This is our third month of ospreys for 2014. The season is really flashing past.
Loch Garten has been quiet this year. Just two experienced birds getting on with raising three chicks.
Loch of the Lowes has had a disappointing time with a crow stealing one egg and the other two failing to hatch. Also there was great excitement when Blue XD made his return to Britain.
Glaslyn as usual was first to have a chick hatch quickly followed by two more. The Glaslyn pair are indeed a formidable pair of ospreys.
Dyfi continues to surprise as they have not only got the usual pair of ospreys but a spare female waiting in the wings in the form of Blue 24. However Blue 24 has now got to keep a certain distance from the nest.
There was great interest in whether the new Manton Bay pair would manage a second clutch of eggs. In the event they did didn't. However ospreys everywhere should take a trip to Manton Bay to take lessons in nest building. Are we seeing the start of a new dynasty in Manton Bay?
Lots of interest in Bassenthwaite and Kielder. Also the surprise news that there are not one but two nests at Esthwaite.
The other great news was the return of the two year old 8F a 2012 bird from Manton Bay.
An exciting month ahead.
Tiger Signature
This must be the week of strange happenings. There were three chicks hatched on the same day at Calgary Zoo.
Weird
Interesting TIGER but also amazing at how resilient the eggs can be
Yes Patily, shows that we worry far too much about them. Often needlessly.

With more bad news, this time from Bassenthwaite, the season is turning out to be a problematic one. So how have you felt about it so far?
How have I felt about the season so far? Mixed emotions. It is wonderful that so many young birds are returning, a few causing havoc of course! Absolutely brilliant season at LG with Odin returning early, no shenanigans involving Blue XD, three eggs, three chicks hatched and fish has been plentiful so no sibling rivalry and aggression shown. Dyfi has been spellbinding yet again. But somehow SAD is how I have felt. Rutland has been sad with the failure of 5R to return, but brightened with the final acceptance by Mrs 5R/Maya of Blue 28(10) until Blue 33(11) saw him off. Now that Maya and Blue 33 have bonded it bodes well for 2015. We had had sad news at Tweed Valley, but once more a strong female has laid claim to the nest. And now Bassenthwaite has reported that two of their chicks appear to have infections. Sad too of the non-viable eggs at LotL. But I will end on a happy note of three chicks being ringed today at Glaslyn - the first pair to get together, first eggs laid, first chicks hatched and now first chicks ringed.

The fledging window will open on 30 June.
TIGER - I think the season has been fine. If we did not have the events at RW and TV and other nests then we would not learn about behaviour. Luck plays a big part the chicks being of a very young age and we have a bad spell of weather does not help.
In an osprey season we have ups and downs - There are still many ospreys out there and many not attached to a nest so I still say Fair Season.

I do however think this pairing at Glaslyn is "Exceptional"
