WEEKLY CHAT (Non-Osprey topics) Sunday October 26, 2014

Hope you all enjoyed your extra hour in bed!

  • Yes, thank you.  Lovely to see you back and thank you for starting the new thread!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Erm.........what time is it??  LOL!!  Thanks, Annette!!

  • Hi, Lindy!  I forgot to mention that we visited Minsmere yesterday.  Limpy snapped a pair of beautiful little birds while he was at the Island Mere hide - when we got home we looked at our books and discovered that they were penduline tits, which were last seen at Minsmere in March 2010!  Needless to say he's very chuffed.

  • That's great, Clare! Hope we can see some pics... (or are they on the Community Pages?) :-)
  • Clare, Just looked at Limpy's photographs. Well done to Limpy on even spotting them.

  • A rather cloudy morning here, but do feel sorry for the folk in the Highlands, who have an amber warning for gales and over 100mm of rain.

Thanks for starting the week Annette. I did wake early but enjoyed snuggling down for the extra hour.

  • Now this is what I don't like about putting the hour back. It is already so dark.

  • Just calling in to say hello - sorry I don't seem to be making time to say much right now: busy and tired.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Sorry you're tired, OG - hope its temporary. It went dark here just after 4.30 this afternoon.....urgh. Now, I'm tired & it feels like midnight although its just after 10.30pm. You'll gather there is still no baby news!!
  • Hallo all: Just about back to normal after much laundry and ironing; not to mention have to sort out the garden. However, am going to post some pix of the NY trip.  The first morning my sister and I were there we went to the 9/11 Memorial, which includes the new One World Trade Center (dubbed tje Freedom Tower) and the underground memorial, which opened earlier this year and is the most touching and thoughtful tribute to any tragedy that I've seen.  Each and every person who died in the 9/11 attack is remembered here.  The most affecting parts were off limits to cameras - they included a room that contained all the personal items (drivers' licences', house keys, wallets, etc. recovered from the site) and a second room (In Memoriam) that was very moving: On all four wall were photos by 8x10 inches of everyone who died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and from the field in Pennsylvania where Flight 93 crashed.  In front of the photos were large table-top touch-screen monitors showing the same photos, and when you touched the photo and name of one of the victims, a very short bio appeared that included - and this was the most touching part - photos taken at their weddings, holiday gatherings with families, children, etc.  So moving.... Anyway, here is the Freedom Tower taken as we entered and when we left;  Also a link to the memorial's web site http://www.911memorial.org, plus some other photos of the memorial.

One of the two fountains - called Reflecting Absence - that occupy each footprint of the original World Trade Center towers, around which the names of the victims are engraved.

Someone had placed a rose in the receptacle by this lady's name...
