Weekly Chat (non-osprey), Sunday 19 Jan 2014

Simply amazing. Scientists in Tasmania are tracking bees with tiny sensors. The next stage is to shrink the sensor to track fruit fly & mosquitoes.

Temp may be cooler but the high humidity makes it feel just as unpleasant. The bushfires have destroyed at least 15 homes, 425,000 hectares, not to mention stock, crops & fencing. Concern that the first stage of the Tour DownUnder may have to be cancelled as the route is through one of the bushfire areas. Many of the fires, some still not under control, are in areas I have visited or plan to visit on photo excursions. News is much worse when one can picture the scene rather than just another anonymous place in the news. I haven't been out in the car since last Mon and driving to church this morn I felt quite strange.

  • Me too Lindybird :-)

Well Done Alan, don't let the fame go to your head LOL...

"The Hunting Act needs strengthening as many hunts are blatantly breaking the law. Hunt monitors are needed because many people involved in hunting think that they are above the law"

That's very obvious - it's the same kind of mind set which leads to the untimely demise of so many birds of prey.  They could strengthen the laws, but the same people breaking them now will continue to do so.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Have just watched "winter watch" and "winter watch unsprung", enjoyed them very much.  Enjoyed last night too, with "Call the Midwife" and "Mr. Selfridge" back again.

Came home today with a big bag of Seville oranges, it's marmalade making time again! It is one of the things that I really look forward to in January, I usually make enough to last for most of the year.        The daylight hours are definitely getting longer now and it is nice to look at the seed catalogues and plan this years gardening . We can also start to look forward to the ospreys returning!

  • Temps & humidity much better, expecting 29 max today. Stage 1 of Tour Downunder is going ahead, starting in the lovely Barossa Valley in an hour's time. CFS have worked hard to control the nearby bushfire & only hot spots (burning trees, etc) remain. Further north, 75% of Wirrabara's plantation pine forest has been lost.

The lorikeets (my avatar) have returned to a neighbour's tree. Perhaps peach, whatever, must still be green. It is lovely to hear them screeching & chattering to each other. As soon as they see me in my backyard, there is a frantic flyaway.

Confession time. The reason over the past few months why I have been vague, lurking, not posting regularly, dashing in & out . . . Well Diane was right. I have been abducted by aliens. Dau2 has needed help with chores and a very active LittleMiss. Yep, Dau is pregnant and has been suffering "afternoon" sickness. She is feeling better now but very tired. Also I'm needed to mind LM when there are all the medical visits & scans & physio, etc. Oh and the aliens? She's expecting twins.

  • Lot of aliens in Oz, AQ.  That big rocky thing sticking out of the ground didn't get there by accident. And they say Harold Holt drowned, but i'm not so sure...

    The truth is out there...

  • Hi, all.

AQ: Congratulations!!! I thought perhaps something was going on there. :-))) Seriously, best wishes to your daughter and the entire family. She will have her hands full with twins and Little Miss. Take care and get plenty of rest yourself!!! Glad your weather is being a bit kinder; I hope you stay safe from the fires. Those lorikeets are such beautiful birds.

Mulberry: Those ETs are everywhere. :-)

Rita: Homemade marmalade. Yum!!! That's a lovely way to spend some winter days! I have diaries that my paternal grandmother wrote when my Dad and his brothers were young. She mostly just talks about the weather, the garden crops, and visitors they had, but I still like to read them because it makes me feel close to her. So I say save all your writings. :-)

Alan: Well said! Can I have your autograph?! Enjoy your well-deserved new celebrity status! :-)

George: Margo's right; Diesel needs some Wellies! Seriously, my boxer dog had little boots that he wore outdoors in the extreme cold, so his paw pads wouldn't get frost bitten. :-) He wore a scarf around his neck, too! Maybe Diesel needs boots? :-)

George/OG: I've seen the big oil rigs off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. They are massive!

Margo: Glad you and Billie are getting a bit of sunshine. Spring is coming. We're almost halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox! I just saw a photo of the Romsey area of the New Forest (on Facebook); it was incredibly flooded!

Lindy: I love those Highland coos so much. I laughed at the Monday smiles. I'm glad that your youngest wasn't run over on the M5; what a dangerous situation! I'm so pleased that you like your newly redecorated room.

MaryGK: I cannot believe that you have daffodils coming up. I have 6 inches of new snow on the ground.

Clare: I loved your recent photos. Adorable gull! Did you see this video of the crows on the osprey nest at Cors Dyfi? One was giving the other medical attention. Fascinating.

Brenda: I hope your bowls game went well.

Heather: I hope everything gets sorted with your online payments. What a shame. Technology can be a curse or a blessing... I enjoyed your stories at the end of last week's thread. :-)

Annette: So glad your stomach is better. I read a good explanation of your drought/weather situation today. Sure wish I could send you some snow melt. I'm sorry you have to start water rationing and other measures. :-( Glad that Possum II showed up for a meal and a drink. I'm also glad the whale watch will be starting. I know how much you enjoy that. Wish I could help watch for them.

Lindy/Annette/Brenda: We aren't allowed to smile for our driver's license photos anymore, which just increases the likelihood that one will look like a character from a Stephen King novel. Oh, and that old woman stood in front of me last time, too. Who is that...?

  • Very busy day today; off out early tomorrow. Take care all.

I did see that - Mary was kind enough to post a link to it on the Dyfi thread.  I thought it was so beautiful to watch - I've seen crows mutually preening once before but to see it in such detail was great.

By the way, good morning all!

  • Good morning all! Sorry I haven't posted lately been reading/lurking though ;) No sunshine here at the mo but it we have had the most beautiful winter days here. Daytime temps around -15C and sunny, trees covered with frost and snow, glistening in sunlight - so beautiful! Spring is definitely coming - sun rose above the horizon in the northern Finland for the first time few days ago :)

Great Monday smiles, Linda. Oh AQ, double congrats! Nice pics, Clare. Thanks for all posts everyone! Have a nice day all!

  • Good Morning, All. Sun is making a pretty red & rose coloured strip of gold on the horizon, here. Many congrats to AQ and Daughter #2!! Lots of excitement ahead!
