WEEKLY CHAT (Non-osprey) SUNDAY,JANUARY 18. 2015

Hi all!

  • Lots of discussion on paying for assisted living care on the last few pages of last week'd thread.  I think the rules are fairly similar to those here.

Very sad state of affairs here: It's 6:45 on a Saturday and I'm already in my nightie....

    :-)

  • OMG! The 18th day of this year already!!

Annette - many thanks for starting us off again.

Here it is -2C outside - definitely time for the central heating -fortunately I took the opportunity earlier in the week of the fall in oil prices and got my oil tank filled up 19p per litre cheaper than 3 months ago! If it stays the same or falls again I will get another top up in April, whether I need it or not!!

  • LizLFW:  Great to see you. Yes, it'll soon be whale and osprey time again. Hope those oil prices stay low until April - you could always top up again before then if they look like they'll change. Stay warm.

  • Good Morning, All. White over today!! I got up in the night to find snow on the windows but could only see how much there was when it got light. There are a couple of inches in the garden and a white mist over the fields beyond. Very artistic! We await to see if it melts.......
  • Good morning, all. Thanks to Annette for starting our new week, and it’s good to see Liz back again.

White here too, Linda, but much less snow than yours, it’s really just a covering, but is still lying as temp is minus one degree. No plans to go anywhere today, even J, who spent most of yesterday in bed with a bad cold. Good weather to watch the garden birds, who are eating like there’s no tomorrow! We don’t get many white days here being almost at sea level, and I don’t suppose it will last long.

AQ – it was good to see your lovely Granddaughters’ photos; the two are so different, and obviously have different characters too. I was wondering how it will be when they are both moving about more!

Lynette – pleased to see you are recovering from that fall. Do take care, and remove all trip hazards; it really is worth doing a risk assessment of your own home.

OH took three boxes of assorted books (J’s and ours) to local church yesterday morning, ready for sale, and I reorganised some of the shelves. Still waiting to finish up Christmas chocs etc to see what dining room really looks like! He also had to do a small temporary repair on shed roof, but it looks like we shall need to buy a new shed this year. Did some family tree last evening, but mostly just entering data from Dad’s cousin, tracing wider family from previous generations, not our shared direct line. Also had to file paper notes re OH’s side, so no time for new research.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good Morning Everyone. We haven't any snow or frost this morning We had rain all night and we still have light rain. 3.8c now but looks as if it is going to be a very cold night for everyone, tonight. Weather man says -14c for N. Scotland.

Thank you Annette, for starting the week. I did laugh that you were in your nightie so early in the evening. I hope you had no surprise visitors :-))

Liz, That is a significant saving on your heating oil. I noticed that our local petrol price had been reduced again yesterday. £1.02 a litre for unleaded.

Lynette, So good to hear that you continue to recover from your fall. So good that you don't appear to have damaged your knee.

Linda, I did notice that you could get some overnight snow. Always lovely to look at but not so nice when it becomes icy or slushy.

OG, Sounds as if you have been rather drastic with your book clearance. Would you have a word with my OH please !!!

A quiet day for us, nothing planned.

  • Hello Everyone - A lot of snow and ice in our road, it has not had any gritting done, really treacherous out.    I live in a cul-de-sac of three houses and our road was flooded to a depth of about eighteen inches on Friday, it almost reached into my garage. it was due to the sudden thaw of snow, the culvert was not able to cope with it.  I have had my garage completely flooded right through before now, so this time was lucky.   My neighbours and I were able to get our cars up on to the road at the top before the water got too deep.    More snow since!!

Today I have just finished hosting a Cactus Club Committee meeting, (salmon sandwiches, chocolate cake and variety of biscuits).  We had to make up the syllabus for the whole year ahead,  now I have to finalise a few things and send it off to the co-ordinator in Edinburgh and she sends it to the printers.

Getting a bit fed up with the winter at the moment,  I am looking forward to the garden coming to life again,  At the moment I have a lovely Witch Hazel in flower but very little else, not many buds showing through.

Have enjoyed reading everyone's news and pictures, especially those lovely babies, AQ.       Hope all will keep warm and cosy in all this cold weather, -   Good TV tonight, at least I think so.

  • Yes, Rita - I'm looking forward to more of "Midwife" and "Last Tango in Halifax". Last night was so dire we watched a DVD. Sorry to hear you have had some flooding - hope it doesn't get any worse. At least you were able to have the meeting.
  • Our snow hardly thawed at all, as the sun couldn't get through the misty fog. We went out for a coffee mid morning, and as we drove home again it started snowing some more. Its stopped since, but of course now its all freezing again. It'll be dangerous on the roads.
  • What a worrying time for you, Rita. So glad you didn't have any flooding. We still have some time to go before winter ends though, I keep buying cut flowers to have in the house. They cheer me up. My sister- iL tells me that she has crocus in flower, but our's are still small green shoots.
