Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 30 August 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY FULL MOON!

Last week's chat thread is HERE.

I'm going to carry over Annette's links for the California Condor webcams (because I'm enjoying watching the funny looking fellas): Ventana Wildlife Society nest and feeding cams and Sespe Condor Sanctuary nest cam .

Also, Explore.org has a lot of interesting cams right now: underwater whales; sharks; the Grand Cayman reef; various underwater cams at Long Beach, California; grizzly, panda, and polar bears; puffins; a hummingbird nest; penguins; auroras; and various Africa cams. I like to watch some of them while meditating. Explore's Hawaii cams might be interesting over the next 2-3 days as Category 4 Hurricane Ignacio approaches from the east and tracks just north of the Hawaiian Islands, causing very high surf.

Everyone have a great week!

  • I must admit I haven't bought a paper for ages as read free ones online.

I must admit to doing all my online shopping and banking on my I phone so PC gets little use.

My girls always had TVs in their rooms with a strict curfew time. Many a time I cut the plug off!!! This resulted in 2 good things they are brilliant at changing plugs and like me they don't have one in their bedrooms anymore:-)

  • Good Morning.

  • Hello all

    Dull and cool here.

    Lovely pic, BRENDA!

I like WENDY's comments about bedroom TVs - the bit about cutting the plug off :-) My OH had a TV in the bedroom when I met and married him and I have tried, as much as possible, not to be the second wife who comes into the late wife's home and decides to change everything that she chose. If there had been a divorce it might have been easier but as it is/was I have tried to be as tactful as possible about things. That makes me sound very saintly. I can assure you that is absolutely not so! Eventually I just had to discuss the 70s style shag pile carpets. TVs and their room of residence were small fry in the scheme of things.

Callum has bought a car. He hasn't even had his first driving lesson yet. I gather that he knows how much money car insurance is likely to cost. He has been saving almost all his wages from day one of his apprenticeship also birthday and Christmas money. The good thing is that the car was purchased from the dealership that he has his apprenticeship with - Highland Audi. It isn't an Audi but was brought in as a part exchange. So the guys he works with have had a thorough look at it.

  • Good afternoon all have been keeping up to date although I haven't been posting. I didn't realise just how long this blog has been going but when you hear of the age of some of the grand children you then think back when the pregnancy was announced.

I like to read in bed and just this week I was that interested in getting a book finished that when I looked at the time it was 1:30. I also have a tele in the room but I only use it in the morning to watch the news while having my morning cuppa in bed. I have a teasmade so that I don't have to come downstairs to make my tea.

I go for my scans on Monday so I hope to get to know what is going to happen soon. My thoughts are with Margo and I hope things will improve for her soon.

It is very cold here for this time of year but it is supposed to get warmer next week. Hope everyone keeps well and has a good weekend

  • Lovely weather, predictably, since it’s OH’s museum day, so he can’t work in the garden, but that does mean I have a chance to catch up while he is out. Tuesday morning was really good, having coffee and catch-up with friends at the Old Toll Bar; I found the four children quite wearing, so OH took them outside for fresh air and a chat about local history – 10 and 12 were interested, not sure about 6 and 8 (the only girl). We had our lunch there after they continued northward, and then had to call at shops on the way home. In the evening, I had a long telephone chat with Daughter#2.

Yesterday, J was out in different directions – business in Dumfries, shopping in Carlisle, then back to Dumfries for a meeting – so we only saw him when he called in for lunch. We had a busy domestic day, and then the AGM of Gretna General Interest Group in the evening, with a shared supper. It included competition night, but we didn’t win anything for our photos.

Dibnlib – may have missed you, but I am thinking of you. I hope you will have a great time in Europe and not encounter any difficulties there. You two deserve a proper holiday, so enjoy it!

AQ – good news about Miss L sleeping better – understandable that Miss J doesn’t do so well; I hadn’t realised her reflux problem had persisted this long. Sorry SiL has the flu – hope Daughter stays clear of it. The same thing happened here with flu vaccine last winter, which is how I got flu twice! Nearly due this year’s jab – oh, heck, that means it must be autumn!

Margo – pleased to see you were feeling less stressed – I hope this continues. Do you have a dehumidifier in to dry out from the leak before getting new floor coverings? It’s surprising how much water a small slow leak can spread through the fabric of the house!

Brenda – I thought of you when we hung out our washing today; I hope you are having better weather now. It doesn’t sound as if you were too cross about the neighbours’ dogs coming to visit! Love that Kestrel pic from the Dyfi nest!

Heather – maybe family need to concentrate on what Step-granddaughter is eating rather than what she is leaving out! Sounds as if your encouragement to healthy vegetarian eating is more helpful than worrying that she may have an eating disorder. Well done to Callum, getting his own car – a good incentive to pass his test; having him able to drive will also be an asset to his employer.

Linda – could the headaches and tummy upsets be caused by mixing wine and medications? I hope you have read the patient leaflets carefully. Sorry the table was somewhat unsatisfactory. Welcome to the world of blepharitis! Mine was diagnosed when I was seeing the ophthalmologist for the iritis, so once the various iritis drops could be stopped, I was put on moisturising daytime drops, and also some horrible sticky stuff for night time. Luckily I was soon able to stop the sticky stuff and he said I could use extra of the daytime ones whenever I needed. There is also still the routine of massaging with a hot flannel, which I now only do about three times a day for one minute rather than the original twice for 5 minutes each time, and I seem to have it under control. I hope the treatment works for you too, and that you have a good weekend with little Amber.

Wendy – liked your description of yourself being handed over from one Daughter to the other like a precious parcel! I remember my Uncle going to the Great Dorset Steam Fair every year – but to look at machines rather than listen to music!

Clare – I won’t have televisions in bedrooms – and would never have let the children have them, but I know youngest granddaughter uses much of her sleeptime awake and on Facebook!

George – good to see your post – special thoughts for Monday and then for results.

Off to be busy in the kitchen now – and maybe also some Christmas card preparation. An evening at home with J out again, so that could be productive too!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Just been looking at young Condor - she is getting so many adult feathers now, and sometimes appears to be quite itchy!

That reminds me, our Winter Robin (quite an orange colour, so probably a Scandinavian bird) returned to us this week!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning all:

Lindybird: Best to just ignore any future suggestions form me since you and OH are clearly already several steps ahead.  :-)   Very brave of you to take on the news before turning out the light; I can barely watch it at any time these days, but at least you don't have Donald Trump trumpeting his nasty philosophies at you. I was in the check-out line at the store the other day and he was on the front cover of nearby Time magazine. I turned it around so I wouldn't have to look at him.

WendyB: Oh dear, "aged parent handover day."  Hope you didn't dribble or f**t or do other aged parent stuff during the exhange. :-)  Love the idea of the Steam Show - I'd be there for sure. Will be interested to hear about Dismaland; sounds like a hoot.

Clare: I don't think I could get used to watching any program on a phone. How do they do it? Don't do banking or online shopping on my phone either a la wendyB.

Heather: Can't imagine why you got rid of the shag carpeting. "-)  It wasn't green was it? (The default color here at that time.)  Callum clearly a man with a plan! Good for him.

George: Always good to hear from  you. Let us know how things go.

OG: Christmas?!  I can't stand to think about it. J seems to be out and about a lot these days and doing well.

Will take it a bit easy today. We have to figure out which paint to tell painter to buy. Will save sorting out pushy Cecile Brunner until tomorroow p.m.  The painter will be pressure washing the house Saturday, then starting prep work Monday.  Am feeling guilty pleasure that pressure washing prior to painting is still allowed under drought restrictions. That means lots of dust will get washed away....  Hurray!

  • Well, I've left OH watching the sad and awful news about the refugees on the TV news at 6 o'clock - just couldn't carry on watching it. I don't want this post to attract any political comments, please.

  • Heather: No political comments but humanitarian aid would seem to be imperative to say the least.

  • Sorry, too busy to comment but have read all your posts. See you all tomorrow.
