NOVEMBER – Winter is setting in. With return to Standard Time the dark evenings are even longer. It will soon be dark by 6:00 p.m. here in southern Ohio. Many of our November days are just all-over grey, from grey skies to gray hills with leafless grey trees and grey atmosphere – just cold, damp and gloomy. Still too early to expect much, if any, snow. But on an occasional sunny day we might enjoy a heavy frost on lingering green leaves. And inside all is warm, colorful and cheery. All month (in my family, anyway) we are planning the Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving Day, a day set aside for giving thanks to God for all the blessings in our lives, is a national holiday and a major one for most of us.
Here at the Gabfest, we have the gloom of empty nests. But we also have the cheer of knowing that Millicent is settled in her warm winter home, while Breagha is enjoying his second winter not too far away. Our chat-room fires are kept burning brightly and our new TV/telly screen is always at the ready., so hopefully we can all keep our computers in working order and enjoy a little chit-chat, some music and maybe a bit of streetwalking. Special Events include the possibility of another Music Night with suggested Movie theme and a group streetwalk to some as yet mystery location.
So where is our Gabfest chat-room.? Have you ever wondered? Well of course, it is at some undisclosed cyberspace location in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, not too far from the Loch Garten nest, home of EJ and Odin.
Funny, June, I just checked in tonight and saw your post!
My commute home tonight was snowy but the accumulation is not bad - less than an inch. In contrast, south of Buffalo (about 1 1/2 hrs southwest of here) there is about 6 feet.
We are bracing for arctic temps again tmw and an increased snow accumulation, but not FEET of snow... :-/ I live in the north of Rochester near Lake Ontario and there is light snow, nothing like the eastern shore of the lake...
Time for sipping a good bottle of wine and getting dug in under mt covers until tmw when I have to go to work again! What is everyone else doing for winter comfort???

This isn't planned for winter comfort, but I enjoy cooking and I've been finding more time for it recently. Yesterday I made Leek soup, and before that chili, before that vegetable soup. I seem to be especially fond of soup recently. Also a pumpkin pie, but with canned pumpkin - not from the whole raw pumpkin. Most of each of these will go in the freezer. A pot of soup is far more than I can eat before I tire of it and/or it spoils.
As for winter comfort, I think I will stretch out in a hot bath filled with a lots of foamy, good-smelly stuff and just soak for a while. After which I will get into a warm flannel granny gown and snuggle up under a soft furry cover in cherry red with a good romance novel.
Glad all is well with you CC. 6 FEET of snow??? Aghh!! I have never in my entire life experienced that much snow, except in drifts, most likely drifts made by the snow plow, probably on parking lots/CAR PARKS.
Another of Carol's Birds emil
Good morning all Gabbers and everyone. June I really hope that you will not get too much more snow and Im glad you are keeping yourself warm and cosy! Nothing like soup in the winter! Leek soup sounds lovely, and I also make it with added potatoes!
Juner and CC and everyone on the otherside, hope you are alright with all the snow that we are hearing reports of, sounds like you are really being dumped on :( Very mild here for the time of year but very wet. Things are still flowering in the garden although it all looks like a boggy mess. All the bird seed i put out for the birds all turns to porrage and has to be thrown away.

Hi June, have you read any of the Diana Gabaldon ‘Outlander’ books? They cover the period from the Jacobite uprising in Scotland through to the American Revolution, but are essentially a love story (just don’t tell anyone I said this).!! I like a bit of historical fiction and this is how I managed to come across this series of books, which I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed so far. I just thought that with your liking for Scottish things, and you being American, these books might be of interest to you.

Good morning/afternoon Willow, Paul and Gabbers. It IS still late morning here. Will be back to chat later.
For now I finally found a bit of action at the "Sabal Palm Sanctuary"
More of the Tower poppies. A youtube video, with others on the side.

Three cubs were born last week at the Cincinnati Zoo. See them here with mama. www.youtube.com/watch
You don't like zoos?? I am very proud of our Cincinnati Zoo. Not only do all the animals get excellent care, but the Zoo does great work in protecting endangered species in the wild.
This particular video has great footage of elephants at the beginning and end.
OMG the cuteness factor is overwhelming - 3 lion cubs. TOO CUTE. Almost as cute as panda cubs.
South of Buffalo, NY has 7 - 10 feet now. It's an hour from Rochester, and the expressway has been closed for a couple days already. However, Rochester is only very cold, with a relatively light dusting of snow.
I am also making soups and stews against the cold. Leek soup sounds great - maybe that will be next. I made a black bean pumpkin soup, chicken stew, then a pulled pork shoulder in my slow cooker, and now I am thinking a butternut squash soup.
Of course, wine is de riguer. I am sipping some right now... and keeping the bird feeder full. :)
