WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY, JANUARY 4, 2015

Yikes!  I remember writing 1950 for the first time on a paper at St. Theresa's!!  :-(

Happy New Week.

  • Margo - I just got back from doing errands, and was pleased to find your nice long post, especially as you have had good news from your Consultant. The sun came out here as I was in the town, I do hope it will spread north and get as far as Brenda, too. OG - Hope the boiler can be sorted, its not a good time to be having problems with the heating. I do feel much better today, I think it was a knock on effect of trying to carry on through the festivities whereas normally I might have rested more when I was feeling the worst.
  • I must be living in a rainbow!! The sun is still shining brightly and its raining at the same time :-D
  • Likewise, LINDA!

OH much better thank goodness. He has to be reminded to take meds and drink water,he doesn't like doing either.

Good to see you, MARGO! We are not so badly off here re GPs, it is just that it takes ages to get a routine appointment and when OH phoned at first he didn't say it was an emergency (actually I wouldn't have called it that, either!) The receptionist made a note of his call and the Duty Doctor who phoned us in the afternoon may be the equivalent of your doc who just deals with emergency calls. She was happy to discuss OHs condition with me over the phone. I don't know what the hospital system is like nowadays.  In my day when there were very few (sometimes only one) doctor on call at night in the hospital it was very common for the on call doc to listen to the nurse and prescribe over the phone and then it would be reviewed the next day when the place was fully staffed.

Dreadful things happening in France just now. I saw many cartoons online, today. I have opinions but hesitant to share them online.

OG- Glad your boiler is being sorted out. We have a service contract for that, also, but not for any other appliances.

  • Glad your OH is much better, Heather. I always have to take charge when my OH has any meds to take - he's hopeless at remembering! ( or is it just because he knows I'll remember for him.... !). I agree about the terrible situation in France. All we need to say is that our thoughts are with the unfortunate victims families.
  • Thanks Margo, your sunshine has finally arrived along the Channel. We had to go out and the roads were flooded, some just like rivers. A large lorry, travelling too fast through a flood, completely blinded my view, by causing a large wave to completely cover my car. It might have been funny for him but definitely not for me !!!

Heather, Pleased to hear that your OH is recovering.

OG, Good that your heating is being repaired for you. Something we all dread happening at this time of the year.

  • PS- I did once give prescribed medication to the wrong patient. It was night time, I was the only nurse on the ward ( yes, really, no auxiliaries just me)

I had never worked on that ward before, there were no identity bracelets in those days and lots of patients from the Western Isles had the same names.

I did the proper thing, phoned the Duty Doc and confessed my sins, that the wrong patient had received a sleeping pill and an anti inflammatory drug.

He thought for about two seconds, then said 'Well, Heather, she will have a good night's sleep and wake up with freely moving joints!'.

Thank goodness for today's identity bracelets etc. It could have been worse. At least, even in those far off days, giving scheduled (then called Dangerous Drugs) required two nurses to witness the dosage and patient identity.

I was so frightened and have never forgotten that occasion.

The doctor was absolutely right, BTW, no harm was done. If things had been different, his response would have been different.
  • Morning all:

Slow day planned here; a trip to Costco for a couple of things and to pick up holiday photos and C.D., which I'll send to g/daughter, and then to Best Buy to return a bright pink iPhone cover -  ugh!   It was the only one with a grippy case, but I found a better, much less glitzy one online, thank heaven, and cheaper too.

Margo: Good to hear you're doing so well; hope you haven't had to be on toilet duty during the rain.  Yes, weather here ridiculous, but cooler today. We're all hoping for more rain soon since we're still in a very serious drought.  If you do get a smart phone, there are a lot of YouTube videos out there to help, but I also found a book (My iPhone) at the library that's a help too. The online Users Guide is almost 200 hundred pages long!  Most of my friends with these phones barely use many of the options, which seems a bit of a waste, but some would be really helpful when I'm out and about and I'm trying to familiarize myself with them.

OG: Good luck with the water heater.

Lindybird: Good luck finding the pot of gold. :-)

Brenda: Enjoy the sunshine and watch out for those huge trucks.  I remember when I was growing up, walking down the streets in the rain and having cars and vans zooming by and splashing me when they hit a puddle.

Heather: A sleeping pill and an anti-inflammatory?  Works for me!  :-)

    Take care all.

  • Thanks for thinking of us - there was no waiting for boiler parts – he had them on his van – wonderful! Shopping time was good – quite enjoyed the drive as it was blue sky and sunshine all afternoon, Buzzards in the air, and later the Starlings going to roost in a huge murmuration. Being a sunny day, the extra day-length was very noticeable - spring is on the way! I also noticed another wee spring flower in the garden today: first crocuses were blooming at Christmas, although some of the summer perennials are still throwing up occasional blooms!

Margo – so pleased to read that the treatment is still suiting you so well!

Heather – pleased your OH’s antibiotics are helping. Sorry you have to keep an eye on the meds and water – so essential to “flush the system” with that kind of infection.

Everyone went quiet on here this afternoon – I hope all is well.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

Clare. I see on that the largest container ship has arrived in Folkestone. I don't know how it stays afloat.

Er.......I think you'll find it arrived in Felixstowe.  Limpy used to work for the shipping company's agent.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • In haste else I shall be late for nanny duty. Bushfires under control but now we are expecting heavy rain and . . . floods. It is much cooler (20C). DIANE, we often get news of New York, Washington, California on TV but the other eve they showed Indiana.
