Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 30 August 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY FULL MOON!

Last week's chat thread is HERE.

I'm going to carry over Annette's links for the California Condor webcams (because I'm enjoying watching the funny looking fellas): Ventana Wildlife Society nest and feeding cams and Sespe Condor Sanctuary nest cam .

Also, Explore.org has a lot of interesting cams right now: underwater whales; sharks; the Grand Cayman reef; various underwater cams at Long Beach, California; grizzly, panda, and polar bears; puffins; a hummingbird nest; penguins; auroras; and various Africa cams. I like to watch some of them while meditating. Explore's Hawaii cams might be interesting over the next 2-3 days as Category 4 Hurricane Ignacio approaches from the east and tracks just north of the Hawaiian Islands, causing very high surf.

Everyone have a great week!

  • LizLFW: Thanks for the reminder about Rita. I'm less able to deal with warm temps all the time. Have been making wild suggestions to OH about buying a shack up the coast north of San Francisco (he think I'm kidding).  :-))   Hope you're doing okay.

  • Hi, all. 94 F (34.4 C) today and higher temps by Sunday. Spent the day in front of my cyclone fan!

Went north to get groceries and supplies on Tuesday. I hadn't been to town in a month, and I couldn't believe the increase in food prices. I think we're now seeing the result of the California drought. $1 for one small, withering green bell pepper. Nuts of all kinds are incredibly expensive!!!

Saw the discussion about vegetarianism. I was a strict vegetarian for ten years -- no beef, pork, chicken, or fish (nothing with a face) -- but over the last couple of years I'd drifted away from it and was eating meat. I recently realized that I was much healthier as a disciplined vegetarian. I was also more at peace with the ethics of my diet. On my recent birthday, I re-dedicated myself to that lifestyle. I've spent a lot of time in the grocery store choosing healthful foods and re-establishing my old ways. I can already tell the difference in endurance when I mow.

Annette: I hate the heat, too. I absolutely love that area north of San Francisco. If you can swing it financially, you might want to give it serious consideration. I assume the drought is less severe there? Do take it easy this weekend after working so hard on the pre-painting tasks this week. Have a good breakfast with your daughter

By the way, the first season of Manhattan is now available on DVD from Netflix. It's a fictionalized drama about the scientists (and their families) who worked on the Manhattan Project in 1943. I think you would really like it. Season 2 starts on October 13 on WGN, so you have some time to catch up on Season 1.

Rita: I, too, hope you're recovering well.

Liz: I always thought I'd like to see S. Africa. I also like the rain, and I always wash my hair in the rain. :-)

Heather: I hope your family are now enjoying themselves in Florida. I looked at the webcams there briefly today, and I saw sunshine and lots of heat. Back when I was going down there often, we stayed in hotels on the Venice coast, a small city north of Naples. Not as posh, but lovely. I know you listen to the BBC World Service at night. I hope they reach the end of that series about the World War. Some of that story has been really gruesome to listen to in bed late at night -- gives me nightmares!

Wendyb: I envy you. I would like to see Dismaland.

Brenda: Had to laugh at the story about the dogs coming to visit. :-)

Linda: Loved the stories from your recent holiday. The story of the stinky doggy was hilarious. Enjoy your time with your family.

George: Good luck with the scans. Will be hoping for good results.

Alan: I'm hoping for the badgers!

AQ: I hope MissJ's reflux will improve soon, and everyone can sleep well at night.

Lynette: I hope you're enjoying your new computer.

Apologies to anyone I've missed. Hope dibnlib is safe. Thought of her today.

    Take care, all.

  • I meant to include a post for Margo:

I hope that your floor is all dried out now and that your new flooring is installed or on the way.

Sending you strength. Hope you can attend some more shows.

  • Hello!   Been busy as Eldest Son came to stay last night at short notice:  he has gone off to a meeting today.

Sunny here, but its been really chilly   :-(    Put an extra blanket over my duvet last night.

Having problems again with my Tablet pc - the charging up connection has never been good, and frustratingly it often says "please use the dedicated charger or you will only get a trickle charge" - but I only use the cable which came with the tablet!!  Now its almost non existent, so will have to take myself down to the local techy shop to see if they can help.

Have rushed through everyone's posts and news:  quite busy on here at present, even without my ramblings!!  Thinking of all those travelling, such as dibnlib, and of course Margo is always in my thoughts.

We are off tomorrow to visit Eldest and family for the weekend, so hope to get lots of cuddles with Amber.  Their wedding is now only just over 2 weeks away, so the tension is building!  I have errands to do today, plus packing.  Bonnie is going to the Kennels tomorrow as sis-in-law can't have her: she is at this moment cruising down The Rhine with the (female) friend who is going to take Bonnie in during the wedding weekend.  So sis-in-law can come to enjoy our wedding celebrations when she gets back from her hols.

  • Good Morning Everyone. I have tried to post on here much earlier, but have had so many distractions this morning.

It was my turn for preparing the bowls club teas yesterday and then had friends round for dinner in the evening. Everyone very happy at the club, as we have won the main league. Still have to play matches in another league. Jumped up this morning as I knew OH hadn't put the garden bin out for collection and they do come around at 7.30am. A rather cold morning.

Two weeks ago my sister was told that she had bowel cancer. She has now been told that everything is completely clear, as the first scan was faulty and should not have been used !!! They have apologised. We are all greatly relieved as our mother died of bowel cancer, which had spread to the liver.

We don't have a TV in the bedroom. We used to have one , many years ago, but it was never used.

I have spoken to Margo. They are still waiting for their floor to completely dry before they have carpet etc. fitted. She did sound so much more relaxed.

I do hope that all will be fine for Dibnlib's holiday.

    George, Best wishes for Monday.

Linda, I know that dogs love to roll in fox poo, but Bonnie has excelled in finding human excrement. So sorry, that must have been horrendous.
Only two weeks before your son's wedding. Wonderful. Enjoy your weekend with Amber.

Rita, Please let us know how you are, now that you are on your own. I think you said that your family were staying for about three weeks.

I know I haven't replied to all your posts, but I need to read again now:-))

  • Wendy, I have seen quite a few articles on the TV about Dismaland. I hope you show us some photographs.

  • I've seen the dismal pictures of Dismaland on TV, too.  It does make you think!!

Had a most frustrating day:  this morning, lost an hour of my life I'll never get back, as they say:  spent 3/4 of an hour at the machines in Boots (chemists) trying to get my last two months worth of photos onto discs:  after that, I had to give up and complain to an assistant that the machine must be broken. She offered to help me, but I said "I bought an hour of time in the car park and its nearly up, I have to go!"  She still seemed to think it was me and not the machine, even though I think I  know what I'm doing on there - I often help others who are struggling, when I'm doing my pictures. They will no doubt find out the problem when the next person turns up to try and do something on it. They have these new "all singing and dancing" machines in store now, which are usually quicker but are far more complicated than the old Kodak ones we used to love.

This morning Bonnie ran about with a used tissue on her mouth from my handbag, then I realised that she had swapped it for my credit card wallet....... Had to chase her for it, which of course is what she is hoping.  This afternoon she stole my clean bra, just taken off the clothes line and put on a table ready to pack for the weekend:  she ran out into the garden with it and my OH offered to run around after her, as I headed her off -  he then stood in some just done Dog Poo on the lawn, whilst wearing his slippers........   Never a dull day, here!

  • George:  Its nice to hear from you again.  I will be thinking of you on Monday, and hope the outcome is good.

Brenda:  You sound busy these days.  Hope you recovered alright from feeling unwell, and are able to get things done. That sounds like a very serious mistake on the part of the meds looking at your sister's results - what a scare!  Good to know that it was a clear outcome after all that. She must feel wrung out now.

Diane:  You do have a colourful time there - I wish I could visit you and see all your wonderful wildlife.  Keep cool!

AQ:  Hope you get a reasonably quiet Nanny Day.  They must be growing fast, now.

Sorry I've not replied to All, but just too busy at present.  Have a nice Weekend, All!!

  • Look who came for tea!  One less Sparrow on our patch.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

Wow, OG!  What a fantastic bird - and your photos are great!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
