Weekly Chat (all topics) Sunday, April 18. 2010

Hi all: Don't forget to check last few comments of last week's chat and a lovely photo from OG - of Loch Garten I assume. Alan: Wonderful close up of EJ on the last Daily Update. Thanks to everyone else for all the news from far and wide.

Just in from Earth Day event, which had a lot more transportation (electric/natural gas, etc) options on display this year, including bikes of all shapes and sizes (SB is a big bike town with lots of bike paths, even throughout downtown).  Spoke to a friend of a friend there who is setting up a raptor rescue center at the Natural History Museum; also the California Condor group who are trying to figure out how to set up a live cam at the condor feeding station in the back country. They're thinking maybe solar power, but then there's the problem of relaying the signal, etc.  If that's successful, they may try one at the nesting sites, but the problem is that condors don't nest in trees - they like caves, so a logistical hurdle for further down the road. Not to mention the "permit" hurdles, which are major given that the condors are still highly endangered.  In addition to the usual solar, green, organic farms, foods and other community display booths there was the usual band and "green" gifts area. Didn't buy anything but did visit my friend with his spiffy electric car and bumped into another friend - a "Master Gardener" at another booth where we sat and chatted for an hour.

All quiet on the LG and LOTL nests right now; doesn't look windy or wet.

  • Good Morning Margo. I have been looking at RSPB Arne on the web site as I have never visited it.   It sounds a beautiful place for birding etc. but can't find, as yet, how big the site is. Have you any idea ?

Thanks BrendaH. I will have a look at that later.

Here is a pic I took yesterday of the osprey chainsaw sculpture at the entrance to the Lyndon visitor centre at Rutland Water:

Good morning Alan sculpture amazing I would like to have one of those in my garden.  A great deal of work must have gone into this.

  • Brenda I live very near to Arne but would you believe have never visited.  I think it is quite a large site.  Need OH to retire so we can do all the things we never have time for.  I know it is a good place for birding.  OH job very demanding although he enjoys it very much. He is an accountant and often has to work some of the weekend, think we will have to buy lottery tickets so he can retire and we can do all the things we want to do.

Just looked up Arne and it covers 1250 acres.

As I typle think it is Odin who has flown in and he obviously wants to take over egg duty.  Oh no he is off again, just checking his EJ is OK.

  • Thanks Margo, I was just about to write that I had found the correct info. It is not too far for us to visit. ( about 100 miles from here) My husband is now telling me that I should remember where it is, as we used to live in Hampshire ( about 30 yrs ago !! ) and we would often drive down to that area.

  • Glad you all seem to have enjoyed the BBC news clip. Ospreys are clearly on the spread.

  • Thanks Tiger. Roy really loves these birds, doesn't he?

  • Chloe: Think Brenda caught that and edited her original to add crows (for a minute I read "destroyed by local cows."  :-)  Nothing like getting even more confused.

Tiger: Many thanks for that link - finally, a look at the famous Roy Dennis.  What an interesting idea - love the authenticity of adding chick poop!  Wonder if these look-alikes will survive the crows.

  • Glad that some of you have finally had a chance to see Roy Dennis, as we are always mentioning him or his books.  His enthusiasm is infectious.

Have put in a short spurt of weeding/feeding/watering looking at dead ? stuff in the garden.  Must have burnt a few calories there!

Thanks to OG for interesting description of lovely day out, plus her continued photos of various birds, they are all very good, OG!

When I visited the Doctors surgery yesterday::  the car park has some mature trees around it and a railway cutting next to it:  when I emerged from the side door, a bird caught my eye.  It was a Jay, and he was clinging to the rubber around the window of a flash sports car in the car park, and admiring himself in the wing mirror!  He hopped off the car, then came back for another look. Not sure if he thought it was a rival for his lady's affections or was just fascinated by this handsome fellow.  I watched for a while but dare not go any nearer or he would probably have flown off. No camera with me!  bah!

  • Saw one of those jolly & humorous fridge magnets in a shop:  just my style. It said:

"Please do not touch the Dust.   Testing in progress"

  • Looks like BOT barn owls have their first egg
