THE LG OSPREY GABFEST FOR OCTOBER, NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER, 2015

We had zero chicks at Loch Garten nest this summer, so there are none to follow this winter. EJ and Odin have migrated south and with neither tagged we cannot follow them. Sadly, we have lost Breagha, the last tagged LG offspring. Once again a healthy Loch Garten chick is “lost contact, presumed dead”. Even the camera is away for the winter. Thus we have lost all contact with the Loch Garten nest. For the first time since I found EJ and the Loch Garten nest, there is NOTHING LEFT. Nothing left, that is, except HOPE for a better season in 1916.

On this note of hope I will maintain The Gabfest in a semi-retired state. Thus we will be open for any osprey news which comes through, whether it be from UK or USA or Africa. Also any bird or wildlife photos or news are always appreciated here.

Over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve some may wish to share photos of their cakes, Christmas Trees and/or some music videos. Winter gardening, trains, anything goes here on the Gabfest that anyone wants to talk about.

So if anyone cares to come in for a wee chat, the Gabfest may be sleeping, but it is open.

Is your new job in Saxony or Thuringia?

Hello everyone, hello Ann, thank you very much for the warm welcome back. In the future I'll get to know both Saxony and Thuringia better. My boyfriend's house is still in Saxony and my job is in the next town, which is in Thuringia. Both places are just 10 kilometres apart. Some people are of the opinion that I might go to work by bike. But this is a bad idea. The road goes through the woods, and it is very narrow. And highly frequented by lorries / trucks. So I'll rather go by car. I'm so excited to see more of the area. In a week we are going on holiday for a few days, to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. I've been dreaming for a long time to go there. It is a beautiful area. I hope to take a few pictures that I can share with you.

  • Bente W - The re-unification of Germay means alot to all of Europe and we are all pleased it happened. The people of Germany made it happen. Many things would not have happened had the re-union not happened including your story.

I got a contract in Poland just a couple of Kms acrosss the border but from the start of the contract always and still stay in a lovely hotel in what was formerly DDR. It was a place called Zittau in South east Saxony near to Dresden and still visit now still having the contract. I still love it because I can be in Germany - Poland and Czech Republic all within five miniutes.

I wish you best with your future.

  • 58 Willow - My neighbour is the local policeman so he may arrest me if he sees me in a mask holding two dead crows.

At the time of T in the Park I asked him if i could borrow his official work car to drive to Strathallan - NO was the answer it would not go down well in the press Police arrest Neighbour over an Osprey and our house prices may drop :).

I do think the article was very true though and maybe why the gamekeepers hang them on the fence to deter them as they fear death. They are as you say very intelligent.

  • 58 Willow - I hope 14 makes it to Bioko. It is an Island I love to go to work and know he is well settled in the particular area he goes - no disturbance except when I go.

I also am looking forward to the two Kielder birds returning next year - Joanna has done a great job with this project.

  • Bente I think you are wise not to cycle to work when there are lorries and narrow roads! Is this bicycle or motorbike? I used to commute 70 miles each way every day by motorbike. I still have the bike but going to sell as I no longer ride it. I have had too many near misses LOL! I used to love riding it and went to moter cycle rallies etc but maybe just lost the joy of it! Youd be safer by car!

  • For reasons Im not sure White14  holds a special place for me I find him fascinating and what a traveller he is. I hope you get to see him on your next visit to Bioko Island :)

We did have a bit of a scare when 7H transmitter stopped working, then began transmitting signals again. I remember the relief!

Joanna has done a great job with the project and has kept us fully up to date all the time,

    Is this bicycle or motorbike?

Hello Willow, it is bicycle. I never thought about making a driver's licence for a motorbike. Motorbikes are strange things. They only have two wheels, and they are fast, and if the road is narrow and with many bends, I'm always afraid that a motorbike in front of me could fall over. So I would never sit on one myself, but I admire people who do it, and certainly cruising along on a motorbike can be fun. One of my cousins has a motorbike, and she loves it. I don't understand how she can manage it. She is a lightly built girl, and her motorbike is big and heavy. And you did rallies? This is impressive. But I, as a little coward, prefer my car.

  • News from LAKE DISTRICT - V0 seems to have settled in an esturine area on the Senegal Mauritania border. He has been here for 10 days now.

This comes from their FB Page and am aware some do not have FB

  • Good evening all. Thankyou Keith for posting update on LDs VO. Its good to know he is settled at least for now. It looks to be very dry anddessert like where he is and hope the fishings good. I wonder if hell move further South. The competition might be much greater though.

Hello Bente. I passed my bike test along time before my car test. I took absolutely AGES to pass car test and failed many many times! I lost count but it was getting very expensive LOL!

  • Oh no Bente not brave at all! When i say Rallies I meant biker gatherings where there is live music and camping among other things like tatoo competitions, beer and lots of stalls to buy stuff. I do not drink beer (only a very small amount!) and do not have tatoos either but went mainly for the camping and live music! Rallies should mean what you thought I dont know why they call these gatherings rallies!
