AUGUST - the month for migrations, tracking and empty nests.
The above picture is of the early flights around the nest of ALL the osprey sat tagged at Loch Garten. Looks like a celebration, doesn't it?
Well if we are to have MIGRATIONS - TRACKING and EMPTY NESTS - I went up to Speyside for two days this week to say my good byes to Loch Garten and two other nests I like to look in at when up there. Plenty of Ospreys around these nests still - and saw two whilst playing golf at the Macdonald Spey Valley course.
Now switching my allegiance to Wales off tomorrow at first light with a visit to Dyfi Sunday and work in Pembroke all week.
May still get up to Speyside the following week as another week off.
Back in the last Gabfest Starling said: "June - Yes I know of cheesecloth although not something I use in cooking. I have never heard of using it on plants though. Have you used it before, does it work well?"
STARLING, No I have never used cheesecloth for this purpose or know of anyone who did. I don't know if once upon a time I read of using cheesecloth as a protection from birds or if I just thought it up all by myself. I just needed something and all I could think of was cheesecloth. It seemed simple and lightweight enough that I could manage and since it was already on hand, costfree - always nice:)
So far it seems to be working fine.
Keith, I'm glad you have some free time. Except for your Florida vacation, it seems that recently you have been going from one assignment into another with almost no break in between. ENJOY!
I see on the Dyfi thread that Deri has fledged. I have been looking in at the nest several times a day, but she was always just resting comfortably. How was I to know if it was pre-fledge or post-fledge?
Once she was stretched out so flat, and was so still for so long that I started to get worried. When she finally moved I could see it was two birds, not one.
Looks good June.
Hi
fish, I see you are off in your time machine again, back in the July Gabfest. :) Hope you can join us here in August soon.
June - Thank you for starting off the new month.
I have just done a quick search on google and have found that using cheesecloth to protect plants is quite common. It can even be used to protect vulnerable shrubs or trees from frost in the winter or sun in the summer. Google is a wonderful tool :)
