This is a new thread to follow the travels of these three young ospreys from the Loch Garten nest.

Breagha

A male from the 2013 brood, hatched 28th May and fledged on 19th July. Breagha’s ring is Blue/white CF4.

The migrations of Breagha and Oighrig were previously followed in this thread. Contact was lost with Oighrig in January 2014, but Breagha has survived and is living in the tidal creeks of the Casamance river in southern Senegal.

  • Thankyou all for the updates on Breagh. Sue enjoy your holiday in Chinon and hope you see the little man! :) Will be fantastic if you see him! Long to see him back home! Safe journey little man. Will he be the first tracked youngster to return>

After reading about White 14 who is in Norway it could possibly that one or two LG chicks could possibly have gone there, not unheard of. Such exciting news about Breagh :)

  • Hi, I have just been to Whinlatter, and asked about 14 and was told the latest is he is back in the Czech Republic! Wish he would come home! But at least he is around and migrating so that's good.

  • Hello ChrisyB many thanks for that update! He cant seem to make up his mind where to go! As long as he stays safe and well thats all that matters. Very interesting journey though :)

  • Tracking has certainly shown where youngsters can turn up. 14 is certainly unique.

  • Thank you so much ChrisyB for your exciting/surprising (!?) news about Blue 14.  What an adventurous youngster he is, and certainly unique as far as I am concerned - others may know better of course.

  • Well I booked the holiday on the Loire, though it isn't till mid August; even if Breagha isn't there, it seems an interesting area. The itinerary is focused on chateaux and easy walking, but I've worked out how to get a bus out of Chinon, to walk through the Bocage du Veron where Breagha spends much of his time.

There is a factor which may encourage Breagha to stay around there; the Loire is an osprey nesting area. The recolonisation of mainland France started in the mid 1980's at the Etang du Ravoir in the Foret d'Orleans, France's equivalent to Loch Garten. This is about 100 miles upstream of Breagha's favoured location; however the pattern has been for nests to gradually spread down the river. I have found info that in 2011, there were two successful nests in Indre-et-Loire department, where Breagha is, and there may be more now.

This page from the website of the Parc Naturel Regional gives a link to a .pdf leaflet on ospreys, which depicts them as nesting birds.

I have been looking at Faune-Touraine which is the sightings database covering the area, but then noticed they have an embargo on reporting osprey sightings from mid May to mid July (because this is the period when there would be chicks in the nest?) This may be significant too.

  • Sue, Thank you for such a comprehensive account. Good luck with your trip and I'm sure we all look forward to a report afterwards.

  • Thank You Sue C and have a great trip.   Look forward to reading about it when you get home.

  • It looks as though you will have a lovely time exploring the Foret d'Orleans, SUE.  I wonder whether Breagha will decide to stay here for the remainder of the summer, or head north.  It's the closest any LG tagged bird has come to returning to the UK.  I find it so exciting!  Like others, I look forward to hearing about your trip in due course.
