    Thank you for the welcomes.

Limpy - I've obviously missed your naming of the chicks (not sure why these gorgeous birds deserved such undignified names!) I always stick to numbers rather than pre-names (though Wotadin and Mofalot were exceptions).

Hiya birdsong! Nice to see you here again! I've not been around as much this year either, for a range of reasons, including the poor cam visibility and forum IT challenges.

I couldn't agree more about the undignified names! have stuck to Chick1, Chick2 and Little One! Somehow Wotadin and Moffalot had a bit more pzazz for me, like sir Wotadin and sir Moffalot, osprey knights of the round nest!!

I have studied these three chicks long and hard, their leg girth, their behaviour, their size and after careful consideration, I have concluded that I have no idea if they are boys or girls! I will just wait and see!

I do love the fact that contented, well fed chicks seem to genuinely get on with each other, as the current cuddling pair at the front shows!

  • Limpy is asking what is undignified about Ping Pong?  LOL!!!!!

Wotadin turned out to be a most apt name for that chick last year.

Does this mean I need to abandon the idea of naming next year's chicks after the Teletubbies?

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

Oh if only I could actually believe you are joking!

I am actually really looking forward to this year's naming of the chicks - wondering what theme they will pick for them this year - they've done local village schools, nearby lochs and hilltops, and Scots and Gaelic names...

  • It's bound to be something relevant to the area and/or the language.  I must confess I liked the names Tore and Bynack (2011).

I tend to go along with whatever nicknames appear around the time of hatching, though I usually refer to the youngest as Little One (you might have noticed!).  Anything which makes me laugh tends to guarantee I'll use that name.

  • Druie, Feshie, Tromie and Dulnain are all tributaries of the river Spey for example (as well as Nethy and the burn of Rothes, but they've already been used!)

  • Any of those would be all right, though heaven only knows how you pronounce 'Druie'!!  It's too bad you don't get the opportunity to study Scots Gaelic in schools around here.

  • EJ the Beautiful has the ultimately easy-to-pronounce name:

She certainly lives up to the Beautiful part:
