WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 2015

Hallo all:  Happy New week.

Well, what can I say? I can't even do stupid links these days; no idea why things aren't linking but life is too short to fret about it....

Rita is doing her knee exercises, which aren't the best part of her day, but she'll get there we know.

OG: I've taken the liberty of copy/pasting your anniversary dinner menu for all to enjoy vicariously:  "Had a great meal at a country house hotel not far away.  Even the bread rolls were wonderful - fresh-baked and therefore really crisp, not hard (I can't usually eat what are normally referred to as "crisp" rolls!).  OH started with soup while I had a terrine of roasted vegetables; we both had beautifully roasted pork loin, with a theme of peas running through it: pea mash, pea puree and mange touts, as well as roasted root veg and garnished with a wee "haggis bon-bon" (breaded haggis).  OH decided in sticky toffee pud to follow - pleased I didn't as it had a fig in the middle which I would not have liked to find in there!  I had the most wonderful chocolate fudge cake ever - so beautifully light, whereas I usually find it very heavy.  J is out at a barbecue this evening so it was nice to have a meal out on our own but without leaving him out."   All sounds yummy (though not sure about the breaded haggis).

Brenda: I too am wondering how many floors up your son and DiL are in their new apartment.  Have you started looking at airfares yet?  OG has info on the Canada cake on last week's thread.

bjane: Hope you're too busy to post for all the right reasons.  Take care; good to see you.

Margo: Hope you feel up to dropping in this week.  Is your sister still popping by?  Hugs to you.

Earth to Diane!  Please call home.    :-))

Fountain is behaving itself as I type; it usually goes about three days before pooping out. Am prepared for investigative antics next time.

Have a good Sunday everyone.

  • Diane,   Love your beautiful card for MARGO.  What lovely flowers they are.

Don't know what it is with you and wildlife, you seem to attract a lot of critters LOL!!

"Nine red wasps, Sitting in a row:  Wondering if I'll stay, or will I go.   Big burly guys watching me panicking, I'll not be beaten so I'll just start dancing!"

  • LINDY- sounds like a lovely lunch and good day out!

I'm in bed, watching TV programme about the North West Passage, Franklin's expedition and also looking at FB, our own blog here and whatever takes my fancy. What did we do before these little tablet things lol

  • LOL   Diane!!   Should have made it longer!!

Hope you are now settled with your new pc and all is well.

Heather: I mourned my computer like a lost love, and I was aimless and lethargic until I got a new one installed. LOL!!!
  • Speaking of technology:

My friends in Indianapolis, where I was pet-sitting, have HBO (premium channel TV). I watched the movie Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, and Morgan Freeman. The critics hated it, but I loved that movie. I recommend it, if you have access to it. I thought it was both moving and thought provoking.

You can watch the movie trailer and read more HERE.

It was especially interesting, considering that over 1,000 eminent scientists, including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk (SpaceX and Tesla), and lead researchers at Microsoft and Google have recently expressed loud concern over artificial intelligence and its potential to evolve beyond our control and understanding, as well as create a global AI arms race and independently make war.

I know that at least a couple of you like movies.

  • Evening all:  Just sat down to catch up when OH announced there was a bird in the living room - looked like a Towhee.  He fluttered up against the front screen door - right by clueless cat who was busy lolling - then when OH opened the door, went and sat on the couch for a minute before zooming out the patio door, at which point cat woke up and realized what she'd missed. It hid behind a large cactus so I left a trail of birdseed from there to the open area. Seed still there but bird has flown.

Diane: You snuck into my garden to photograph that Plumeria for Margo! Too bad you couldn't send the fragrance as well. I see you're honing a reputation among the locals as that crazy lady from down the road...  What a hoot.  Don't imagine they had smart phones stuffed down their dungarees, so no fear of your showing up on YouTube.  :-))  Re the dangers of artificial intelligence, I can't help but wonder if it's all that bad when I look at Donald Trump!  Are you going to watch the first Republican debate on Thursday? I might just because it looks to be an absolute circus with him on the stage.

Heather: I remember wearing lovely summer dresses as a teenager and being so very upset when I had to put cardigans, raincoats, etc., over them because of the rain. Now I have winter clothes - or what passes for them in this part of California- that will last forever at this rate.  Had to smile at the thought of older UK males "bonding"  - I assume that doesn't mean drumming circles?  :-))  By the way,  have you read Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller? It's about her childhood growing up in Kenya in the 50s/60s with her very colorful parents.  I just read her second book: Cocktails Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, which focuses mostly on her very "colorful" mother, and her third, Leaving Before the Rains Come, about her life in Wyoming (mostly her marriage, which eventually ended).  That was my least favorite, but still good.  I always get a bit panicky when I don't have any books waiting to be read. Picked up Gone Girl, which is growing on me and also the one by Stephen Hawking's first wife.

Brenda: I seem to have had a mild bug too - I'm blaming it on the heat and humidity (I can hear Diane scoffing at that!). It will have to be gone completely by tomorrow when family arrives for a beach day (look for me nodding off in the chair).  The Rocky fire north of San Francisco is indeed awful and quite unprecedented in its ferocity and the speed with which it's spreading, according to the firefighters.  I see the same law that affected our a/c class seems to apply to clean windows!

Lindybird:  Wow - that's a long wait for lunch, but it sounds well worth it.

Have a good Wednesday all and of course, special hugs to Margo.   I notice we still haven't heard from dibnlib....

  • Dear all

Thank you  again for your thoughts and diane for the beautiful card. Sorry I am not posting but very hard to put into words how I am feeling at this time. OH is giving me lots of support and so is my sister but they are both worried for me. We have serval shows booked so trying to focus on those although not too successfully. Also making plans for some trips out one chemo is over. Both my doctor and the Registrar advised me to do things I want to do. OH will also start to work more from home so that will help me to know he will be with me more.

Hope you are all keeping well, you are all in my thoughts constantly.

    Margo x

  • A picture for  Margo:

    Sorry its being so hard to cope with, Margo:  I can imagine your mind is running on overtime.  It calms me to think of you sitting with your dear little cat, and knowing that you have such a caring and practical husband.  {{BIG HUGS}}

  • Rushed out this morning, having overslept after a "tossing & turning" kind of night - perhaps I ate too much cheese yesterday!

Been for my dental check-up, the six months seem to come around quicker and quicker nowadays. Was blushing as my dentist told me he wished all his patients brushed so well!  I said it was because I didn't want to have to come & see him too soon!  He said to leave it for 9 months this time, which I'm happy to do.  Now I just have an appointment this afternoon with the Nurse at our Medical Practice as they are calling all of us over a certain age in, for an M.O.T.   Just hoping they don't find anything untoward that I have, I said to the dentist this morning that I have the usual aches & pains but am lucky with my health.  If she gives me good marks, I shall float homewards on a cloud......

Off out with Friend tomorrow:  Two Ladies Who Lunch !   She is trying to fit a lot of fun in before Autumn when she goes to Have her Knee Done, just like AQ and Rita.  She does not relish the prospect of the afterwards bit.

Diane:  Thanks for the links to your references to the film.  Will look them up after lunch. Glad you're settled now with the new pc:  I hate being offline now, it has really become a habit and it feels very disconnected, not to be, well.... connected ;-)

Annette:  Your cat certainly must be relaxed if she doesn't see a bird in the house until its too late, LOL!
