WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY APRIL 26, 2016

Happy New Week.

  • Spare a thought for my older sister.  She can't eat chocolate.....or any part of any pig!  Either of those - especially the pig - would be my worst nightmare come true.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Evening all: Had a lazy-ish day yesterday, then went off last night to the local Uni to see The Great War, a "live animated" production by Hotel Modern, a Dutch company. Quite unusual.  Went in feeling good; came out with a raging sore throat and woke up today with a lovely head cold. Blech. Did nothing but loll in the garden, read and watch the birds, which took all day!  :-)

    Thanks for all your news.

    Have a good Monday everyone.

  • Good morning. Dry night, clear sky so quite a frost. Now warming up in glorious sunshine. OH is pootling about on the deck, moving pots from the second half ready to whoosh down after (hopefully) treating the last part of the first half. A large deck to look after, but great for all the container planting! A domestic day for us both, indoors and out.

Heather and Wendy – I hope nobody needs the gritters today: I see the snow is slowly thawing on EJ’s nest. Remember the year (was it 2011) when there was still ski-ing in the cairngorms in June?

Clare – I don’t remember much about snow in Ipswich (although there is a photo of elder Daughter and her first snowman) – just those awful east-coast thunderstorms!

Brenda – that retaining wall sounds much nicer than bare brick, so pleased you took that option. Glad you have a start date, and are filling plenty of bins! Apparently Scottish Gas had booked the man to work Sunday so they phoned on Friday looking for work for him to do – don’t know what would have happened if they needed to divert him to a breakdown! Sorry about your OH’s problem with cheese – must limit your menu choices somewhat. I would find it very difficult to eliminate cheeses – so useful for cooking and I really enjoy them at any time.

Clare – elder Granddaughter is also fish-intolerant – also apples and stone fruits; apple is difficult as a lot of other fruit products contain mallic acid from apples.

Annette – sorry about the sore throat and the cold starting – I hope you will shake it off soon; look after yourself.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good Morning Everyone. A beautiful sunny , but cold morning, with the chance of a shower later.

Annette, Obviously more time is needed for lolling in the garden, watching birds and reading. Hope you soon recover from your cold and sore throat.

OG, About ten years ago, our daughter was frequently feeling unwell, stomach cramps, being sick etc. and it was finally found that she had become lactose intolerant. She had eaten/ drunk all dairy products before the sickness began. How do these things start !! Cooking meals can become a headache, between OH and daughter's problems.

  • Good morning everyone

I'm sorry to hear that you have a cold and sore throat,ANNETTE. Hope it doesn't last too long. Meantime, you have my permission to loll around :-)

BRENDA - A real shame for your OH when he loves cheese. I too, love it and eat it just about every day in some form. Tonight I will eat pasta with pesto and parmesan cheese. OH will not eat such food( he wouldn't dignify such a meal by calling it food!) and will have cold leftover chicken with chips and salad.

It is bright today, 6 degrees. OH has gone to the bowling green. First outdoor game of the season.

    Have a good day,everyone.

  • BRENDA - it is weird how food intolerances can suddenly manifest themselves.  Granddaughter never could eat fish, but the apple problem started last year when she was recovering from glandular fever.  Daughter#2 is a vegetarian, but can no longer tolerate any pulses - including soya beans; this means serious reading of all labels - even a lot of chocolate contains soya products!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • My OH was told by East Grinstead hospital, a few months ago that he could start driving again, after his graft operation, but the DVLA insist that they must do their  own tests !! We thought that would mean an independent eye specialist, but NO. He has to go to a Specsavers in Hastings on Thursday. I would have thought that EG hospital were more qualified to judge.

  • Oh, BRENDA, that is quite ridiculous!  I would have thought E G would have checked the optometry as well as the health of the eye; I know when I was being seen, my vision was checked at every visit.  And this has taken so long - I had thought he was already cleared to drive!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • That's funny My friend's husband has just had to renew his licence because of vision problems and DVLA sent aa form that they filled in with information provided by the hospital!

  • "Curioser and curiouser" said Alice!
