Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 30 March 2014

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Welcome to all new and returning folks! Nice to see everyone!

Last week's chat thread is here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/placestovisit/lochgartenospreys/f/915/p/110807/847720.aspx#847720. The code for this week's thread is WC300314.

Past data would suggest that Odin will arrive this week. Of course, we know that his rival Blue XD is well on his way back.

Today, Sunday, is the New Moon. Today's moon is special for two reasons:  (1) It's the second New Moon in a month, which some folks call a Black Moon or a Blue Moon, and (2) this moon will produce a lunar eclipse on the night of April 14-15 when it becomes full. The lunar eclipse will be partial in the U.K. and total in the U.S.

I hope everyone has a great spring week!

(Sorry, since I changed computers, I can't make smart/posh links.)

  • Good morning, all.

I saw a video of the pollution in southern England. That must be horrific for the lungs. So sorry for all of you in that region.

Lindy: Your holiday photos are all LOVELY! Beautiful plants and flowers. That tower is very interesting. I hope you have a great time in Wales and that everything is fine there. I laughed at your stories from your holiday. A brilliant solution to the glasses dilemma. I can't remember the last time that I wore perfume. It's been years...

AQ: I hope you're feeling better and are kicking that cold. (Don't ever read the side effects list that comes with a prescription!) I loved that video for St. Michael's Mount forest. Fascinating!

Rita: I so admire your gardening ability.

    Limpy: Wonderful photos!

Margo: I'm glad that you had a great time at the show. Wonderful! I haven't been following the great dane dogs, but I did look in briefly and saw the new puppies. Very sweet.

Heather and Lindy: My brother has had two cataract operations in the last month (one for each eye). He had no problems at all, and the doctors were amazed that his eyes healed almost immediately. He was back at work the next day after each operation. Of course, he's only 52, but his eyes were really in bad shape from diabetes. I hope that makes you feel positive about your OHs' upcoming surgeries.

Heather: I hope Amy is recovering well. I loved your story about shouting so the neighbors could hear. I'm always talking to the hawk, or a snake, or the rabbit...I only hope that the neighbors are far enough away that they can't hear me! I hope your eldest daughter is healing well. I also hope your grandson's homework issues can be resolved. He's going through a hard time.

OG: I'm glad that the arrangements have now been made for Eagle-Eye's aunt's funeral. I hope Eagle-Eye has a safe journey, and all will be well for you while he's away.

Brenda: I hope the decorating is going well now.

George: Nice to "see" you. Hope they can cure Diesel's infection.

    Hello to Trish.

Annette: So glad to hear that you're seeing a lot of whales. That's wonderful. I feel so sorry for your friend. I know what it's like to be overwhelmed by family illness. Sorry you had to fight with the lavender. I have a battle with some pokeweed in my future. I also still have to find a way to cut down that v-shaped pine tree limb that's hanging on a vine over my driveway lane. I pulled it aside so I can get the car out, but I still haven't tried to cut it down.

Diane: I see you're in for more storms tonight; stay safe.

I'm okay, Annette. The mourning doves are singing their haunting little rain song this morning. It's echoing through the trees. The storms weren't bad, but we've had nearly 4 inches of rain over the last day or so. I so wish I could send you some of it! My creek flowed over the levee and out into the bottom land, but my house isn't in any danger. It's warm this morning. We had heavy flooding in the area last night. I stayed up all night to watch the creek. This newer computer had a chess game pre-installed (where you play against the computer). So I was teaching myself to play chess. I am laughably awful at it! My brain just doesn't think that way. LOL

The local authorities evacuated homes up the highway from me because the larger local creek (actually a river) is over flood stage. The town where I get groceries has serious flooding, and the National Weather Service said that the state parks (forests) down the road from me are both severely flooded. I was going to go to town today, but I'm not going to try it now. I'll just stay here and listen to the birds sing.

  • DIANE- You must have been very worried about the creek when you stayed up all night. Four inches of rain is something I have never experienced. The good thing is that your home is safe. Thank you for kind thoughts about my grandson. I get so frustrated because he is not stupid, he taught himself to read before he stated school at age 5. He is lazy, loveable but capable of telling lies to us about his school work and I am so so upset that he can't see his future or lack of it. Sorry, ranting again.GGRRRR!! It is hard to know if this is the result of broken home or not. I don't know if I have ever said on here that I was left a single parent with three children before marrying for the second time, so I do know the challenges that face middle daughter. (My OH is my third husband, second husband died when I was 47).

ANNETTE- Watch the hand/wrist!! Have you got a wrist support? Don't take any advice from me about trying to carry on as normal. OG will tell you, if you didn't already know (lol) that I ignored her eminently sensible advice when I had a foot injury and still regret it!

MARGO- How great that Joe delivered the goods again He is such a trouper. He must surely be ages with you and I?

Better stop now and see if this will post.

  • Heather Joe Brown will be 72 this May. Still doing 100 shows a year but it is obvious he still enjoys making music. One of the few from that era who did not drink or take drugs and is highly thought of in the music world both here and in the USA.

  •  Hello Everyone -  Pouring with rain again today and very dark, so no gardening again.  Went to the Doctor this morning to have a steroid injection in the knee after the x-rays showed moderate arthritis (which I knew anyway) so I do hope that the injection will help as it has been giving a lot of trouble,  especially when gardening.  At  moment I am trying to downsize some of my photos so that they will post, yesterday tried   to post but couldn't as they were too big, mostly over 4 MB, but I seem to be finding it difficult.   Any tips?

Have spent a lot of the morning looking in at the osprey nests, do hope some the late ones will turn up soon, poor Mrs. 5R has been waiting so long, I feel quite sorry for her!   and we could do with seeing Monty and Glessni  back safe and sound.

Diane -  I have been reading all your news - poor you, first all that snow and now the floods, hope you stay safe.

Lindybird - Hope you are enjoying your visit to the caravan though a pity about the weather.   I loved your holiday stories and pictures.

Margo - So glad that you enjoyed the concert.  Hope all the air pollution down your way is clearing up now.

Brenda - Hope the Decorating is coming along well, it will all be worth it in the end!

Limpy - did enjoy your trip to Minsmere!

Must go now and get on with some jobs, have done absolutely nothing today!  to everybody  I've mentioned and also those I haven't enjoy the rest of the day and hope you have not got the awful weather I have.

  • LIMPY- somehow I missed your post leading into your Minsmere visit, just clicked on it and enjoyed it so much! Thank you.

  • RITA- I hope that your steroid injection will help. Was the injection painful?

Yes, weather here in the north not bonny, I went over to town this morning to do banking etc as OH not well. Rainy and not too many shoppers around.

  • Heather - No, my steroid injection was not painful as my Doctor gave me a painkilling injection first.  it will not take effect for about four or five days and then should last for three months minimum or maybe longer,    So I really hope it helps because it has been difficult walking with Amber apart from anything else and I also want to drive down to see my Daughter in Shap sometime.  Nasty weather here at the moment, I had thought of having a trip down to Loch Garten but will have to wait until it is nicer.   Hope your OG will feel better soon.

  • Hello! Another Friday already, and the end of the spring term in these parts, so we have J at home for two weeks. We went to the gathering last evening which was quite pleasant, but I got very tired from meeting new people and making an effort socially, so we aren’t going to the ceilidh tonight. The phone seems to have been ringing all day. Positives from that are that the tree surgeon has been today and reshaped our trees (very pleased with the Willow, but we shall postpone a verdict on the Alder until we see how it grows) and the bed delivery is going to try again this Sunday.

Limpy – I enjoyed your sequence of photos telling the story of your day, but I hope it didn’t wear you out and make your legs painful today!

Annette – sorry about the wrist – do take care and rest it as instructed.

Linda – I hope the site owners will get WiFi there improved before the summer season; sorry about the rain. I know you aren’t staying long this time, so I hope you will get a dry day tomorrow.

Heather – sorry about the worry Grandson is causing with the homework issue; I would have thought school Guidance department would have come up with some positive help for him by now. I hope the school holiday contact with their father will not cause further disturbance. Sorry about OH’s virus – and S’s knickers.

Margo – pleased the show was so enjoyable for you both.

Diane – good to see long posts from you; sorry about all the rain: take care while the creek is so high.

Rita – I hope you didn’t do too much this afternoon: you are supposed to rest after those knee injections! We also had the drizzly and misty weather today, with a really thick mist early afternoon.

Now going to make a few recently-found entries in the family tree.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • RITA - I use a site called Pic Resize which is great - just ignore the advertising banner at the top, and follow the instructions. You can also crop your pics on there, & do special effects.
