks like Venus.

And the misty field, maybe looks plain and uninteresting to some, but it is so atmospheric!  You have captured the feeling so well.  I love it and think it is probably my favorite.

  • Apparently there are FOUR cams at Sumburgh.  Oh, do I have a lot of watching and sorting out to do. And seems it is worth visiting the cams just to hear he background music they provide.

It is now 6:15 here and still daylight, dusk actually..  That is vast improvement over only a week or so ago when it was pitch dark well before 6pm.

  • Willow, reading your post again, you did say this is a river.  But the houses and doors are right ON the river.  In my world, houses are never that close to a road or street, never mind a river! Unbelievble!  Not that I'm doubting or questioning your word you understand. Just - - amazing!

  • Good evening all. Glad you like the pics. June that is a river that permanently flows past those houses! Abit like Venice but not so beautiful! You can hire a rowing boat along that river but we have never done that! I think its possible to go by boat all the way to Sandwich, and lots of bird life along the river and seals at Sandwich. Its a trip id like someday. I imagine the houses must suffer from damp!

Our evenings are now much lighter now.

  • At Sumburgh, I found a small lighthouse on the way up, but I never did get to the lighthouse at the top.  Just as I got there, streetwalk started doing flip-flops and I had to back off.  Will try again.

  • COUNTDOWN FOR  LOCH GARTEN NEST

51 days till  EJ'S RETURN  on  March 28th

57 days till ODIN'S RETURN  on Wed April 3rd

We all know that any countdown is just a guess, no matter how careful the calculation or formula.  This year I used the "Pick a Number Out of a Hat" method.  If I didn't like the number, I just put it back and picked another.  :)

The actual dates of return for Odin and EJ as recorded by ChloeB and Tiger's osprey data are HERE.  http://www.imagicat.com/profiles.html

I also did flip flops on my last walk up to the lighthouse in early summer last year. My co worker who works on the Island at Sulom Voe took me in the car to view the puffins nesting. He stopped the car and we walked about 3 miles for an hour on the same road you have street walked. I thought this was the nearest you could get the car to the lighthouse then we had to go by foot. When we got there I said the road goes all the way and there is a car park. He just said I thought you fancied the walk.

I think this is as close you will get on Google street walking.

You can book the lighthouse keepers cottage for week holidays. I know someone who would like that just looking at views of the ocean. See the link.

  • Keith Strange The point in your first picture is exactly where streetwalk does flipflops.  I have some pictures.  Yes the camera did get further along and I eventually streetwalked closer.   The fact that you actually walk (walk, ride, drive, whatever)  where I can only streetwalk adds to the fun, but I do love Lerwick and Shetland Isles.  I have actually streetwalked this area before and repeated visits just add to the allure and mystic.
