Hallo all:

Soosin posted the following about her Saturday and various bird sightings, etc.,  at the very end of the last Daily Update, so I'm copying it here otherwise no-one will see them (she saw mating kingfishers!). And Alan posted some new links, which are also here (Hope that was okay Soosin and Alan).

From Soosin: Just in from a day in Galloway visiting rellies.  What weather, fantastic,  Saw mating kingfishers at Cumstoun Bridge, Kirkcudbright. and an Osprey on tje nest at Threave Castle our first house martins of the year and possible first swallow but in car and couldn't be sure.  Spring definitely here. whooopeee  Great to catch up with all your obs and pics from throughout day. So, they still seem to be sharing, aahh, how nice. Empty nest looking well padded with moss with  the night vision on it.  Someone mentioned a new blog.  off to read that now. Be out all day again tomorrow. on the hill hoping for Ring Ousel

From Alan: Nesting calendars for Owls and Hawks, International falcons and US falcons have been updated. http://peregrinefalcon-bcaw.net/viewforum.php?f=6

New Forest Goshawks have at least 2 eggs now. http://www.newforestgateway.org/Wildcam/LiveCameras/tabid/117/Default.aspx

jsb: Thanks for the link to to Capercaille call - was it you who said it wasn't one you could whistle to?  Right!

  • Lindybird: Congrats on the anniversary. Ours is next week (does anyone else keep typing "nest" for "next"? Happens every time to me.)  Sounds like a nice dinner - I'm an Apple Crumble person myself - warmed up with vanilla ice cream please.  Glad dog is better.

dibnlib: Very cute squirrels - but oh my, what big toes they have!  Wattle: Three babies??  Must check that out.

Diane: I read about the "prolonged sonic boom" - had no idea it was that prolonged; sounds more like a series of them. Pretty impressive and we've seen the videos. Thanks for all the links.  Haven't seen V, but I heard that we know any aliens out there are intelligent because they haven't contacted us!  (Well, anyone watching television news for a night or two would run a mile).

    Great news about the egg.

  • Watching BBC World News on our local PBS station tonight - not usually on at this time. Had no idea this was the first televised debate of its kind between UK party candidates.  A lady is commenting at this point on the fact that no representatives for Wales and Scotland present.  Hmmm.  And lots of talk about EU immigration vs. non-EU immigration.  On radio this afternoon our U.S. interviewer talked to someone at The Guardian who suggested that programs such as Britain's Got Talent and - Dancing with the Stars? - wouldn't have to worry about losing audience share.

Went to the Mission garden today - the start of a new season. I've had a bed of 35 white roses for three years so asked for something pink or peach for a change!  Got "Brigadoon" and "Love and Peace" - fragrant too!

  • Hi, Annette. So glad you got the roses you wanted. I looked them up, and they are both very lovely. Our old apple tree has burst into bloom in the last 3 days. It's now loaded down with fragrant apple blossoms. I hope it produces lots of fruit this year; the animals really love it, especially the deer, groundhogs, and birds. Our temperatures have been 20+ degrees above normal. Very hot here. Thunderstorms tomorrow. We will probably rock and roll.

I I had a long To-Do list today, including making copies of the tax forms and mailing them. Once again, I waited until the deadline. Every year I say that I'm not going to wait until the last minute and then I do. Anyway, because of my frantic errand running, phone calls, etc., I missed the egg laying. Maybe I'll see the next one. EJ looks peaceful on the nest.

Wanted to say welcome back to OG. Glad you had a nice trip. Sorry about your sinus infection, Barbara Jean. And sorry that your spouse is stuck in Canada, DjoanS. That must be distressing.

  • Ooooh Diane: 20 degrees F above normal - what does that bring you up to?  60?

  • LOL. No it was actually 84 F / 29 C here today!

  • Diane  We almost never get that high here and when we do it is unbearable.

Annette   Morning. Nice to see you on early morning (late night) patrol!

  • Hi TIger: Well, Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson, etc., is on telly and I can always watch Jane Austen.  It ends in another 30 minutes and then I'll be off to bed.  FYI, 84 here is a dry heat, so very tolerable compared to 84 with high humidity.

  • Hi, Tiger. Did you see the video of last night's huge fireball/meteor event here in the Midwest U.S.? I posted a link to it earlier today.

  • Diana. No I was not aware of it until now. I will scurry off and check it out now.
