DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten Nest Sunday 21 June 2015

On Thursday night I got a message on my telephone asking me the time of the summer solstice. I was able to tell them that it would be 5.39pm BST on Sunday 21 June, which of course is today. Amazing to think that the sun has reached its most northerly point for 2015 and it will be moving south as from today.

The person who rang me was not the person who wanted the information but they did so on the grounds that I was likely to be able to supply an immediate answer. They were genuinely surprised to learn that the summer solstice could take place from 20th to 22nd June (19 June in 2488 but none of us are likely to be alive by then).

For summer solstice see  here

The remarkable thing was that the next day (Friday 19 June) I ran into the person who wanted this information on three separate occasions even though I rarely meet them. Coincidence eh?

Then as I came to write this another quite strange coincidence happened. Last year as many of you will know there was a great osprey saga in Nelson Canada. The day before yesterday  a chick was hatched on the the Nelson nest.

Now someone pointed out that this chick was hatched on the death of Nelson. Immediately I thought ....never Nelson died at Trafalgar on 21st October. Maybe they are thinking of  Waterloo (18 June)

But of course they were talking of dear old Nelson the osprey who died on 19 June 2014.

So why so many coincidences?  I guess that is because we only  got 366 dates and then things repeat themselves.

So how long before Odin and EJ start to chase the sun south? I would say 60 days at maximum, just over  8 weeks.

I can hear rain :( The forecast doesn't look great today.

Of course you are quite right Mary!  It was Moffer to kindly gave us the forecast, and it now 80 per cent chance of rain, so a slight improvement!  As for noise, I can only hear a faint chirrup, or rain drops, when wearing headphones, so it seems you and I are on the same sound channel some how!  I hear a few infrequent drops at the moment,

Thanks Sheila re the sound, I was thinking it was something my end, glad someone else only gets the sound faintly LOL....   I don't want to put the volume up to full or I would forget then get my ear drums blown out lol....

It is nice and sunny here, so shows how the weather varies, even when we are UP there and we stay at GOS, I have seen it bright there but dull at LG and vice versa....

I can hear a plink plink sound... but it doesn't look wet on the webcam as grass that is blowing in wind looks dry.

Laughing to myself here, is this is what we can come to that we are discussing the weather, the nest and the sound.

  • Well we know that one of them was around as per Moffer's capture at 11.20 am this morning.

So maybe they are having a loafing around day, pity we cannot see them doing this, have been getting used to watching them with the roaming camera, but its not roaming today.

  • 16.06  and we still have ENS, and cam decidedly fixed on it.  Possibly a few rain drops - volume on full thru the headphones, but I guess it could be insects hitting the mic!

I have just looked at LotL nest, and was amazed at the size of the three chicks there.

Oh, and by the way, Andy Murray has just won at Queens and is one of a short illustrious list who have won it four times.  None has five.... yet.

  • More raindrops I think, and an empty nest.

  • Well it is just tipping it down in GOS and has been most of the day. :-(

  • Oh dear NANNASCOT, how depressing for you.  It sounds as though it is getting heavier now, and definitely no sign of our two.  One blessing, it doesn't sound windy.

  • WendyB is a volunteer at LG this week. She reported that EJ did not roost in sight of the FH last night, and was not seen up to 9.15 this morning. Odin roosted on the nest tree lower branch and this morning he was sitting in the camera tree, looking wet and grumpy. This is the only news that we have today. Static cam on an empty nest, and no sight or sound of them. No new blog, so no news of Breagha either. It will be interesting to see if Wendy has any more news later :( sigh.

  • Moffer no more news from me as not on duty tonight but back on at 6pm tomorrow.

We aren't allowed to move camera that feeds live screen ( I can understand that as its easy to get wrong)  but we have a second set of controls that gives us more than the nest.

I live around 10 miles north of LG and it has rained constantly since 11am but has just eased up but sadly more predicted.

  • Thank you Wendy. I can understand only the full time staff can use the moving cam. I could be a disaster for anyone to get it wrong during the wee small hours.

We'll wait to see what happens tomorrow. Thank you so much for your info. It's very much appreciated.
