Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey) Sunday 11 August 2013

Happy New Week!

Last week's Weekly Chat thread is HERE.

The code for this week's Weekly Chat thread is WC110813 (in case you ever need to find it using the search box).

(WC stands for Weekly Chat. 11 is the day, 08 is the month, and 13 is the year. I will always follow this format.)

Don't forget to watch for the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight and tomorrow night. If you have cloudy skies, you can watch the online webcasts. See my post at the end of last week's chat thread.

Sending good energy to Margo, Patricia, NiteOwl, Buzz, and anyone else who is dealing with adversity.

I haven't seen Lynette posting for a while. Lynette, I hope you have recovered well from your operation!!!

Also, sending a shout out to Auntie in Finland, who's probably working very hard at her career, and to DJoanS -- also to Caerann in Chicago (I thought of her this week).

  • Thanks Diane for starting us off and for trying to find the lost and strayed.

Another fine sunny day, so after lunch I'll be taking my camera for another airing. My first attempt a few days ago resulted in deep blue pics. I must have pressed something - don't know what I did but it took OH many sweary words to restore it to normal. Rain expected for the rest of the week and I have another day bus trip next Sunday, hence the rush to become familiar with new camera.

Latest nonsense. Bosses are urged to soften their strine and avoid traditional slang to make workplaces more migrant friendly. Guide has been prepared by the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Aust. Despite the word "ethnic" in their title, they say "ethnic" is negative & potentially discriminatory. They recommend the term CALD or culturally & linguistically diverse. A rose by another name, methinks? Some AussieSpeak that may be understood are "Bring a plate", "This machine is cactus", "He really spat the dummy that time", "Flat out" [I've heard 'flat out like a lizard drinking'], sickie, bludger, offsider, stoked, stuffed. If you need a translation of these or want more, let me know.

  • Evening all:

Diane: I'm beginning to feel guilty - haven't started a new Weekly Chat in eons.  I'd love to see the Perseid shower, but we have quite a few lights around here and I'm not sure I can stay up that late; would be nice to have someone to drive up Highway 154 with and hang out; it's definitely not OH's thing. :-(

George/OG: Have a great visit; hope the weather stays good for you.

Lindybird: The Mona Lisa puzzle is 80% done; the only problem is that the remaining pieces are all black/very dark brown!  I'm reduced to matching odd-shaped pieces, but it's still not as hard as Van Gogh's Irises, which was almost entirely blue/green that made up most of the image. Still, it keeps me out of the bars (pubs).  :-)    My favorite garden in that batch was the mostly gray one (the second shot).  The recycled horse a definite improvement on the biker!

Alan: Ah, good to hear Lady P is doing well;  she had a problem with meds the last I heard, or at least remember.  Hope that's sorted out.   I love street buskers (and songs from the 60s - and the 40s, 50s, 70s....)

AQ: So the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Council of Australia will rename itself the Federation of Culturally and Linguistically Diverser Communities' Councils of Australia? It was a mouthful to start off with!  Political correctness run amuck!  Good luck with the camera. OK, so, a machine is a cactus and that means what? And "bring a plate" sounds too obvious to be what it sounds like.

Got masses of garden work done this week - lots of summer blooming stuff that needed deadheading (shearing in some cases); feeding, etc., but I made time for an hour in the hammock to read/nap.  Hope everyone has a good Sunday.  I'm going to pop outside and see if any Perseids are about!

  • Morning everybody

Does anybody else suffer the misery of having the same tune going round and round in your head 24/7, minute after minute.  I've been suffering this for over a month now with one tune in particular. I've tried everything, including OD'ing on the tune after buying the CD last week. It's no use. So after suffering it again all night at work, I've decided that the only course of action is to inflict it on everybody else.

(If anything, it's a jolly little tune to start off the week!)

  • Coldplay?  Mulberry, you poor thing!

At the moment I find I have various songs by Iron Maiden running through my head but as I saw them live last week that's not surprising - and I can easily live with the situation.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • LOL Clare, not surprised you're still hearing Iron Maiden, your eardrums are probably still wobbling...

  • My ears have, in fact, stopped ringing.  Took them a while, though.  I had a Floor Standing ticket - heaven only knows how I managed that as the whole gig sold out in twelve minutes!

"cactus" = broken. Thus the machine doesn't work any more.

"Bring a plate" - on notices for suppers & similar occasions where food is shared. Of course you are meant to fill the plate with sandwiches or mini quiche or cakes or some sort of food. Needless to say, many new to this country have been known to take an empty plate. In ye olden days it may have been "Basket supper". Basket needing to be filled  . . .

Photo excursion successful. I am still on my L's, not progressed to my P camera licence yet. LOL However I am stuffed, ie tired, after driving & navigating myself on strange roads. It was too nice a day spend weeding!!!

  • Aquilareen, what do you mean by 'strine'?

  • G'day, Folks!!   (My Australian is patchy,  LOL!!)

Day started out damp but its clearing up a bit now.  Thanks to Diane for starting us off again and for all the posts so far - a bit busier than yesterday!

mulberry:   I love Coldplay and agree with one of the comments underneath the video that its one of their best, if not their best tune.  But I agree that its so annoying to have a tune which will not leave your brain all day (did you know they are called "earworms" ?, which is a great description).  Mine lately has been every time they play that dratted song on the radio about being "Big When I Was Little" - its driving me crazy!!

Diane:  they mentioned that we should look to the skies again now, on our News bulletin. I always seem to forget, and miss it, or else its too cloudy :-((

  • AQ:  Glad you're enjoying the new camera.  Love the fact that they are getting even more tied up with words to describe words....   "Where will it all end  ;-)"

Clare:  Don't think you'll forget your concert for a good long time.  Bet those tunes are ringing in your ears for ages!!
