Weekly Chat (all topics) Sunday, April 18. 2010

Hi all: Don't forget to check last few comments of last week's chat and a lovely photo from OG - of Loch Garten I assume. Alan: Wonderful close up of EJ on the last Daily Update. Thanks to everyone else for all the news from far and wide.

Just in from Earth Day event, which had a lot more transportation (electric/natural gas, etc) options on display this year, including bikes of all shapes and sizes (SB is a big bike town with lots of bike paths, even throughout downtown).  Spoke to a friend of a friend there who is setting up a raptor rescue center at the Natural History Museum; also the California Condor group who are trying to figure out how to set up a live cam at the condor feeding station in the back country. They're thinking maybe solar power, but then there's the problem of relaying the signal, etc.  If that's successful, they may try one at the nesting sites, but the problem is that condors don't nest in trees - they like caves, so a logistical hurdle for further down the road. Not to mention the "permit" hurdles, which are major given that the condors are still highly endangered.  In addition to the usual solar, green, organic farms, foods and other community display booths there was the usual band and "green" gifts area. Didn't buy anything but did visit my friend with his spiffy electric car and bumped into another friend - a "Master Gardener" at another booth where we sat and chatted for an hour.

All quiet on the LG and LOTL nests right now; doesn't look windy or wet.

  • What is a polyosprey? A cross between an osprey and a parrot?

  • Morning all,

Caerann : Congratulations on your job offer. I hope everything goes well for you in your negotiations.

Annette : Sounds like you had a really nice meal.

Diane : Yet to check out the Spectacled bear. Is that one that WENT to Specsavers?

jsb : I have not had the problem that you had. I have 3 email addresses but only use one.

TerryM : Managed to avoid prison so far. Better watch what I say though.

There has been a lot of diesel thefts in the Cambridgeshire area. This always happens when fuel prices shoot up.

Having a quiet day today. LadyP is due back later so I had better tidy up a bit methinks.

No Irish ancestors that I am aware of. 100% Scottish and proud of it.

Weather is sunny but cold again. Latest temp 2.9c. Highs of 16c forecast.

  • Not sure if everybody is aware of this but Brighton peregrines have had live streaming with sound since 17th April:

  • Good Morning All,  Sunny but quite cool here this morning.

JSB, I have just learnt what a polyosprey is. Hope it works.

Caerann; I hope your negotiations are all  what that you want them to be and we hear you have accepted the job.

Annette; Unusual to hear you say that you have postponed a day out because of the weather but glad to hear you enjoyed your meal.

Hope you all enjoy today and some sunshine.

  • Just enjoyed reading overnight nest commentary and chat here.  I don’t often reply on the nest thread unless I have specific comment to make.  Terry – glad I’m not the only one not claiming Irish ancestry!  I too hadn’t heard of Cheshire Oatcakes – sound like pancakes made with oatmeal to me … just googled them – they are – (as opposed to Staffordshire oatcakes which include yeast).  Never met either despite stays in both those counties!  AQ – I know my father’s reticence about the past was due to his experiences in WW2 – to shut that out, he seemed to blank out the whole past (no post trauma counselling for the returning soldiers in those days – just get them into the workforce and leave them to it!)  Annette – will persevere with volcano cam “when I have time”.  No snacks intended today – lunch out at New Abbey Cottage Tea Room.  Four courses for dinner?  Some unusual items, but I would have chosen the same starter as you, missed out second course, and then enjoyed the sea-bass (preferably with Samphire!).  Plesaed you had a good evening after the previous one.  Diane – will spend time with Spectacled Bears later.  Remember a documentary here with Stephen Fry visiting Peru in search of “the real Paddington Bear”.  But people don’t need to suffer withdrawal from Lily and Hope – the Dencam site has almost daily updates, and in the dropdown at the top, there is a link to lovely videos as Lily takes Hope exploring their territory.  I hope the storms were not too devastating last night.  Caerann – so pleased about the job offer – hope you conclude a good deal with your negotiations.  Jsb – Polyosprey news interesting – so long as this just creates room for the increasing number of Ospreys to spread – don’t want them enticing our birds south!  They mention food availability, but I would have said the primary consideration for a good Osprey is the longer day length – and then, if we do take food into consideration, our wonderfully stocked fish farms!!!  Alan - I saved the Brighton Peregrines in favourites when you mentioned them some time ago, so was surprised when someone rediscovered them this week.

Good night, Annette. I'm going to have to shut down my computer soon. Storms moving in. They had 35+ tornadoes in the midsection of the country. Probably won't be that bad here. Lots of rain, though. Hope everyone has a good day.

Diane hope you are safe andnot tornadoes in your area.

The spectacled bear cubs are awake and full of energy tonight. They are climbing all over their mother, who is trying to sleep. http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/Amazonia/default.cfm?cam=ABC

    Also:

The female owl at BOT is beginning to scrape the floor with her feet in preparation for laying her eggs. She's also breaking up pellets with her beak as cushion, so egg-laying may happen tonight. The average date for a first egg at that nest is April 17, so she is late this year. I just saw the male bring her a big rodent, and then mate with her. He nuzzled her with his beak and cuddled a bit before leaving to hunt again. They are so lovely with each other. Last year, she had quite a hard labor with her first egg (I watched).  http://www.thewebbroadcastingcorporation.com/barnowlcam_nestcam.html :-)

Diane thanks for the link to the bears, just had a look and one is fast asleep at the moment.

The barn owls are quite laying eggs this year, wondering whether all that cold weather we had has anything to do with.

  • Good morning original goldfinch.  I still log into the Hope and Lily site.  So good as it is updated daily and the video and photos are just gorgeous.  So enjoyed the den cam and hopefully they will be able to set one up again next year.  Hope is growing so fast and I love to watch her playing with Lily and wht an adorable face Hope has.

    Have a good day..

  • Caerann - Fingers and toes crossed for good news on your new job. Will they make you wait until next week?

Cool weather coming again (yesterday was 30 C <sigh>). I went down to local shop for chish & fips this eve and had trouble remembering where were the windscreen wipers thingie. We had some light rain. Oh miracle.
