Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 1 March 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK AND HAPPY NEW MONTH!

Last week's Chat thread is HERE.

Thursday, March 5, is the Full Moon.

Also,

On March 6, NASA's Dawn spacecraft will arrive at the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The Dawn space probe will spend several months observing Ceres and sending back the first close-up images of a dwarf planet in our solar system. You can watch the spacecraft's arrival at Ceres on a special broadcast of the Slooh Observatory:

U.K.: Friday 6 March at 6:00 p.m.
Eastern U.S.: 6 March at 1:00 p.m.
California: 6 March at 10:00 a.m.

Scientists have already detected mysterious bright spots on Ceres and are anxious to discover what they are. INFO

Everyone have a great week!

  • Sorry if I've missed anyone out - I've read & enjoyed all your posts! Goodnight!!

  • George, Thanks for confirming your holiday dates. We miss you, when we don't hear from you. Sounds as if you have some excellent meals arranged with your son. Hopefully you will have the warmer Spring temperatures that are forecast. If we don't hear from you before you leave, do have a fantastic time.

So glad your SiL has a hospital date at last and she doesn't get herself too worried before the op.

  • Linda, Good to hear your weather has improved. How unfortunate for your friend to have injured himself. I also love Italy and have been many times. The food is so good too :-))

  • OG - not very good but enthusiastic as I like expressing my faith through music. There are only two of us singing with 5 playing instruments, 2 flutes, guitar, keyboard, cello.

George - hope all goes well for your SiL. Enjoy your break at your son's , it looks like you will be well fed.

Clare - do hope you get fixed up soon re a job. Glad you managed to pick up a car. Saw Limpy's post yesterday and see he is enjoying his time still at Minsmere - still hope to visit in April when we are in Norfolk for a few days.

Lindy - hope the weather picks up for you, keep enjoying your break.

  • read on FB that Beatrice is on her way.  Tweet from the R.Dennis org.

  • Evening all:  About 9 whales today during my shift - well, exactly 9 but I saw only 5 of them. We were forced inside for almost an hour during a downpour (hurray!) and when we came out, while I was busy looking for whales approaching the point, other folks spotted four disappearing to the north (they'd passed while we were sheltering). Anyway, we were treated to a truly dramatic ocean today - pretty calm but colors ranged from dark gray and dark green to pale green and something approaching turquoise at one point, with great billowing high white clouds that were blacker than black over the hills; in short: real weather! :-)  Total whales for the day was 13. Came home and en route to Trader Joe's was treated to a rainbow.  Garden is very happy.

Clare: It does pay to wait for the "perfect" vehicle. We typically pass on our old cars (God knows we take good care of them) to one or other member of the family at a generous discount, but now daughter's car is proving more than a little uncomfortable for her back so we are scouring the ads for something either higher off the ground or with a power driver's seat with not too many miles. We tend to go for Hondas and Toyotas or, in this case, a Ford Ranger truck (smallish and economical) - all of which are very popular, but nothing too spiffy due to the fact that daughter spends so much time bumping around on dirt roads with all kinds of critters and/or their accoutrements in the vehicle. I swear you could organize an entire bale of hay from what's in her trunk (boot). Sigh. Our mechanic says that the repair business has been very slow the last few months while new car sales have grown steadily.  I'm assuming it's because the economy was so bad for so long that people put off buying new cars until now, which is why so many of the previously owned desirable vehicles are showing up with lots of miles on their odometers. Daughter is driving one of our cars to AZ on Wednesday; I'll be driving the other when I go next week, so poor OH will be stuck with her hay wagon for a week!  :-)

Lindybird: Hope the sunshine sticks around; watch out for all the marble and tiles.  My OH hasn't been to Italy either and keeps saying he wants to go but never actually commits to it. I was there a couple of times and yes, Como is spectacular (I remember going up a funicular with my daughter and drinking hot chocolate so thick you could almost chew it). Yum!

Lynette: You must have a pretty good voice if there are only two of you singing.  Thanks for the update on Beatrice.

    Have a good Tuesday everyone.

It feels wonderful to have my own transport - Limpy prefers bigger cars with lots of gadgetry, something I tend to not want as it means there are so many more things which can go wrong!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, to EE.

    Do have a lovely day.

  • Good Morning Everyone. A wet morning here. We have had heavy rain, hail and swirling winds.

Lynette, I think you are being modest about your singing. I can recall photographs of you also, when you were playing an instrument. (Sorry, I can't remember what instrument) I agree, music is a wonderful way to express your feelings.

Annette, Yea, your garden has had rain.
Your OH sounds a very patient man, not having the use of his own car for a week, while you are away enjoying yourself, and he will be looking after Peanut. LOL  When I think about it, my OH would do the same.

  • Happy birthday, Eagle Eye!
