DAILY UPDATE (Loch Garten nest) Sunday, 24 August 2014

The only inspiration I have for starting the DU early is that... it's SUNDAY MORNING !!!

We've been left in glare mode:

...

...

Who will we see this morning?  Anyone?  Just one more glimpse of each of the three, please :'(

  • Oh, I do hope you are having a wonderful time LIMPY & CLARE.  Look out for black ringed birds flying south!  I think you chose a good time to take your holiday as you won't be missing anything, other than our beautiful ospreys!

Now, a question for all those lucky folk who have actually seen osprey 'in the wild' so to speak.  If osprey are on a mission, ie migrating, do they make a different noise/call to that which we hear whilst watching the cams.

We all know the usual contact calls, the intruders, skydance, the food soliciting.  However I was sitting here just after 09.00 when I heard an odd call, which sounded very different to any I have heard before from a large bird.  I looked up and saw what could have been a GBB Gull, but the sun wasn't helping, flying roughly W to E.  It can't have been high.  The call was definitely not gull-like and the stupid thought crossed my mind - was it an osprey?  Would an osprey be flying relatively low, and would it call in flight?  In my heart I think it was a gull, but there was this hopeful nagging thought!

  • Sheila, could it have been a Harrier?

  • "  Would an osprey be flying relatively low, and would it call in flight? "

Sheila there was report a few days ago of one in Sussex flying along a 'ride'in a wood below treetop height. It is an area where birds have been seen before, including blue 24, but never known to have nested. Equally they are often seen perched on posts in Chichester harbour when fishing on migration. As for calling I can't answer that I'm afraid but I've certainly never heard it unless close to a nest.

  • Well that's all folks:-(

I would like to think that on Friday night Millie was saying goodbye.

I was 6-10....she perched on the camera tree and stayed there as night drew in. Which was unusual as they had tracked her to normally roost 400 yards away.

As for my special Druie ... I missed her paddy in the afternoon with the fish she didn't like...

  • Oh NO! No birds coming Surely that means they are all gone Goodbye dear Druie Fare well in Africa(?) and please come back

Safe journey amazing Odin See you next year and stay safe Millicent and Ilook forward to following you for years

  • Wendy I know it has been said before but may I say again just how much your 'on the spot' reporting is, and has been, appreciated. Thank you.

  • I was house sitting for my daughter over the past week at Selsey only a few miles along the road from Chi. Sad to say I never saw anything remotely like an osprey. Plenty of gulls and turnstones to keep me amused on my daily visit to the beach only 400 yards from base. Never even saw the long tailed skua that had been in the area for about a week. Not and osp I know but a fairly rare sight I was informed. Wishing all of our birds a successful winter. Safe return for those coming back next spring while the younger set enjoy their summer hols in warm climates.

Just wondering.  We know breeding ospreys return to the same nest site year after year.  Is there any record of an offspring returning to its birthplace to breed?

  • Just been 'locked out'!  No box for comment and no 'like' to tick!

Many thanks MIKE for your comments and DEVERONSIDE for your suggestion.  I just have no idea really what it was.  I shall just put it down to a 'perhaps' in hope!  I can;t even find an example of the call.

What a lovely base for you RICH.

ENS, not even a dickie bird

  • Oh dear dipping in for my usual update on how things are going, and it all sounds dreadfully 'end of term'.  I do hope someone is still around.  At the risk of sounding like a closing post, can I just say how much I enjoy reading everyone's posts and looking at the marvellous pics and videos.  They're much appreciated by the more 'silent viewers' too.  Now let's hope someone turns up to keep us entertained for a little while longer, and eagerly awaiting news that Seasca has got over the Bay of Biscay!  Thank you all.
