DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Saturday, 09 May 2015

Yesterday afternoon (according to those on the scene - it was among a lot of detail that we missed due to severe cam problems), the orange-chested male intruder "OC" dropped a fish onto the nest, and after a starving EJ took it away to eat it the carnage began.

In brief!

Anyone looking?

The orange-eyed destroyer.  (I have to say, unfairly I know, that he has none of the "gorgeousness" of Odin the Magnificent.)

EJ returned with the tail-end of the fish, which she continued to eat despite the scene that greeted her:

EJ cleared the ground and proceeded to incubate the one egg that appears to be left intact:

The threat to the surviving egg is great:

OC won't have it easy, he may not even prevail in the longer term - the other intruders are still on the case:

To cap it all after a long and harrowing day, it seemed that EJ was disturbed, probably by the pine marten, just before midnight:

A big ask Scylla & we're very good at doing just that aren't we?  Good thing that others point out the error of our ways!

  • OC flies in to protect the nest from the skydancer.  A few alarm chirps and he's now flown.....in pursuit?

  •

He flinched as if under attack and flew off.  Is an intruder going to be attracted every time he tries to deliver a fish?

Yes but one half of our split personalities knows better, no matter what we blurt out when we're upset  ;-)

  • Does he have a fish

  • EJ is watching what is being played out above and around her (unseen by us)

Tiger - many thanks for the link.  Been scrolling through the images, and certainly, Alba was a very dark-feathered bird with rather orange eyes, and a piercing stare.  All of which means nothing of course, and my possible hypothesis would only be valid if any of BlueXD's surviving progeny are unringed.

When Blue XD appeared on the Loch Garten nest in March 2012 some of us thought that  he was S18 the partner of Green J. Roy Dennis assured us that Green J  had the same partner since 2000.

Now there was one nagging doubt that even Roy Dennis could not explain.

Now Roy Dennis caught Blue XD in the summer of 2013.  What  he discovered I do not know but he definitely changed his tune. He no longer says that Blue XD and Green J  have been together since 2000.

We know for definite that  Blue XD is not  S18 as both were tracked and they do not winter in the same place.

So the idea that Orange C is  an offspring of  Blue XD is a real possibility, but only a possibility until we get more evidence.

  • I think males chase males and females chase females. EJ can rest and see who may be her new suitor. Imagine if that was OtM skydancing - pipe dream

Actually, (spouting further nonsense here), it would be very ironic, in the present situation, if OC were, if fact, a half-sibling of Alba, in view of what Alba did to Chick 3...
