First observation of the year for our département but it could be an over-wintering Osprey as they've been in this area before in the winter.

Hi All
Yesterday afternoon i observed an osprey from a distance of approx. 5 metres whilst driving from dunsfold, surrey, to alfold (near sharp corner in the road by three compasses pub).
the bird was eating a rabbit carcass by the road edge, flew up to an overhead tree, remained there for about a minute then flew off. needless to say i had an excellent view of the bird for some considerable length of time & i am absolutely convinced it was an osprey. of course it begs the question of what it is doing in the country in january.
i understand my sighting cannot be confirmed, but i hope someone else will spot the bird in the near future.
Kind Regards
Stuart Dawson

Well it would be a very remarkable sighting indeed if it were to be eating a rabbit. Ospreys normally only eat fish.

Could it have been a pale buzzard like this?
or this?
Thanks Hazel. That could be the same osprey sighted on 16th further south at Ile aux Oiseaux-Cabanes Tchanquées / Teste-de-Buch

Another for saturday, it's possible that they are now coming back, but it seems very early to me.
