Weekly Chat, Sunday, March 21, 2010

Will EJ return this week?  What if another female tries to claim the nest?  Will super-Odin return to fish another year? Or will EJ take another mate (she'd better not!!)  Will YOU be the lucky blogger to catch the first glimpse of an osprey at LG?  Tune in to the Loch Garten LIVE webcam for the first installment of Loch Garten Ospreys - 2010!!

Seriously, lots of interesting chat on the last page or two of the previous week's chatter.  Catch up now because you won't have time once the ospreys are back in town!  :-)

  • Please send your dreich weather Downunder. Yesterday 34 C, today expecting 32 C. I am so sick of the summer. And we desperately need rain. Himself is out this morn watering. The promised "morning shower" must have been somewhere else. (Probably in a bathroom LOL.) It is no use me looking at web cams at this hour, everything is tucked up in darkness. I shall have to change my habits to later in (our) day

OG - Great pic of goldfinches (days ago !!!). I look at the clothes the young ones wear and think how scruffy they look. It probably costs a fortune for clothes like that!

Annette - Moderate exercise. Huh? Is that clicking on the mouse? And above-moderate is using the keyboard?

Ginnie - Welcome. We are a crazy bunch who discusses everything and anything that takes our fancy - but always returning to the home base of ospreys.

HeatherB: Is your computer still not showing the LG nest live webcam? I lost it yesterday and had the blank box with the small cross that you described, but, I got it back. Can you provide some details? You have Vista, but which browser are you using (IE, Firefox etc.) and which version? Also which version of Windows Media Player is installed on your machine? Any error message given when you access the website? If so please state.

I know why I lost my LG webcam, because I was networking two computers together and the settings on the desktop got transferred to the laptop, which is running a different configuration of software.

For anyone trying to run the website on Windows 7 with the latest Firefox 3.6.2, it just cannot work, since the WMP plug-in has not yet been made available, so although I have WMP version 12, it only works with IE version 8, which I have on the laptop, which is new. I have the nest on screen at present and there is nothing to report. 11.00AM.

The versions of software are given on the 'Help' button, under 'About xxxxx' usually.

I am not making any promises, but either I or one of the other members may be able to help.

JSB - See my mail of earlier today, I was being a wally, basically, not reading my screen correctly! Thank you for your post of yesterday - I had no internet connection for over 24 hours (Orange) and just got it back this morning, I did not go back far enough and missed your post. Anyway, all's well that ends well.

  • Maureen - I will leave it to more clever people than I to tell you how to get the live webcam, you will see from previous posts that I had problems. However, if you are seeing other cams, then you can probably access LG. Sorry I can't help any more, but at the bottom of the wee black page it says something about nestcam. I clicked on that, got a blank white page, and then noticed that there was a message at the top of my screen asking me to update windows media player. I hope someone clever will come to your aid.  x

  • Hi everyone.

I really enjoyed watching Marge eating a big fish at LOTL this evening.  Tried to take a screenshot but didn't manage.  Can't seem to be able to capture screenshot stills of live videos, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

margobird:  Your weather sounds like you're in the middle of a monsoon season.  Next you'll be getting ducks visiting your feeders.

Alan:  Glad you like the idea of a dedreichulater.  Had to laugh at the idea of all the ospreys forming an orderly queue in France.  Brilliant peregrine shot.

dibnlib:  Great to hear Pilgrim the bald eagle got back home safely.

Cirrus:  Thanks for posting the  clip from Bierregaard's latest email.  Hillarious description of baited breath.

Lindybird:  Glad everything turned out okay with the car and you don't have to fork out a lot for repairs.

    All the best everyone!

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Thanks for the welcome everyone.  Still dark here at the mo,  off to find something to read :) & be back to check on the nests when light.   Light sooner next week.

Yes I have the live videos, I watched   LG & LOTL both last year .  This forum wasn't here then?

  • Evening all:   Phew! Busy day. Spent a few hours on my knees pulling weeds in the miniature rose beds this morning.  I may trade rose beds this year - the guy in charge of volunteers asked me if I want to take on some of the David Austin roses - I've had the same hybrid whites for a couple of years now, so we'll see what happens. Then home for lunch and a visit from Bahama Bob, who services hot tubs (yes, we have one in the garden but we never use it and are thinking of selling it!); then to a demonstation garden downtown for a look at their drought-resistant plants; then off to the gym since I had dinner all ready to go and thought I may as well get even grottier before I had a shower. That'll give me all day tomorrow in our garden with the aphids and ants. Life is soooo thrilling.  So. No EJ yet.  But Marge seems to be settling in. She is snoozing on the nest as I type - poor old dear must be tired although they're saying she arrived in good condition and that this will be her 20th breeding year at LotL? Amazing.

Tish:   Are you using the http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/groups/lochgartenospreys/default.aspx link to reach the list of threads? You should be able to just click on "latest post" and get to it that way, then backtrack to previous pages for what you've missed.

Patriciat: Oh dear; sad tale about the male eagle. What little tragedies surround us that we don't even notice half the time.  :-(

Soosin.  Good to see you again.

Lindybird: You must be young to have grown up with electric typewriters. I'm not telling what I grew up with. So Alice in Wonderland has the thumbs up from Caeran and you.

Maureen: I had problems at the beginning of this season when they first set up the cam - I was clicking on my old LG link.   I still get a "no signal" message on a black screen when I got to the Loch Garden Osprey Nest link, which isn't live, but get the live cam when I choose Loch Garten Live Video  ( http://www.rspb.org.uk/webcams/birdsofprey/lochgartenvideo.asp ). You have to wait for second or three while it gets going and does the buffering bit.  I don't think you need to update Windows Media Player if you can access LotL cam.  Anyway, try this and see what happens.  These small glitches can be soooo frustrating.

AQ  Do sympathise with surfeit of summer - gets suffocating doesn't it?  I shall be whining about the heat in another six months.   I think ironing while watching telly constitutes moderate exercise. Watching the webcam and telly while ironing constitutes extreme activity and is possibly hazardous to our health.

Ginnie: FYI, once EJ (the female osprey and legal resident, so to speak, of the LG nest) returns, we'll start Daily Update threads where we'll all be twittering on about challengers for the nest, would-be mates (Odin is our preferred choice since he did such a stellar job last year), and, ultimately, eggs, chicks, and the all-important fish deliveries. We're going to keep the Weekly Chat pages going for other serious topics such as ironing, weekend excursions, pets, creme brulee, etc. :-)  There'll also be update blogs from the RSPB folks at LG, but that page is moderated and they update it, so it's not "instant." We're planning to reserve that page for direct questions, etc. for the RSPB staff.  You'll find that page to the right of the live webam under Blog (in blue).

Heron: I did a Print Screen (Alternate + Print Screen), then imported it into Photoshop where I edited (cropped) the image to show just the nest.  I think I messed up saving it as something other than a jpg because I couldn't insert it in the "Reply" box.  Also, it was a pretty grainy image.  I'm planning to try again. But Alan and others seem to get fabulous and clear shots and I wonder if they're from live cams..... Alan: Do you have any hints?

Off to do "to do" list for the morrow.....
