Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 19 October 2014

Welcome to the new week! I hope everyone has a great one!
  • Heather - I first saw nectaroscordum in Cumbria , in a garden open to the public, big clumps of them and I really liked them so I planted a few last year . Most of them came up and were very nice so I have planted some more, once they are settled I think they increase quite well.  I think I bought them at Howdens or Simpsons.

  • Thanks,RITA,I think that OH would like them very much also!

  • Now you've got me looking them up, too. Nectaroswhats its.... ;-). I seem to have two or three, never knew what they were called!!
  • Heather - sorry to hear that S is at such a low ebb, such a shame. My Uncle did the same thing with an address book - he treasured it as contacts from throughout his long life, but one day it disappeared and he was very upset for a long time. He decided it had fallen into a wastepaper bin & he must have thrown it away without noticing. When he died it was never found, so maybe he had indeed done as he said. It was impossible for us to inform some of his friends about his death because of what had happened!
  • Margo - well done on posting the delightful kitten pic!! Hope you can remember how you did that!! Billie is typical in that she doesn't like getting wet paws, I'm not surprised she wanted to stay indoors! We are getting daily visits now from at least 3 different cats, now they've learned there is no longer a dog here. (We've left up the "Beware of the Dog" sign on the back gate, but I guess cats can't read!!).
  • LINDY - Fortunately I have a list of all Sheana's (why not say her name, it will do no harm ) contacts but I can't replace her calendar/diary until 2015. I did think about making up a calendar for her in a notebook, but I have bought the same format of calendar for her for several years and I just know that she won't get to grips with an alternative:-((

  • Margo - lovely to hear that you are feeling a whole lot brighter and that you have treated yourself to new clothes etc.  Lovely pic of the kitten.

Going to get my ingredients at the weekend for Christmas cake and make it beginning of Nov - plenty of time to mature.

    Have a good weekend all.

  • I want some of those Nectaroscordum for my garden. I love bulbs. Except for Spring Stars (Tritelia) – they are threatening to take over everywhere. I have been treating them like weeds but it only encourages them LOL

In an Albany shop window I saw a very appropriate sign for travellers - “I never worry when I get lost . . . I just change where I want to go”. And then there was this one outside a cafe . . .

  • AQ: A good cup of coffee may not solve one's problems, but it can't make them worse. That's my motto. :-)

Margo: Glad you're feeling more positive.

    Hi, all.

Last night I heard something hit the side of my house. I wasn't too concerned. Lately, I've found some very large owl pellets on my deck -- they must be from a Great Horned Owl or a Barred Owl -- so I know it has been hunting in my yard.

I continued reading my book, and I began to smell something funky. I walked out on the enclosed porch and the smell became decidedly more unpleasant! I opened the front door, and the odor nearly knocked me over...S K U N K!

Apparently, the owl enjoyed skunk for dinner!

    Hope everyone is well.

  • LOL, Diane!  Either bird is fantastic to have hunting in your yard.......let's hope it goes after something less smelly next time.

I'm so glad we don't have skunks here.....their smell is legendary.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
