Hi all: Don't forget to check last few comments of last week's chat and a lovely photo from OG - of Loch Garten I assume. Alan: Wonderful close up of EJ on the last Daily Update. Thanks to everyone else for all the news from far and wide.
Just in from Earth Day event, which had a lot more transportation (electric/natural gas, etc) options on display this year, including bikes of all shapes and sizes (SB is a big bike town with lots of bike paths, even throughout downtown). Spoke to a friend of a friend there who is setting up a raptor rescue center at the Natural History Museum; also the California Condor group who are trying to figure out how to set up a live cam at the condor feeding station in the back country. They're thinking maybe solar power, but then there's the problem of relaying the signal, etc. If that's successful, they may try one at the nesting sites, but the problem is that condors don't nest in trees - they like caves, so a logistical hurdle for further down the road. Not to mention the "permit" hurdles, which are major given that the condors are still highly endangered. In addition to the usual solar, green, organic farms, foods and other community display booths there was the usual band and "green" gifts area. Didn't buy anything but did visit my friend with his spiffy electric car and bumped into another friend - a "Master Gardener" at another booth where we sat and chatted for an hour.
All quiet on the LG and LOTL nests right now; doesn't look windy or wet.
Couldn't help noticing connection - is "jsb" really "Joe (Something) Bloggs"!
Being serious for a moment - I remember in the very early days of emails there were directories where people could search, but they seemed to disappear some long time ago - and quite right too, I would say. Don't have any experience of this - just acres of spam which I still have to search through because some "real" messages end up in the spam box!
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Annette The 1911 census records for Ireland are now online. You should be able to find your family as I have managed to find mine. See http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

Annette and OG: Many thanks. I used to be plain old "jb", but I changed it, funnily enough some people used to call me Sandy, but I don't know why. I don't get much spam at all, because I use about nine email addresses, the general mail one is like, mailbox007@etc.etc, or for house bills and the like, say, it could be piggybank@etc.etc, which has been working fine. Also changing ISP is a good way of purging the spam effect, my domain with the previous ISP is now deleted.

Tiger - thanks for the Irish census link. I love browsing archives - my family were all Irish, and while a relative of mine has researched my paternal grandmother back to the 1600s, its still nice to see the records myself. When I looked, I discovered a mistake in transcription which I have reported! I enjoyed reading your report of your osprey trip.
Annette - my grandmother was born in county Cork ... Bandon to be exact, and then moved to Clonakilty!
Joan - avid bird and nature watcher in Northumberland!

I have changed my avatar to one of the crow family that feeds on the fat balls. DIBNLIB when you come out of Vane going towards the motorway if you turn right going to Kinross pass thro' Kinross you will come to sign for Glenrothes and I also think that it has sign for the larder as well. There is also a new school at the turning you want. I think it is the A911 but if you put Milnathort Loch Leven Larder it will come up on Google maps. Hope this will help you find it.

Hey! Has everyone got Irish roots?
Annette Your mother was born in Cork in the year my father was born in Belfast. You really should look up the census links - they include information about the type of domicile. On my mother's side, her grandfather came to Belfast from Co Down to manage to horse side of the Belfast Corporation Tramways. The family lived in a house attached to the tramway depot - it was still standing when I was a child but I never saw the inside of it. Interesting to learn more about it from the census records. Good luck with your researches.
jsb - The only time that a similar thing has happened to me is when one of my email contacts has another contact with the same first name as me and has quickly clicked without checking the proper email address. I don't think that this is what has happened to you, but thought that I would mention it.
Have had a nice 'afternoon off'. Went to a little cafe where we were somewhat spoilt as not many customers today: friend and I had Staffordshire Oatcakes warmed and stuffed with cheese, ham and tomatoes with a nice side salad. My friend had not had an oatcake before, so asked to see one before ordering - they are rather like a wholemeal pancake in a way, and delicious eaten with either sweet or savoury filling, rolled over like a pancake or an omelette, and filled. Afterwards went into the shop next door which specialises in artificial flowers of every kind, plus rooms and rooms full of 'knick knacks' and small furnishings. Lots of 'Ooohs' and 'Aaaahs', and 'that would look nice in your bedroom' remarks. Friend came away with small photo frame, I bought a birthday card. Then we went the long way home as it runs through several small pretty Cheshire villages, all of which have displays of daffodils and tree blossoms - lovely, especially as today is really sunny and bright. We feel that Winter is over now, if not for the poor Ospreys further North.
AQ: Just love the name 'brumbies' too - wonder where that expression comes from?
Diane: Thanks for keeping us up to date with the peregrines: as well as Margobird, I love Birds of Prey, too.
Tiger: Your Welsh adventures sound just great, what a wonderful time you had: and a new word for all of us "philopatry" - I've had to write it down.
jsb: Havn't had any strange emails, but a couple of weeks ago I had some very strange phone calls from men who said they were going to help me with "the problems you're having with your computer" so I said no politely and hung up.
Nice to see on the News all those poor souls finally returning home after their extended holidays/journeys abroad. Lots of tales to tell no doubt. Am getting used to grabbing the remote when the politicians come on TV, saying all the same old things and kissing babies (ugh!). Glad when its all over.

Has anyone ever had an email addressed to them correctly, but intended for someone else with the same name?...The company must have searched somewhere and got my friend's email address by mistake. My friend is not aware that he has made his email address available on any public database. Anyone experienced anything similar?...

JSB: It could have been a clerical error. Someone typed JBloggs321 instead of JBloggs322. But, unfortunately, email addresses are still available all over the web -- from "people search" directories, from search engines, and especially from social networking sites. Many people forget when they leave email addresses visible on LinkedIn and other career sites, so they won't miss job opportunities or for career networking, etc. Also, on sites like Facebook, many people don't understand how to use the privacy settings (which are convoluted, in my opinion) and the contact info is visible when it shouldn't be.
And, also unfortunately, you don't always have to give permission or make your email available yourself. Most of the large search engine/free email sites still maintain vast email directories, such as yahoo ( http://people.yahoo.com ). These days, though, owners of these big directories often charge a small fee for the information, rather than making it available for free. Just put "email search" into Google and look at the results. Many internet sites retain the right to compile and use your email information, and you have to go to great lengths to protect your own privacy. Anyway, this is just what occurred to me when I read your post.
Yes, for years I was getting emails intended for my namesake in USA, who had an account with the same ISP as me. They allowed her the same email address as me, but all lower case, while mine went back to when email addresses were case sensitive, and I have caps in my address. This was one instance where the mighty USA didn't win, and she had to change her address slightly.
Smiles, Jan.
