Many of you may remember Carl Sagan's popular Cosmos television series. The program is returning, hosted by handsome and charming nerd scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and it promises to be astounding! The new show, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,  will explore the wonders of the universe using cutting edge technology, advanced animation, and new modes of storytelling.

The new Cosmos is expensive and wildly ambitious. It will be broadcast in 170 countries and in 45 languages, the largest global opening for a television series ever.

In the U.K.: The show premieres next Sunday (16 March) at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast by U.K. National Geographic Channel

In the U.S.: The show premieres this Sunday (9 March) at 9:00 p.m. and will be simulcast on the National Geographic Channels and the Fox network channels.

In Australia: The show premieres next Sunday (16 March) at 7:30 p.m. on Australia National Geographic Channel

I couldn't find the information for France. Sorry!

You can get more background information in this article. I highly recommend this series.

  • Good morning. I returned yester eve. Slept in this morn & just returned from church. Now to catch up on last few days' posts. Report & pics sometime!

  • Hi, all. I was out of town for much of the week, so I'm not going to try go back and do in-depth replies.

The five very loving but neurotic dogs wore me out. I couldn't sleep because they were crowding me in bed. LOL They were running in and out all day long starting at dawn, with frequent indoor bouts of frantic and deafening barking. Apparently, they are convinced that the mail man is a terrorist threat. The cat (who was feral and remains as wild as any tiger, even though she is indoors) was dangerously cranky, so I gave her lots of space.

I do very much hope that Margo and NiteOwl are feeling better and improving!

    Welcome back, AQ!

Steve J, I loved the crane photos!

Limpy, your photo was lovely. I look forward to more pics from the marathon photography day that you and Clare enjoyed!

Annette: The Slooh Observatory and the Virtual Telescope Project are going to show a near-Earth pass of an asteroid Sunday night online. Hope your organization is continuing to see lots of whales. My friends saw a whale when they were in Mexico last week.

  • One bit of personal news from me: Yesterday, I took an ax and a shovel and cleared much of the remaining hardened ice-snow from my driveway lane. It was almost dark when I walked back up the lane toward the house. I heard a loud, low screech. R.T. Hawk had been roosting in his pine tree. He flew up and over me, making eye contact, before landing back on his perch. I was so glad to see that he made it through the harsh winter and appears to be in very good health! I was standing right beneath him, and I'd forgotten how big he is!

I can't tell you how pleased I am about this!  What a tough guy he must be.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Good Morning ALL. Another beautiful sunny morning. Already 11c in the shade.

Diane, Sorry you are so tired after your trip. I guess the dogs must be allowed to sleep on your friends' bed.

So pleased to hear about RTH. It sounds as if he was very pleased to see you, too.

Good to see you back, AQ.

  • I enjoyed your report and photographs of your day at Minsmere, Clare. Good captures of the otter and the bittern. Great spots.

  • LIMPY   love the pic, thank you;

DIANE   So very pleased that RT Hawk is still around.

Love Crufts on Friday, but looking forward to gundogs and the winner today even more. The hi light for me on Friday was Wylie winning the Scruffs prize. The poor boy had been so abused in Afghganistan and yet still seems to accept that the majority of people are good to animals. Thank goodness he has a loving home in the UK now.

  • Lots of internet trouble since Friday; they're coming tomorrow morning to sort it out, but things intermittent right now. Will catch up later.

  • We have been out to the Dairy at Daviot for a carvery lunch. We only had a starter and main (the pate was delicious) so we came home with coconut and cherry ie cream from Black Isle Dairy. If it is as good as their more unusual gingerbread and fig (2 different flavours) then it will be yummy. We are slowly working our way through the flavours which include such things as jaffa cake and chocolate brownie. OH is now sitting down to watch the rugby while I settle down to a jigsaw.

  • England won the triple crown, so I have a very happ OH
