THE LG OSPREY GABFEST for JANUARY, 2015

With this lovely video, I will say farewell to 2014 and welcome to 2015.  Also best wishes for a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous year for all our Forum and Gabfest friends as well as all our feathered friends, especially EJ and Odin and their 2015 family.

  • Interesting that an osprey has recently been  seen in New Jersey, USA, which touches the Atlantic coast well north of Ohio.  Don't know what the weather HAS been so far but next week daytime temps range from 50F to 25F, with night dropping as low as 15F.  32F is freezing.

I understand that an osprey has also been sighted at Gurnard's Head, UK.  Although in the southernmost part of England, it is still much further north than New Jersey.  In fact not finding Gurnards Head on my weather page, I looked for Land's End. There the temps range from 50F to 44F.

New Jersey or Gurnard's head, both pretty cold for an osprey I  would think.  Then there is the matter of daylight hours for catching food.  But now they have no family, only themselves to feed.  One really hefty catch might do the job well.

  • Gurnards Head is approximately 10 miles NNE of Lands End so you pretty much have the correct area.

Although Cornwall may be further north than New Jersey it is served by the gulf stream which keeps temperatures moderate as is with the case of most of UK or else we would be like the wild arctic.

NJ Ospreys were a bit worried about dropping temperatures this coming week but they remain moderate in Cornwall.

One wonders why they forget to migrate or leave it late.

No news at Dunedin but they are attempting to restore the cam this week.

  • also for each of the out-of-place osprey Is this a lone sighting? I gather they have not been tracked or sighted throughout the fall, so my question is: is this a late leaving OR an early arrival?

Keith said:  Gurnards Head is approximately 10 miles NNE of Lands End so you pretty much have the correct area. :) Yes Keith, I do believe Google Earth is fairly accurate.  You know I have no idea where Gurnard's Head is, so when I couldn't get a weather report for it I had to look it up on GE to get its general location. Once I had that I knew it was near Land' End, which I used for a weather report for the general location.

  • For the Dunedin cam do you use any special apps or programs or whatever. The ones suggested on my computer come with such dire warnings that I am afraid to try them.

  • Happy New Year to Everyone!  Thanks for the cards and pics and comments.

    Kind regards, Ann

  • JUNE - The Dunedin Cam is down at present.

Joanna has reported little change in the Kielder Birds UV in Western Sahara (Cintra Bay) and 7H near Azemmour.

AlanP has reported No Change with the Loch Garten Birds.

  • Keith, I know it is down now.  But that isn't what I asked you.  When it comes back up, and you are again able to watch it but I'm not, will you be using any special connections?

Is anyone else watching the Dunedin Florida nest.  If so what link do you use and any special apps or connections of any kind?

  • Hello Ann, Happy New Year to you.

  • This morning about 11:00 a.m. UK  time  I caught a glimpse of enough daylight to see this squirrel hugging the LG feeder.

  • Well now I'll try this again.  My last attempt just went into endless spin.  So I closed out and when I came in , found that I had to "sign in".  So I did and now all seems well. All this for this post of no particular interest. :)

Seems we have a calico cat at Ithica and with lovely greet eyes!  Reminds me of my beloved bright orange, white and grey calico Scarlett.
