HAPPY NEW WEEK!
Last week's Chat thread is here.
I hope everyone is safe from the bad weather in the U.K.
Margo: Sorry it was so frightful for you.
Clare: Congratulations on your new opportunity at Minsmere. Enjoy!
Brenda: Sorry you lost your match with the men folks. :-) I'm sure your new roses are lovely.
Lindy: I hope you enjoy your time in Wales.
Annette: So glad you all had such a nice day at the beach.
Heather: I hope things are improving for your family in France.
AQ: I've enjoyed looking at your photos. I like the Koroit Library, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and the Portland Tram; also, I want to live in the little Kalangadoo Church with the green roof! Very lovely.
You might be interested in seeing this old Catholic church near me: see here and here. Built in 1886, it stands in the rustic, restored 19th century Billie Creek Village in Parke County. Also, here's the historic old Log Church, built in 1871, in what is now Turkey Run State Park/Forest near me.
Hello to everyone. I hope this post makes sense. My neighbors are blasting off huge fireworks. They terrify me. I hope they don't set the woods on fire. Poor, poor wildlife. I hate July 4th.
Thankfully a quiet day here if you don't count the seagulls chick that landed on the flat roof of one of our dormer windows last night. It's parents were screaming at it but it was unable to fly away. This morning, ditto and then it managed to fly down into our garden. It was being fed by its mum who then started screaming at it to no avail. My OH kind of walked it out of the back garden towards the front of our house. Suddenly the parents started dive bombing him, he got inside with no head injury(they can be vicious when defending their young).
Shortly afterwards I spotted one or two wasps crawling into 'my' garden shed. It's not OHs potting shed, it's one that isn't opened often, I store odds and ends in it. OH investigated and found what he called a' beautiful' wasps bike(nest). Not sure if I agree about the beautiful bit, he was pointing out the marvellous construction.
So with seagulls and wasps we are having fun.
Is it a herring gull chick, Heather? Their parents are very formidable. You shouldn't get attacked if you don't go too close to the chick - they'll let you know how close is too close as they'll start flying low over your head, though if you go no closer you should both be safe. If you put a bit of food out for the chick regularly they will probably calm down a bit - they do eventually show a degree of tolerance to people who demonstrate they're not a threat.
Can't help you with the wasps nest - I would have probably run a mile if I came face to face with a nest of the things!!
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
CLARE- I think it is a herring gull. OH encouraged it into our front garden because there is more space for it to flap and fly. Can't see it now but suspect that it is down somewhere around here, maybe not our garden, as can see and hear what are presumably the parents making noise and swooping down.
My child minding at Dau’s Physio was a breeze. It was lunchtime and I just offered finger food to gaping beaks LOL. Problem was later in the day when MissJ was too tired for her nap. It took so long to settle her that it was late pm and then I had to wake her for her teatime or else she would not go to sleep that night. Dau snatched 20 mins nap. She is managing much better with chores, cooking meals, etc. If only the wee devils would sleep through the night and let their parents sleep.
AQ: Great that your daughter is coping better - that must be a relief. It can't be long for the kiddies will start sleeping through the night .... can it? That'll be a real breakthrough. I can see the stress levels plummeting.
Diane: Too bad the bars don't go out of business in a bad economy. Any chance you'd ever want/be able to relocate?
Heather: Good luck with the gulls - and the bees. Will you leave the latter alone or have someone remove them? Don't like the idea of your finding someone in your driveway - wonder what he was doing before he decided to leave.... My sister and BiL live in a tiny village in Lincolnshire and have a motion-activated camera aimed at their front gate. When the television is on and the camera is activated, that image preempts the TV program. I was surprised one evening when I looked through their living room window where they were watching television and saw myself arriving at their front door.
Sending good thoughts to all for a good Thursday
Strange photo, LINDA. I am assuming it's an anteater and offspring, but why on a blanket? I'm still looking forward to your account of Bonnie's weekend fishy adventures!
AQ, pleased the children are easier to handle now; in a couple of years, you'll all be wondering what all the fuss was about. As you say, sleep for their parents would make a real difference.
Usual S*** Law for Thursday - weather fine but OH will be out at the museum - doing the whole day to cover kids' activities. However, we were pleased with our garden achievements on Tuesday.
Have a good day, everyone. Special thoughts for young Helen. BBL.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Good morning all-
AQ- As OG says, in a couple of years time all this will be the topic of over dinner laughs and reminiscences. The stuff of family life. Sometimes the grandchildren ask me to tell them about their parent's misdemenours as children. I have a reasonably good idea what to leave out!
OG - Agree about the weather not falling in with our plans!
ANNETTE- our visitors are wasps, not bees. Last year we had a nest in the front hedge, not being very observant we hadn't noticed the nest or the activity and unfortunately the man who came to trim the hedge got badly stung. He was fine about it though, much calmer than I would have been.
Just going to finish packing,we leave for Aberdeen area after lunch. We'll stop on the way,in Elgin andtake a coffee break with the youngest family Fingers crossed for the bride getting a sunshiny day tomorrow - we are taking no chances though and will have a big umbrella in the car.
Have a good day, everyone
Have a wonderful weekend HEATHER. Sorry the kilt was not practical; they do charge the earth for alterations, I know, and I am sure wearing it too long would make him look shorter. I don't suppose he will be the only gentleman in trousers!
