Osprey Chat Thread for March 2014

Continued from Osprey Chat Thread February 2014

So the great day has arrived, the day when the ospreys are so close that we can smell them. Last year Beatrice  the Roy Dennis tracked osprey moved on 26 February. Well  Beatrice must have decided that she wants a little longer holiday this year as she has not started her migration as of yesterday. See update from Roy Dennis.

Of course the main interest here by far is EJ. since we do not know if she winters in Africa or Spain it is hard to judge if she is already on her way. My own view is that she winters in Africa and that she may well be slogging through the Sahara right now.  Here are her return dates.

The question is, is EJ looking forward to seeing Odin again or is she still harbouring feelings for that old rogue Blue XD?  On past experience I would say the latter. Of course the other question is whether we get to know about Blue XD's migration? So far there is silence on that matter.

Well sometime in the next 30 days or so we get an answer to that one.

The other rivetting question is whether Lady at Loch of the Lowes will return? My view is that she probably will.

Then there is Glaslyn. The birds at Glaslyn are traditionally fast off the starting blocks and hold the UK record for the earliest egg laid.

Not to be forgotten is 3 (97) at Rutland. What an amazing bird? He was first back last year on possibly 16 March. Will he be equally early this year.

Then who can forget White YA that old rascal who gave us such nightmares last year and put Blagdon Lake on the map. I think everyone will  be hoping that he does not repeat his performance of 2013 and gets back to Kielder safely. Of course when talking of Bladon Lake there is ochre ZT. Will we see this beautiful osprey again. I certainly hope so.

Then there is Dyfi. With a new observatory to enjoy everyone is hoping for another riveting season.

The one thing we will know by the end of  March is Carron. Paul Wildlifewriter has kept us gripped with the migration of Carron. Now he knows the outcome but is only letting us know at a rate of one episode per week, just like in the days of  The Hornet, Hotspur and Bunty. I tried asking him for a spoiler but the answer was a firm  NO

Each year I keep thinking that each season is not likely to be more exciting than the last. Each year  ospreys prove me wrong.

So ENJOY

I'm sure this excellent trend will continue!  It's very good for us to follow a species which keeps us all on our collective toes.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Hot news from the Gambia. The osprey are slowly disappearing. Where are they going?   North I presume.

  • TIGER - A great intro to the start of the osprey month and I am sure I will enjoy as much as you do.

Unfortuantely I will be going the other way to Equatorial Africa when most of the birds return.

Some of the birds you have listed and others that attract an intesest are getting on in age and am not sure if all will return - we will have to wait and see and if they do not they have served the osprey world well.

I am sure you are correct there but  I think we do not start admitting that until 1st May.

  • Brilliant intro Tiger - thanks.  As well as hearing about Blue XD, I hope we hear something about Green J too.  I am really hoping Green J gets back early so EJ stays at LG :-)

  • In his intro Tiger said:  The one thing we will know by the end of  March is Carron. Paul Wildlifewriter has kept us gripped with the migration of Carron. Now he knows the outcome but is only letting us know at a rate of one episode per week,

Actually, we do know the outcome.  The author already told us in the very first sentence.

You are absolutely right. Shows that I did not read it as carefully as I should.

Mind you that makes it a bit like those films where you already know the outcome, such as "All The President's Men" or "Apollo 13".

  • Somehow I missed it the first time too, Tiger. Only in starting to read it a second time all the way through to date, did I really pick up on that first sentence.

But it is in my mind now, whether I want it to be or not. Still we have the weekly cliff hangers to keep us in suspense.

  • How do we go back and read the previous chapters?  I'm getting Chapter 6 on every link.

  • I can't easily check Clare as I'm away and only on a silly little mobile, but I think there was a thread on the forsm. Otherwise google Paul wildlife writer and i think you'll find it. Oh how I wish I had my laptop!
