WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY JUNE 28, 2015

'Allo all.  Hope it's a good week for everyone.  Ghastly news from Tunisia - those poor people, sitting on the beach enjoying the sunshine....

Heather:  There's at least one situation like yours in every family (sometimes two or three!).  Makes you wonder where these folks came from  I mean, can they really be related to sensible grown-up like us?  :-)

Diane: We're on the edges of a tropical storm system heading into the Southwest which could end up in your neighborhood in a few days.  What a pain. It must keep on on edge the whole time.  I do hope the trees around your house are sound   We don't have many needs when it comes to cars, but we just have our trusty Honda Accord and our lovely old 73 Ford Ranger, which guzzles gas big time and is a bear to drive down Santa Barbara's narrow streets (narrow because of parking on both sides - and not narrow at all compared to some roads in England!).  The truck is in great shape but sits out most of the time and it's is beginning to rust in a few places. It takes up the entire garage and I'm the one who takes it and the stepladder to the do-it-yourself car wash where I nearly get blown off the ladder by the water pressure. Truck is too big for a drive-through wash.  Anyway, it's slowly deteriorating and I'd rather see it go to someone who will really care for it - it's pretty much a classic a this point.  I'm thinking sort of long term for a newer SUV with minimal bells and whistles that is versatile and economical.  We're looking at hybrids, but there's not a big choice in the smaller SUVs.  The Toyota RAV 4 will come in a hybrid version for 2016 - at a cost of about $30K!  Typically we buy newer used vehicles but with the recession, folks seem to have hung on to the popular models much longer than usual and the ones advertised on, say, craigslist, have lots of miles on them.  Still, there are much, much worse dilemmas to deal with in the world.

Lindybird: Good news from Glaslyn then.  Ha! Liked the 1-in-5 joke.

That tropical storm that's east of us has brought clouds, humidity - and a sprinkling of rain!  More sprinkling possible in the next two days. Hey!  It's wet. we'll take it.

  • Lynette – I don’t mind the chilly weather. I just add another layer of wool. I avoid northern Aussieland with the tropical heat as high humidity flattens me. Once when temp reached 32 C & was very humid, I spent most of a London day in an art gallery with a-c.

I thought surely Diane would be feasting on nettle soup, washed down with nettle tea <grin>

Can you believe it? This morn I took my car to crash repairer, drove in, and as I was gathering my handbag <crash> One of the workers had backed a car into my front passenger corner. Not much damage. Some paint retouches needed and new plastic thingie around the headlight. I was speechless. The workers gathered and cheerfully told me I was in the right place for it to happen. Really!!!! After a short wait I collected my loan car, a minute 2-door. OH said to put his lunch in a smaller bag or it wouldn’t fit in the car. I said I’d cut him half a sandwich LOL   re nanny duty, I intended to tell Dau that I would complain to Equal Opportunity or my Union that I get the long nanny days and OH the short ones. But, tee hee, his dreams of having a short day disappeared when Dau phoned to say she has a cold and Miss3’s Playdate was cancelled again.

I have been picking up 201 stitches for half of the band of Dau’s long-line sleeveless vest (cardigan). With Tour de France nearing, I shall be ready to knit in time to the turning wheels!

  • AQ: That's a riot! Wonder if the guy who drove into your car still has a job. What? No roof rack for OH's sandwich?  :-)

  • Good Morning! Not too bad here in the night - put very thin covers on ourselves & had windows open with a breeze which came up. Well done USA in the football!! Back later.......
  • Happy Special Birthday to "Mr Dibnlib"!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG  Thanks from OH. Jab in the hand .....sounds painful.

Mini magnums delish.....all sorts of flavours...my fav being mint.

DIANE I  wear cool and loose as much as poss. At work we wear our chosen clothing from our range and as we are a travel/outdoor shop we have a fair selection to choose from. The trouble at work is that we are on a corner in the middle of town and have large windows all round, hence the sun streams in.

Maybe he will get a promotion for providing more work!

  • Been busy - trying to get more done before the Main Heat hits us here.  Its been breezy though, which helps.  My OH has gone off to see a man who does Dog Training, to try and get some tips on how to get Bonnie to walk better on the lead.  We are not succeeding very well with any of the ideas we got from books about this!

Out this afternoon, briefly I hope as its supposed to be HOT!  to collect some comfortable black mules which I ordered from dear old M&S so that I can change shoes at the wedding, when my high heels start to make me ache, LOL!  I want to be able to join in the dancing in the evening but will be suffering by then, I expect.  I also need a new mop bucket for the kitchen floor, LOL!  I know how to live glamorously  ;-)

Enjoyed watching Andy Murray yesterday afternoon, sat in the coolest room in the house.

  • Hello everyone

OG- having an injection in your hand? Is it steroid injection?

Whatever you are getting, I hope that it brings you some relief.

I remember when OH and I used to garden in the evenings. I'm afraid those days are gone, sadly. I sometimes potter about outside after dinner but apart from watering after sundown we generally watch TV (him) and read (me). We don't even sit in the same room as I like to read without background noise. What a pair!

Happily,I got a bag yesterday in TKMaxx. It will be a hat wearing wedding but I won't oblige. Hate hats, wore under protest at my childrens weddings. Even a fascinator doesn't appeal as I'm quite tall and always feel like a standard lamp if there is anything on my head:-(((

Nothing else to report, dentist was pleased with my teeth but hygienist not so. Half an hour of agony as she scraped tartar off and gave me, not for the first time (!) lessons in flossing, interdental brushes, tooth brushing and gum massaging techniques. I know the procedures but as with everything else, don't always follow instructions. When she mentioned peridontal disease and said that my upper molars might fall out I suddenly paid attention....as you do.

MARGO- it's really good to see you posting. I bet that you and Billie are searching for the shade.

Happy birthday to DIBLIBS OH. I hope that you both will go out for a celebration meal:-)

    Everyone- have a good day-

  • Well, I promised, so here goes – worst part is actually left handed mouse control! Right hand diagnosis (“trigger finger”) was confirmed by scan so had steroid injection done by my usual rheumatologist. Rest it today and tomorrow, then massage regularly. I don’t think it has yet dawned on OH that not using it means just that and somebody else has to do the things I won’t be doing!

Annette – that latest ISS supply failure was rather dramatic; they don’t seem to doing so well since NASA changed to outsourcing the launch rockets! Proms crossed the Pond a few years back – even primary classes have them in some places now – ridiculous £££s are spent on impractical suits, dresses and stretch limos!

Rita – you sound very relaxed on your holiday, despite Amber’s window adventure and Grandson’ travel arrangements.

AQ – sorry about disruptions caused by Granddaughter’s complicated social life; it will get worse! I hope the vaccinations went well today.

Hellen – good to see you on this thread – I hope you will pop in again.

Diane – pleased Mrs White-tail is still around; not so sure about those Turkey Vultures waiting for you to drop!

Clare – pleased to see you are all well but sorry you are still searching for work.

Linda – glad to see electrical cables are off the menu now, and that she didn’t pick up that piece of glass! Lovely garden photos. Nights are far too hot now, despite changing to the thin summer duvet.

Margo – pleased to see you and Billie are enjoying garden time – and that your recent tests showed acceptable levels.

Heather – I hope dental appointments went well, and that all is well with the baby down south – and the rest of your brood. See you have reported on dentist. Can’t use my new electric toothbrush – too big, fierce and clumsy for my wee mouth!

Vivienne – good idea to leave Greece while you can! I hope Venice will be comfortable and convenient.

Dibnlib - I am sure the ice creams tasted doubly good when boss was paying for them!

Lynette – enjoy the cricket ball; I do remember Devon Malcolm playing international cricket.

Replies done – back later with our week so far!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello All - really, really hot today, unbearable to put a foot outside just at the moment.  very hot in bed last night, had just a sheet but had to push that right down.  Dogs and cat flat out with the heat, and even tortoises have hidden themselves away in the shade.  My son has this afternoon off work and we were going somewhere but have decided it is too hot.

Heather - glad you managed to get a bag.   I hate wearing hats too and I asked my daughter if she would mind if I dId'nt wear one at her wedding although I did wear them at both my son's weddings.   I was really happy with the outfit I wore for my daughters wedding and was happy with no hat although I am sure some people would have thought I should have worn one.        I laughed at the tale of your visit to the hygienist, it sounds exactly like my visits to same!
