Continued from Osprey Chat Thread September 2013
At the beginning of September I said that the osprey season should have been all over but it wasn't. Well it is now. Yes the two very late osprey chicks at Dyfi viz. Clarach and Cerist finally migrated on 18th and 20th September respectively. They were incredibly well fed chicks and are now presumably well on their way to Africa. Hopefully they will return to Britain in 2015 but since they are not tracked it will be a very long and anxious wait.
Meanwhile the latest European trans location project to Basque country began to report in earnest. Five of the birds are tracked and four of them are slogging their way through the Sahara as I write. For details see here
The 2013 osprey has been the most exciting for me ever and I have now seen 15 osprey seasons. Maybe it is because more and more people are taking an interest and doing their own little pieces. Surely this can only bee good for ospreys and their well being. So all that remains is for us to follow the tracked birds to their destinations and then begin the long wait until it all begins again in March 2014.
Let us hope we all be ready for an exciting 2014

Yes I did thank you Cirrus. Quiet and simple, just as I like it.
I was watching the news earlier and apparently the Boxing Day sales have been drawing huge crowds despite the recession. Queueing up all night then battling through crowds for a bargain is not my cup of tea I'm afraid but so many people do it year after year.
ChloeB & Tiger's Osprey Data
What a beautiful photo of your friendly robin, Chloe. And a belated happy Christmas, and all good wishes to everyone for 2014. It won't be long before we hear the wing beat of osprey heading north once more.

Hi, all. I hope all those who celebrate had a wonderful holiday and that everyone is safe from the dangerous weather! I hesitated to post this story because it's depressing (given that this is the holidays), but I decided I'd go ahead so that you all can be on the lookout in case any of your U.K. raptors or shore birds (especially grebes) start to show unusual symptoms. Article HERE. Again, sorry for the negativity.
Diane, Thank you for flagging up this sad situation with the Bald Eagles in Utah. I hope that the vets dealing with this can resolve the problem and hopefully do something to prevent its spread, whether it be a contagious disease or yet another man-made problem.
Thanks Diane for highlighting this problem. I do hope there is a successful outcome to the investigations into this serious problem and therefore a cure.
Makes for very sad reading Diane, I do hope that they can find out what is causing all these deaths.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
The clocks are ticking away, and it won't be long until the new Osprey Season. I think that 2013 was a very successful year,(apart from the non-return of dear Nora) with lots of discoveries of birds who have returned and been sighted, even some 4 chick nests here in Scotland, and many exciting moments throughout the season, especially the photos of Caledonia in her wintering grounds, we can never forget how thrilling it was to see her out in Sevilla, what will she do this Spring, we will have to wait and see.
The closer we are to the start of the season the excitement builds, as more and more help is given to the Ospreys by building nesting platforms and artificial nests, one of which I found out through RSPB is in Stirlingshire just a few miles from me, it will be interesting to see if any Ospreys take up residence. The more help they get hopefully they will flourish and spread through the UK!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
On a more cheerful note I sincerely hope they get permission to put up nesting poles at Abberton Reservoir in the next few months - that would be brilliant!
