Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 9 August 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's chat thread is HERE.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week, especially OG and Eagle-Eye, who are on holiday.

I had a wondrous experience on Thursday. Temps had cooled a bit, and it was very windy. I went outdoors, just to check my patch. I saw R. T. Hawk come from the direction of the creek flood plain. He was riding the thermals and soaring around and around. If a bird can look happy, he did.

Shortly, his big pale mate came from the same direction. She, too, was floating gracefully on the thermals. She saw me and stared at me for a minute or so, then she started soaring downward, floating in circles in my direction. She kept watching me and moving closer. I froze and made sure she could see my open hands (so she'd be reassured that I didn't have a gun).

She descended quite close to me, and I thought for a moment that she was going to come to me. I thought about holding my arm out to see whether she'd land, but I was afraid I'd scare her. She never screeched at me, and she wasn't diving aggressively -- just floating above me and looking at me curiously. Finally, she caught a thermal and lifted back up into the sky.

R. T. Hawk had been unconcerned, and he was soaring over the creek. His mate followed in his direction, and then they flew toward the ridge together.

I was very honored to see her so close.

The annual Perseid meteor shower will appear on 11-14 August. The waning crescent moon guarantees dark skies, so the meteors should be dramatic. Folks in the northern hemisphere should see 50 meteors per hour, with a third of that number in the southern hemisphere. Most of the meteors can be viewed in the wee hours before dawn, but you could get lucky and see a beautiful earthgrazer in the earlier part of the night. Info HERE.

  • Yesterday we had brekkie at MC then a 2 hour plus walk at LaE. It usually only takes 1 hour 1/4 but we met so many lovely people to talk to. We then really spoiled ourselves by having a light lunch at Druie cafe where we happened to be sitting on the next table to one of our vets.

Today I spent a very uncomfortable 40 minutes at the dentist. I was having an old filling replace in an awkward place. Hence the discomfort. Relaxed afterwards by swimming 30 lengths.

LYNETTE Apart from Bensons ball kleptomania he is now very good.

    Benson at LaE yesterday

  • Have gone to bed early - went to give blood donation after lunch, then felt faint whilst recovering afterwards. Because they have to be careful, they made me stay with my feet up, then my OH drove over to fetch me home. Felt rather foolish! Had a rest when we got home, then my OH cooked us some dinner before walking across the fields & down the road to fetch the car back we'd left behind. (They took my blood pressure whilst I was recovering, and pronounced it OK!).
  • Nanny day alas. I don’t feel much better for yesterday’s rest but OH is worse. Dau is taking MissJ to Doc this morn as she is no better and has been spewing when she coughs, poor wee thing. Appt is early before I can get there, so Doc will enjoy all 3 kids in her tiny room.

  • Evening all:  Don't know where the day went.  Got up at 3 a.m. last night and parked myself on the patio to see the Perseid shower.  Did manage to spot about 6. Two were pretty bright, most were in my peripheral vision so by the time I focused on them, they were gone!

Clare:  Don't be too good at the Admin stuff; you don't want to end up stuck in an office away from the people and the birds!  :-)

Lindybird: And how do we get to your place? Sounds like one of those harvest holidays - will we be picking the plums and digging the potatoes ourselves?  I half-expect to see Ms D' pinky raised in subsequent visits.  :-)   Did the blood people have any suggestions as to how to avoid feelng wobbly next time you want to give blood?

dibnlib: Hope no repercussions from that filling. Benson has long ears!

AQ: So sorry you're still feeling rough; sounds like a winter bug that's doing the rounds.  Has Dau caught it yet?

Has been really hot today with more to come through the weekend - ugh. Meeting my Kansas City friend in Malibu for late breakfast tomorrow and plan to do a bit of shopping on the way home.

Hope you all have a good Friday - and best thoughts for Margo.

Don't worry - that's the last thing I want to happen.  It was kind of inevitable they would have something like this which needed doing and it makes sense to make full use of volunteers with an office background.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Good Morning, Clare & Everyone! Feel better after having an early night & rising late this morning! It's pouring with rain here and apparently it will stay like that for most of the day today. Clare - hope they make good use of your enthusiasm at Minsmere!
  • Back later with some replies!

  • Glad you've had a good night, Lindy.

  • Thank you, Clare.

Sorry I've not been back on to post some replies, as I've had another busy day, as we are off tomorrow to visit our granddaughter Amber.  Its a long journey so we are leaving Bonnie with a dog kennel just for one day, as my sis-in-law is busy with three other dogs at present.

I see everyone else has been busy, too!!  Hope you've all had a good day in spite of the rain, in UK.

dibnlib:  Lovely pics of Benson!!  What a cutie!

  • Hello all

I've lost the plot a bit, we worked our socks off yesterday in the garden because we got a good day.

I have been reading all your posts but as mentioned above, was flagging so no proper replies.

We promised ourselves a busy day in the garden today but family visitors arrived and it was lovely and all too easy to sit and spend time with them.

Lovely pics, ANNETTE and LINDY xx

Thanks to all for your news.

    Back later!
