Happy Easter all!

OK. So EJ and Odin safely at LG, but what has happened to the LOTL cam. Haven't been able to get anything. It looks like it's going to load okay, then you get just a black screen.  Let's hope they get it sorted soon. Margobird said they'd had horrible weather there yesterday, so maybe that knocked out something.

Well, I missed Odin's arrival but thanks to BigRab, there's a video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4EoYaRO6js which I plan to watch myself in a minute.

Busy day here, also amazed to see Trucker cam is now in Albuquerque - boy! does that guy ever cover ground. So I really have to follow him tomorrow (along with you-know-who) because I've driven that road and just love the huge wide horizons. But it's also Easter, so a bit of family stuff going on. Bought some lovely strawberries from the farm down the road and then went to supermarket and bought some naughty cheese (fattening double cream French Brie), mushrooms stuffed with all kinds of yummy stuff and simply couldn't turn down Haagen Dazs's invite to try - "at special introduction price" - new Java Chip flavor with coffee and chocolate chips. Was at Costco earlier and got some great asparagus and Wild Alaska Halibut. So we had a nice dinner, but ice cream still unopened - for now.

  • It is busy round here too - as usual on the Easter holidays !

Had some time today to catch up on the happenings at osprey nests, thanks for all the updates.

When my family visitors have gone home and things quieten down a bit on the roads I will go to see the Bass ospreys, tho it will probably be the Whinlatter big screen rather than up the hill !

  • ooo :0  the Bass Osps - wonderful ChrisyB. My sister lives in Workington but has never seen the Ospreys  -  how sad is that.  Still, I suppose we can't all be raptor lovers. She does spoil her garden birds and red squirrels.

  • MARGOBIRD  glad the blue tits are using the nesting box at last. We gave up on ours after a few years of nothing. Think we had it up facing the wrong direction.

A nice day so apart from a visit to the vet we did some more fence painting and have a landscape gardener in at the mo digging out a new rockery which we will plant up when the donkey work is done. Gardener has the most adorable 15 week old Scottie with him and he is so well behaved. He just sits by his Dad or rolls in the newly dug patches. It is open plan at the front (though not much traffic) but as far as Dad is concerned there is no need to worry. It is me who is getting all worried, not to say embarrassed  as Dillon is no where nearas well behaved as this pup!!!1

  • Yes Cirrus, my brother lives locally and is not at all interested. Bass is about 25 miles from me though the roads get busy in summer. Should be better from Workington! Still, if everyone was keen we would not be able to get near the sites ourselves! The car parks fill up as it is.

  • Good Morning Day!

DibnLib:  when you get done with your yard I could use some help with ours!   =O)

Alan: What a grand experience at Rutland! I wish we had nesting Osprey in this area to observe in the wild but I've never heard of any.

Cirrus:   I looked in on Belle and her eaglet very late last night and managed to see him pop up in all his cuteness. Looks like they're doing well so that's the main thing.

Okay, off I go again!     =O)

  • Awww how lovely  But not necessarily for pigeons.

Appio's and Vergine chicks in Rome.

I thought folks may be interested in 2 photos I took of the osprey nests when visiting Loch of the Lowes and Loch Garten in 2008.

Loch Garten's shows the nest in the centre and the camera on the right.

Loch of the Lowes' shows how the nest is more sheltered among the trees. Female on left, with perching branch on right of nest

    Thanks for the photos.

In the LG one the camera to the right is the one they use once the chicks have fledged. It is movable and also has a windscreen wiper on it :)

The one we see for the first part of the season is within the trunk at the front of the nest. It is close to the chicks and is easily caught by carelessly aimed poo :(

At LotL the camera is positioned in the tree behind the nest. It is far enough away to not be caught by poo

I'm sure I can find a couple of photos where I can zoom right in on the cameras. If I can find them I'll post them.

  • Morning all:  Oh dear, what I'd give for just one month of electioneering. You haven't lived until you've survived a U.S. presidential election campaign - they go on for more than a year and cost an unconscionable amount of money. But don't get me started....   Housing prices in this area are beginning to creep up but still too many people unemployed nationally...it's going to take a while to get over that mess, but don't get me started on that either.

TIGER I did indeed see the ISS this morning!  Brilliantly clear sky as you noted and the ISS itself was very bright - quite a bit brighter than last time, probably because it was flying from SE to NW and therefore toward the rising sun. Didn't see the Space Shuttle though, even though I'm sure I was out there in time. Scanned the skies for it and even in the right direction, but nothing; then the ISS showed up and was so bright you couldn't really miss it.  Thank you!  :-)    Anyway, cat thought I'd got up early just to pet her - ha! - instead, had a little bowl of cereal and went back to bed.  Thanks also for update on Pale Male site.

Emma: If you're on this page at all, love your new avatar!  Saw it on the Daily Update.

Alan: Good to hear you so thrilled about the live osprey viewing.

Patriciat: I walk through a small neighborhood park often and there's a group of people there who seem to work with their dogs but also hang out together. There's an informal gathering place with plastic chairs, water bowls and bottles, and poop bags. They seem to be there every evening; it always seems very friendly and relaxed.

diblinb: We are about to hire a landscape crew to replace our garden wall, which is the ugliest pink cinder block creation but, more importantly, has serious cracks and is leaning  (thank heaven - I had one just like it at my previous house and immediately planted creeping fig - should be called racing fig - which covered it very quickly but after 15 years became a sort of Frankenstein). Anyway, we're putting up a nice fence and then we have to plant the entire lot because we mulched the lawn last summer to kill the grass, which is way too thirsty for this climate. We'll replace with native shrubs.  It's a lovely springtime project.

Caerann: Good to hear you sounding so chirpy.

OK guys, off to start the day. Take care all.
