Evening all and welcome to the new week. Diane is on sabbatical from the thread but may be lurking.
Horrible news here in Santa Barbara - another disturbed person with a gun.
HEATHER: I heard the sirens last night and logged onto the local emergency services website to see all the calls coming in from around the university. I told my husband something big was going on in Isla Vista, which is about 2 to 3 miles south of us. All over the local and national news tonight.....
Will be out most of tomorrow so will catch up Monday.
Take care everyone.
ANNETTE Thanks for starting us up.
Miserable morning here. Very surprised (and pleased) that Benson decided to brave the weather and come with me on the morning walk.
Good Morning ALL. Dry again this morning with some sunshine.
Thanks to ANNETTE for starting the week for us. The news this morning is still reporting on the Shootings and also another one in Belgium.
DIBNLIB, Glad to hear that Benson joined you for a walk this morning. Maybe he just likes to judge for himself what type of rain he is prepared to walk in :-))
When I first tried to post the above, I was told that I didn't have permission to access the thread. I had to sign out and then sign back in !!!!
Hello all
ANNETTE- as I listened last night I became aware of the happenings in SB. I heard the father of one of the victims crying out in his loss and anger and wondering when the gun laws would be changed. I'm not sure if the facts are correct, there is inevitably confusion in the initial aftermath of tragedies such as these but I heard that the guy had 4 semi automatic weapons, all purchased legitimately.
I have started the packing for Denmark, OH has escaped to the garden even though the weather is not great.
Quick look in before I zoom out the door
Heather: I saw that father on TV - heartbreaking and yes, the guns were bought legally. Well, it's a wonder you don't find them in cereal boxes here! Sad thing is, the kid's parents had called in mental health workers several times and most recently the cops (three times)coz they'd seen his posts on YouTube and he'd sounded suicidal. The cops went to visit him and reported he seemed fine...... The trouble is, some of these disturbed folks are quite adept at charming others. Still, don't get me started on gun laws. I think our National Rifle Association has a LOT of blood on its hands. How long will you be in Denmark?
Gotta go; take care all! :-)
ANNETTE- We fly from Aberdeen on Wednesday morning and return the following Tuesday.
We heard yesterday that OHs granddaughter aged 18 has been diagnosed with scoliosis. It is 65% so a bad curvature of her spine. Surgery the only option according to hospital. She is absolutely devastated, thinks she will become a freak. She and family are presently deciding on what to do.
We spent the afternoon in the garden. OH was cutting back some bushes and I have been planting the bedding plants in the large pots and wooden boxes.
Heather, Not good news for your OH's granddaughter, especially at 18. It is going to be so difficult for her, as at 18, when her adult life is just starting, her appearance, self esteem and quality of life are so important. I will remember her in my prayers.
Heather Sorry to read about OH's granddaughter.....I had a spinal op at 17 and I have never considered myself a freak. I know everybody is different but, for what its worth, may I suggest a few pointers
Ask for a second opinion
Ask a) how many times has the surgeon performed the procedure and b) the success rate
Ask if there are any other optional treatments
Is there a counsellor or similar that she can speak to about her fears?
What is the short term and long term prognosis?
Its not easy/its a difficult time.....but it shouldn't "ruin" her life. I had other problems as well as my spine but I went on to teach, against the odds and some people's expectations/had relationships.....and my surgery was in the '60s and things are so much more advanced now. I really hope this helps. GOOD LUCK
PATILY Well said and good advice.
HEATHER Have a great time in Denmark.
BRENDA Yes, Benson is a law to himself!!!!
Off for a swim and then work.
Good Morning ALL, Plenty of rain overnight. Dry at the moment but not forecast to last.
Patily, No better advice than first hand knowledge.
Dibnlib, I see you are working your bank holiday. Hope you enjoyed your swim beforehand.
Not sure what we will be doing today. Nothing arranged yet.
