Yes the male usually does hang around until all the chicks have gone and indeed that big old softy Henry used to come back to check that it was so.
However Eric at Loch of the Lowes used to take off and leave the chicks. In 2008 Orange VS brought a fish and ate it before the Nethy and Deshar and then left.
Also it is very late in the season and so Aran could be excused for thinking it is time to go.
In 2012 Black 80 at Threave stayed until 6 October I believe.
