Hi Willow. As I understand what we call "buzzard" over here, they eat animals that are already dead. In fact they are known to circle around an injured animal waiting for it to die before they close in for their meal. They should be appreciated for their clean-up qualities but instead have a rather negative connotation. We frequently see a black siluette souring overhead.

Fred's answer to my questions about his osprey photography:
I was fishing with my son-in-law, Bill, and his dad on Lake Kissimmee in FL when this osprey flew over, wheeled, plummeted, and turned the fish into the wind stream to head back to the nest.
Hello June. Love your osprey photos brilliant! Would love to see an osprey fishing! Maybe Ill get lucky next Rutland visit! Buzzards here eat small mammals and rabbits and birds but Im not sure if they eat carrion I think they are mainly hunters. I could be very wrong though! Ive seen our local buzzards hovering like kestrels over the field which is full of rabbits lately :)
The birds you describe sound a bit like vultures but im not sure if you get them in US. Our crows and rooks do a brilliant job of cleaning up dead creatures and road kill.

Good evening all. Beautiful photo of EJ. So nice to see the still here! Every day they are here is a bonus :)
Hi Willow, typing difficulties, so i'm quiet.
Oh dear! I thought that may be the case! Just been reading the "Intruders at LG" thread with great interest dont know why I didnt read it before also a great thread about Fenrir. Im glad its been created as he could very well have been the next reigning male at LG but luckily and much to my huge delight and everybodt elses our dear beautiful Odin returned!
With the imminent departure of dear EJ and Odin I have been reflecting on all the sad events that have taken place this year at LG but also at Rutland Water where the old Mr Rutland was almost turfed out of his nest after a battle with 2 younger males the eggs were destroyed and no chicks for site B either. There seem to be many young ospreys about looking for somewhere to breed and can be good news as well :)
