There's an abandoned egg, and a giant slug on the Loch Garten nest tonight...
Well, OK, it's not a giant slug, but in fact a lovely brown trout that Odin brought for EJ yesterday evening about 9pm, but she never came to claim it.
It's clear now to all our relief that EJ has finally given up on incubating the unviable egg, whilst Odin seems to have rediscovered a desire to deliver decent sized fish to the nest, but a bit late...
Here is one of Moffer's lovely captures of Odin the Magnificent delivering the 'slug'
And because it was only posted at the very end of yesterday's DU, but you wouldn't want to miss it, here is Birdie Num Num's video of Odin's earlier appearance on the nest around 7pm, in lovely evening sunlight
Glad tidings of brand new osplets at both Loch of the Lowes and Manton Bay are tinged with sadness that we won't be seeing any Loch Garten bobbleheads this season. But let's remember that both of these nests were in a similar no-chick predicament last year - and how their fortunes have now turned again.
So hopefully things will now start to settle back into a regular pattern, and EJ and Odin will continue to work as the magnificent pair they have been, to defend this nest and bond with each other for next season.
On with another day...

Hello MARYGK Sorry we missed you this morning . We were up at the centre first thing .We were there with EJ quite still and Fenrir on a nearby tree for a while. Odin appeared later. Unfortunately we were on our way home. So it is good to see your pictures and read your report. We must say a very big thankyou to Jen and all the enthusiastic young people who work at the centre. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, patience and expertise at setting up
equipment is just first class.
Now that EJ has left the nest for a while and given up on the
last egg.Odin is back and hopefully together they will be able at least to come back to their nest next year.
last egg and allowing Odin to get close again hopefully we see the pair at least hold on to the nest for next season
hellen
Sorry made abit of a mess of that.
It sounds like rain. I can hear EJ in the distance calling for fish.
Birdie Num Num's brilliant DU summary 2017
What a lovely post Hellen. Interesting that Fenrir was the intruder. EJ mantled but didn't shout at him. Tell tale sign that she knew this bird. Thank you.
Just checking in briefly again to catch up - thanks for late afternoon reports (Moffer and Scylla, you've almost been holding the fort single-handed today!), and of course, big thank you to Mary and Hellen for your on the spot reporting from LG. Mary - I loved your fabulous pics and the very witty captions (I think it's an indication, as well, that everyone is feeling sufficiently positive about the well-being of our precious pair that we are comfortable again with poking gentle and affectionate fun at them). As Tiger commented this morning, I think we should be satisfied, even if there are no chicks this year, that Odin and EJ remain together to hold onto the nest for the remainder of the season.
Empty nest now - good to think that EJ is again spreading her wings.
I'm off again now - see you all tomorrow.
It might be ENS but I can frequently hear EJ calling for fish, not too far away :)
EJ hoping for fish, Odin arriving for mating... did he make it for real?
