Daily Update ~ Loch Garten Nest ~ Monday, 18 May 2015

I understand that it was a quiet day on the nest on Sunday. Odin continued to pester EJ for sex while she continued to sit on the single egg which almost certainly will not hatch.

There only five more egg laying days in the 2015 season. It looks as if there are not going to be any chicks at Loch Garten in 2015.

  • Thanks SCYLLA Great captures

I'VE JUST ADDED ODIN TO PAGE ONE!

Pity you didn't let us know!!!  ROFL .

  • Morning all. Thanks for adding the Odin pics Scylla, and thanks to all for the earlier posts. EJ looks a tad damp, and has her best determined "I want fish" long haul call going. I hope she gets one this morning.

Well it was a major omission, MIKE, and you know what "we" are like if we're catching up later in the day.  I've had slam-dunk evidence of the first page being ignored.

And yes, I know you are joking ;-D

  • Good Morning to all who've already posted - you're all either 'night owls' or 'early birds'.  I woke to the sound of magpies having another go at our poor defending blackbird this morning - they are so ruthless in their pursuit of that nest :-(.

Thanks for the overnight pics - looks as though EJ has had a rather peaceful night with a brief 'fishless visit' from Odin.

It really does look as though he's trying to 'starve her' off that nest at the moment, so he can remove the final egg .............. such a shame as we KNOW, if it WERE viable, it would be his 'one and only' of this season - so sad. But would she forgive him for ousting what she seems to consider 'their only child' this year?

I'm longing to turn the sound OFF on the webcam for two reasons -

    1. she sounds so pitiful

    2. my ears need a rest from her cries

    - but of course, then I wouldn't be able to hear IF there was a fish delivery.  Decisions, decisions!  Think I'll persevere for a little longer ;-).

So envious reading various memories of spending time at 'the forward hide' - you lucky people.  LG IS a delightful place - I loved our visit two years ago :-).

Have a good day everybody - Ollie xx

  • PS, I added the video but had to do it several times before it would show up.

  • Morning OLLIE :-)

And so say most of us, I'll bet, but like you we can't risk missing a fish.

  • Thanks for the video of Odin visiting, Scylla!

He practically skied over her head didn't he?! Not sure if I were EJ, I'd find that kind of bonding act particularly endearing...

  • Morning everybody - thanks for all updates so far. Rather a depressing start to the day, what with the damp weather and no fish.

Have read through the very interesting discussion last night on osprey numbers and lack of, and/or, provision of further nests, the discussion being instigated by Wendyb's astute observation, quoted here:-

"Trying and everyone else I worry about next year as these youngsters will be a year older in their development... The incumbents will be a year older and the new boys and girls have that nest earmarked...just a thought".  (copyright Wendyb)

Wendy, I hadn't thought of that. It's probably really not a good idea to become as familiar with, and attached to, one particular pair of breeding ospreys as many of us on here are.

What you predict is bound to happen sooner or later. So perhaps we should just enjoy the privilege of watching the long-standing partnership of this magnificent pair while we can.

  • Morning OSM. That's a very sobering thought at this time of the morning :(

Every year young Ospreys earmark nests on their travels to find one of their own. This year is exceptional. I hope that we don't see the like for another few years. There's a long time, and a lot of hazards between now and the next breeding season, to say the least, migration.
