Weekly Chat, Sunday, March 14

Hi all: Lots of news about ospreys and other stuff plus photos (if you're lucky!)  on the previous pages.

  • Morning all: Another warmish day today with jet trails streaking across the sky, one after another, on their way north - the morning batch of departures from LAX.   I see Trucker dude's route is going through Fargo, North Dakota, where they're apparently anticipating problems with the levees when the river reaches flood stage on Saturday.  Will be interesting to see how he fares.  I have to get my hair tidied up soon, though I like to tie it back during the summer. The girl who does is seems not to have much of a sense of humor, but she's just around the corner and does a reasonable-enough job.

Diane: Finnish eh?  Maybe you're related to Auntie!  :-)    I have to say I love talking - and listening - to people. On that cross-country train ride where I saw the full moon over the Plains, spent ages with a very genteel older lady who grew up outside Wichita, Kansas. When she and her OH decided they wanted to move closer to town, they just picked up and took everything, including their house, which was hauled into town by a huge truck. People have such interesting stories.

Auntie: Our reading group's next book is The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. Have you read it?  Hope the sun continues to shine there.   David Beckham was with an L.A. team and fans were sorely disappointed in his frequent absences from the games; I suspect they thought he wasn't worth the money they paid him.

OG: I can only stand social events where I know the people well. Just hopeless at small talk and hate having to shout to be heard or strain to hear what someone is saying over the babble.

Tiger:  Brilliant news re Loch of the Lowes cam. Thanks.  It took a second or two for me to realize that the snowbird wasn't real; thought I was just clueless of yet another specie.  Thanks for the Pale Male link - no "spring red-tailed hawk"?  Had to smile at that.

Alan: You are becoming a clearing house for All Things Birding - Migration Department). Thank you. Primose pix is here, but not the first one. Looks like Spring has sprung.  White Puffin is amazing.

Cirrus: Good to see you, no matter what color you blog in (personally, I like that shade of blue)  :-)  Sun is indeed shining here. I'm worried that we've seen the last of the rain this season.

BrendaH: I think the books are just an excuse for a natter and a plateful of treats.

Margobird: Hadn't heard about champagne being a remedy for upset stomach - but it only makes sense, right?  And so much more fun than Alka Seltzer or Mylanta.

dibnlib: Oh dear, how sad for your friend. The flowers sound like a really nice gesture.

Terry: 6,600 last night for Phoebe? Amazing. Wonder where all those people are.  Just shows how nature can pull us all together - (except when wind turbines are involved - horrible story - but thanks for the link).  We have hundreds of wind turbines here - in the pass between Los Angeles and Palm Springs (one of the major links to the East) and in the Tejon Pass, between LA and the north. Very windy areas; have not heard of an unusual number of bird deaths, but then our network news folks only deal in political sound bites and creating crises where none exist.

Hallo to everyone else who posted. Take care all. Off to start the day.

  • TerryM,  I would also like to add that if the wind is too strong, they have to be switched off. I also agree whole heartedly with Alan's quotation from the article. No doubt for the government, it makes our green energy figures look better.

  • Forget Beckham, the big news here is that Tiger Woods is returning to golf, so our evening network news will be full of that and a replay of his personal problems.  Wonderful - not.

  • Thanks for the anti wind farm comments, I expect there are some of you on the other side, too. We have four lots in view from here, you can see them all from the Lake District peaks, and planners say they won't be visible??  My OH resigned his RSPB membership over their pro stance, but I look at the other things they do that are good. Perhaps you antis should lobby.  Maybe I should start a thread, but I don't really like arguing or being shouted at. Wimp.

Diane, thanks for that truck cam tip. And I dot think you are grouch, you are definitely Finnish LOL. We just love our privacy here and are often described sulky etc by foreigners

Auntie/Annette: I'd be very proud to be related to Auntie. :-) Actually, I watched a documentary on Finland not long ago -- the culture, the lifestyles, the landscape, and the way the Finnish people relate to the land. I remember thinking that I would feel comfortable there!!! I much prefer the cold to the heat, too. :-)

  • DIBNLIB - So sorry to hear about your friend's dog -

Everyone else - so many now! I have enjoyed catching up with all the chat and just want to say that my grandson has emailed his Dad. Dad will be able to pick it up when it is his 'time' to use the communal computer, which is secure.

  • PS - I do get very carried away on this site. I just went downstairs and found kitchen full of steam, hob a mess and the potatoes which were meant to be par boiling prior to roasting were almost mashed. Ah well, healthier, I suppose--

  • There is a Goodbye blog from Douglas.

HeatherB, lovely to hear that your Grandson has written to his Dad. Your son-in-law will be overjoyed to receive it. Sorry about  your dinner though.

  • HEATHER B By the time I have added lots of butter and cream to my mashed potatoes they are definitely not healthy      but definitely delicious!!!!!!

Enjoyed lunch at Rocpool Restaurant yesterday. Our fav eating place.

Not a good week for dog lovers here. OH was stopped by a near neighbour on his way home from work with the news that Angus their 9 year old English Setter was put to sleep on Fri. I knew he had Leukemia but didn't realise the end would be so soon. Poor Cath, her OH also has Leukemia and is going through extensive chemo at the mo.

My friend tells me that Chelsea her older Boxer sat by Phoebe all night after she was put to sleep and didn't move until they took Phoebe to the crematorium to say their final goodbyes.

Will be more cheery next time we talk. Very much lookin forward to Wild Scotland tonight. Tomorrow off to the fitness club for a swim in the am and first aid trng in the pm. Now off to cook the evening meal. Haddock new pots and peas
