Weekly Chat, Sunday, March 21, 2010

Will EJ return this week?  What if another female tries to claim the nest?  Will super-Odin return to fish another year? Or will EJ take another mate (she'd better not!!)  Will YOU be the lucky blogger to catch the first glimpse of an osprey at LG?  Tune in to the Loch Garten LIVE webcam for the first installment of Loch Garten Ospreys - 2010!!

Seriously, lots of interesting chat on the last page or two of the previous week's chatter.  Catch up now because you won't have time once the ospreys are back in town!  :-)

Hi all, been out & about enjoying the signs of spring. Yesterday went to Weir Wood reservoir; inevitably the osprey which had been spotted there the day before, had moved on, but it was worth the trip to see herons on nest, and great crested grebes doing their courtship dance.

Today was down at RSPB Pulborough Brooks and managed to find this (not my video). Had never seen a Long Tailed Tit nest before - what a delicate construction:

Sue C thanks for the link to the video.  What a beautifully constructed nest.  Love the pattern of the ivy all round it.

  • Hi everyone.

It's been a really nice morning here, especially with the blackbirds giving the wake up call.  Beats an alarm clock any day if you ask me.  If truth be told its real osprey weather.  The LG osprey nest is having brilliant weather by the looks of things.  I get the feeling if the first osprey arrives when I'm watching live pictures, I might regress to an eight year old on Christmas morning, for a few moments.  Honestly can't wait.  :-)

Annette:  Hope the whales make their presence known for a bit longer when you're next watching them.  Hope the fog does a disappearing act.

AQ:  Should've mentioned what a great pic the Noisy Miner was in my last post.  They reach a slight bigger size that starlings and sound very similar in habits.  The Red Wattlebird looks fantastic.  Great pic.  Thanks for posting.

Caerann:  I get a slight feeling you like having short hair.  I'm kind of the opposite male equivalent, in that for the past three years people have been telling me: "get a haircut".  Well it keeps my ears free of cold in winter and my neck free from sunburn in summer.  Except when I've got to tie it back.  Chaffinches have a lovely characteristic and easily recognisable song.  Often written down in bird books as a brilliantly entertaining and sometimes hilarious piece of prose.  Usually something along the lines of: "chi-chip-chip, chirchirchiri cheeip-tcheweeoo".  Say this out loud in your most serious voice, and try not to laugh. :-)

Lindybird:  Hope the sun redoubles its efforts to make an appearance where you are.  Been having bother with my internet connection which is probably when I've been a bit quiet.  Hope your shopping trip goes well.

OG:  Only one word to describe that goldfinch picture: Completely and utterly stunning.  Okay, okay, I know that's four words but it is a lovely picture.  Thanks.

Diane:  Fantastic barn owl picture.  Thanks for posting.

Alan:  Thanks for the falcons update links.

Tiger:  Brilliant news about the Glaslyn female being back.  Thanks.

Margobird:  Sorry to hear you've got rotten weather.  Really hope it brightens up for you.  The sky is now looking a bit ominous here.  At least I can say the weather offers a daily variety in these parts.

A very happy Tuesday to everyone.  Have a great day.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Afternoon all,

Completed a shopping mission to Tesco this morning. Weather is sunny at the moment but not that warm as there is still a cold wind.

OG : Great picture of the goldfinches. I have only ever had one goldfinch in my garden.

Tiger : Great news about the Glaslyn pair especially as I have booked a week in Wales in May and have visited that site for the last 3 years.

Off to take Hamish for his afternoon walk while it is still sunny.

  • An osprey was sighted on The Loch of The Lowes Cam at 13.55

  • Thanks Tiger wonder if it is the male spotted the other day.  Perhaps it is Eric.

  • I missed the osprey at LOTL. I was in the garden.

New Forest Goshawk cam is up:

  • No I think it is Marge. It had Marge's stance.

  • Afternoon all I have been keeping up with all the chat and browsing the links although I haven't been posting. Sunday was SIL birthday and as I have more room in my house than she has gave her and her family a Sunday lunch party which went very well.  Been on shopping trip to asda this morning with SIL as her husband is no longer able to drive.

Going up to Forres this weekend and if the ospreys have returned to LG will get son to take me down to LG to see if I can see them even though the centre isn't open.

OG what type of camera did you use to take the goldfinch photo as they were superb.

Hope everyone is making sure they are in tip top condition ready for six months of joy, sadness, heart breaking moments and wonderful surprises that I am sure the ospreys will bring us.

  • I also think it is Marge Tiger.

Sadly the webcam crashed shortly after, so that tells us how many people were watching!

  • Good afternoon george g.  It is very hard to keep up with everything now, so many osprey sightings and male and female back at Glaslyn.  An osprey has been spotted again at Loch the Lowes but at the moment the cam is down, so frustrating.  If you get to LG at the weekend who knows you might just see EJ or Odin and wouldn't that be wonderful.

Yes I am ready for the season and all it brings whether it is heart breaking moments or we have another successful season with 3 chicks being reared.

    Enjoy your weekend.
