DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Saturday, 09 May 2015

Yesterday afternoon (according to those on the scene - it was among a lot of detail that we missed due to severe cam problems), the orange-chested male intruder "OC" dropped a fish onto the nest, and after a starving EJ took it away to eat it the carnage began.

In brief!

Anyone looking?

The orange-eyed destroyer.  (I have to say, unfairly I know, that he has none of the "gorgeousness" of Odin the Magnificent.)

EJ returned with the tail-end of the fish, which she continued to eat despite the scene that greeted her:

EJ cleared the ground and proceeded to incubate the one egg that appears to be left intact:

The threat to the surviving egg is great:

OC won't have it easy, he may not even prevail in the longer term - the other intruders are still on the case:

To cap it all after a long and harrowing day, it seemed that EJ was disturbed, probably by the pine marten, just before midnight:

  • Oh no!!! What a nightmare! Now what will happen, I haven't given up on Odin yet, he might just be lying low, healing himself!! (Fingers crossed anyway)

  • Sitting in the cup again. She just can't let go :(

  • Hello LEANNE, join in the mourning :-(

MOFFER, my stream is horrendous again.  Looks like we're stuck with it.

  • EJ hardwired to incubate nothing.  Poor girl. I hope the visual stimulus of female on nest is enough to continue to bond OC with both the nest and her, and to feed her.

  • Good morning everyone and thanks for all the observations. Particularly thank scylla for starting the new thread and for all the capture.

So a dramatic day then. The day when Loch Garten gets a new male osprey. Will you all learn to love him? Maybe a bit too early for that yet.

Or is this the first shot in a bitter war of succession?

  • Tiger could you look back at the question re a time frame IF there are to be eggs again?. (Olliebeak Page 12)

  • I hope not the latter Tiger. I am sure this time next week EJ will accept that she needs a new mate. I believe she new what was inevitable and both days stayed away long enough for OC do what he needed to do. She has been here before.

I gave my view in the  Osprey Chat Thread  last night.

In 2005 the eggs were broken on 25 April and the season was lost.

    (1) Very early days, TIGER, at this time he is completely alien to me, I cannot take to him at all.  Which means I may eventually, out of pity.

    (2) Good question that I phrased in a different way in my OP.  Although intruders continue to intrude (!) they don't seem very persistent - more 'sporadic'.

Much earlier in this thread I mentioned you and CHLOE in the context of being personally invested in this couple - I mean EJ and Odin - and finding this more difficult than dire times in the past.  I thought that you two, among others I can't name, would know, having been thru so much more than some of us, including me.

This is totally left field, and with no evidence whatsoever (don't know how to find the relevant threads on the forum), but looking at OC clearly on the cam, he does remind me in some ways of Alba.  I seem to remember she had very dark and distinctive head markings, and was certainly large, confident and very aggressive. Has Blue XD had any unringed progeny, do we know?

That is a very interesting idea.
